CHAPTER 8 The Woman in the Vault

Nathan's voice echoed through the underground chamber.

"Mom...?"

The elderly woman in the wheelchair slowly raised her head.

Her silver hair framed a thin, pale face marked by time, but her blue eyes were unmistakable.

The same eyes that had smiled from every family photograph.

The same eyes that had appeared in the recordings moments earlier.

Grace covered her mouth.

Richard staggered backward.

For the first time in decades, genuine terror spread across his face.

"No..."

The woman looked directly at him.

"Hello, Richard."

Her voice was weaker than it had been in the recordings.

But it was undeniably real.

Lily whispered,

"Grandma?"

The woman smiled through tears.

"So..."

"...this is my granddaughter."

Nathan stood frozen.

His entire body refused to move.

He had buried his mother.

He had stood beside her grave.

He had watched mourners lower a casket into the ground.

He had cried for years.

Now she was sitting only twenty feet away.

Alive.

He finally forced himself forward.

His knees almost gave out.

"Mom..."

Elizabeth reached out a trembling hand.

Nathan fell to his knees beside her wheelchair and took it carefully.

It was warm.

Not a dream.

Not a recording.

Not an illusion.

Warm.

Nathan began to cry.

"I thought..."

Elizabeth gently touched his face.

"I know."

"You died."

"They wanted you to believe that."

Nathan looked at Richard.

"You buried an empty coffin?"

Richard remained silent.

Elizabeth answered instead.

"No."

Nathan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

She closed her eyes briefly.

"There was a body."

His blood ran cold.

"Whose?"

Elizabeth whispered,

"My twin sister's."

The room fell silent.

Grace stared in disbelief.

Nathan had never even known his mother had a twin.

Elizabeth nodded sadly.

"Emily."

"My younger sister."

"She died protecting me."

Nathan's heart broke all over again.

Richard finally found his voice.

"This changes nothing."

Elizabeth looked at him calmly.

"It changes everything."

"You should have stayed hidden."

"I tried."

"You failed."

Elizabeth smiled faintly.

"No."

She glanced toward Lily.

"I succeeded."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

"I lived long enough..."

She squeezed Nathan's hand.

"...to meet my granddaughter."

The guards shifted uneasily.

One whispered to another,

"She was alive this whole time?"

The other shook his head.

"I don't know what's real anymore."

Martin Ellis entered the archive, still rubbing his wrists where the handcuffs had been.

He stopped dead.

His eyes widened.

"Mrs. Cole..."

Elizabeth looked at him.

"You've gotten older, Martin."

His voice trembled.

"I thought..."

"You attended my funeral."

Martin slowly nodded.

Elizabeth smiled sadly.

"So did I."

Nathan helped his mother sit more comfortably.

"I don't understand."

Elizabeth took a slow breath.

"After I discovered Richard's crimes..."

She looked toward her husband.

"...he arranged a car accident."

Richard interrupted.

"I arranged protection."

Elizabeth ignored him.

"My sister switched places with me that night."

Nathan frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Richard's men were watching."

Emily had driven Elizabeth's car.

Elizabeth had escaped through a service tunnel behind the hospital.

Hours later...

The vehicle exploded.

Authorities identified the body using personal belongings.

No DNA testing had been performed.

Richard had ensured the investigation ended quickly.

Nathan whispered,

"He let everyone believe you were dead."

Elizabeth nodded.

"He told the world he had lost his wife."

She looked directly at Richard.

"In truth..."

"...he had imprisoned her."

Grace felt a chill.

"You've been here?"

Elizabeth slowly nodded.

"For ten years."

Nathan stared around the vault.

"This place?"

Richard answered coldly.

"It was secure."

Nathan rounded on him.

"You locked Mom underground for a decade?"

Richard didn't flinch.

"I kept her alive."

"You kept her captive!"

"I kept her breathing."

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

"The difference matters."

Lily quietly walked over to the wheelchair.

She looked up shyly.

"Hi."

Elizabeth smiled.

"Hello, sweetheart."

Lily held out the black diary.

"Everyone keeps fighting over this."

Elizabeth chuckled softly.

"I know."

"You can have it."

Elizabeth gently pushed the diary back toward Lily.

"No."

"It belongs to you now."

Lily blinked.

"I can't read big words."

Nathan almost laughed through his tears.

Neither could he.

Richard suddenly raised his pistol again.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

His expression had changed.

The fear was gone.

Only cold determination remained.

"This reunion ends now."

Nathan immediately stepped in front of Elizabeth.

"You'll have to shoot me."

Richard answered without hesitation.

"If necessary."

Grace moved beside Nathan, shielding Lily.

Martin quietly stepped forward too.

Then...

One by one...

The security guards lowered their weapons.

Richard frowned.

"What are you doing?"

No one answered.

The oldest guard finally removed the Cole family security badge from his uniform.

It hit the floor with a metallic clink.

"I didn't sign up to point guns at children."

A second guard removed his badge.

Then a third.

Within seconds, every armed guard had lowered their weapons.

Richard looked around in disbelief.

"You work for me."

The oldest guard answered quietly,

"We worked for the company."

He glanced at Lily.

"Not for this."

Richard realized something he had never imagined possible.

For the first time in his life...

He was alone.

His face hardened.

"So be it."

Before anyone could react...

Richard reached into his jacket with his free hand and pressed a hidden button.

A deep mechanical rumble echoed beneath the floor.

Elizabeth's smile disappeared.

"No..."

Nathan looked at her.

"What is it?"

She whispered only two words.

"Self-destruct."

Grace frowned.

"What?"

Elizabeth looked toward the ceiling.

"I designed this archive."

Nathan's heart sank.

"It destroys itself if Richard loses control."

Martin's face turned white.

"That's impossible."

Elizabeth shook her head.

"I built it."

Red emergency lights flashed throughout the vault.

A computerized voice announced:

Archive destruction sequence initiated.

Ten minutes until total structural collapse.

Shelves of journals began retracting into armored compartments.

Massive steel doors started closing around the chamber.

Nathan looked at his mother.

"Can we stop it?"

Elizabeth whispered,

"Only one person knows the override."

Nathan already knew the answer.

He slowly turned toward his father.

Richard Cole smiled for the first time since entering the vault.

"You finally understand."

He lifted the pistol slightly.

"If you want to save your mother..."

He looked at Lily.

"...or your daughter..."

May you like

"...you'll have to choose."
