CHAPTER 2 The Custody Order

The pounding on the front door grew louder.

"Mr. Cole!"

The attorney's voice carried through the mansion like a judge announcing a sentence.

"We have a court order. Open the door immediately."

Nathan didn't move.

His gaze shifted from the front entrance to the little girl hiding behind Grace.

Lily had buried her face against her mother's shoulder, trembling so violently that even her tiny fingers shook.

She didn't understand words like custody.

But she understood fear.

Grace did.

Too well.

She had seen those men before.

Five years ago.

Different suits.

Different faces.

Same family.

Same purpose.

Take the child.

Destroy the mother.

Nathan slowly turned back toward Grace.

"What is happening?"

She swallowed.

"I don't have time to explain everything."

"You'd better start."

Another bang rattled the oak door.

Victoria suddenly found her voice.

"Nathan, just let them in. If Grace has nothing to hide, she shouldn't be afraid."

Grace laughed bitterly.

"Nothing to hide?"

She stared directly at Victoria.

"Tell him who filed the custody petition."

Victoria's lips tightened.

Nathan noticed.

For the first time in years, he realized something unsettling.

Victoria wasn't surprised.

She looked... prepared.

As though she had expected those officers to arrive at this exact moment.

"Nathan," she said softly, stepping closer. "Please don't let this woman manipulate you."

"This woman?"

Nathan's voice turned icy.

"You just beat her with a hockey stick."

Victoria forced tears into her eyes.

"I panicked."

"You attacked an unarmed mother."

"I thought she was kidnapping a child."

Nathan looked at Lily.

The little girl instinctively reached for Grace.

Not Victoria.

Not anyone else.

Children never lied with fear.

He crouched carefully in front of Lily.

"Hey."

She peeked up at him.

Her cheeks were wet with tears.

His heart clenched.

She looked so much like the photographs of him at that age.

The same dark hair.

The same curious blue eyes.

Even the tiny scar above her eyebrow...

Nathan blinked.

His own childhood scar rested in exactly the same place.

A family trait.

Impossible to fake.

He spoke gently.

"What's your name?"

"Lily."

"Full name?"

She hesitated.

Grace nodded encouragingly.

"Lily Carter."

Nathan smiled sadly.

"How old are you?"

"I'm four."

"When's your birthday?"

"September eighteenth."

Nathan's smile disappeared.

His own birthday was exactly nine months before.

Grace watched realization spread across his face.

He didn't need a DNA test to believe anymore.

The dates alone were enough.

The pounding resumed.

Even harder.

"Mr. Cole!"

The attorney sounded impatient now.

"If you obstruct a lawful order, you'll be held responsible."

Nathan stood.

He walked toward the front door.

Victoria followed.

Relief washed over her face.

Finally.

Everything was back under control.

Nathan opened the door halfway.

Three people waited outside.

Martin Ellis.

Chief legal counsel for Cole Industries.

Two uniformed police officers.

Martin smiled politely.

"Good evening, Mr. Cole."

Nathan didn't return the smile.

"What is this?"

Martin held out a folder.

"Emergency custody authorization."

Nathan didn't take it.

"For whom?"

Martin answered without hesitation.

"Lily Carter."

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

"Who requested it?"

Martin paused.

Then smiled again.

"The petition was filed by your father."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"On what grounds?"

Martin opened the folder.

"The child's mother has been deemed mentally unstable."

Grace froze.

Martin continued reading.

"Evidence indicates repeated attempts to flee the country, child neglect, unstable employment, multiple false identities, and possible involvement in financial fraud."

Nathan looked over his shoulder.

Grace's face had turned completely pale.

"That's ridiculous," he said.

Martin shrugged.

"The judge disagreed."

Nathan held out his hand.

"Let me see."

Martin reluctantly passed him the documents.

Nathan flipped through the pages.

Psychological evaluation.

Bank records.

Travel history.

Witness statements.

Everything looked official.

Too official.

Then he stopped.

Page seven.

A photograph.

Grace screaming.

Holding Lily tightly.

Eyes wide with panic.

Nathan frowned.

"When was this taken?"

Grace looked.

Her blood ran cold.

"The airport..."

Nathan examined the timestamp.

"Yesterday morning."

Grace shook her head violently.

"I've never been to the airport."

Nathan looked closer.

Something felt wrong.

The woman in the picture wore Grace's coat.

Grace's hairstyle.

Grace's backpack.

But...

The child wasn't Lily.

The little girl's shoes were different.

Nathan's business instincts took over.

Someone had built an entire legal case.

Fast.

Expensive.

Professional.

Martin cleared his throat.

"Mr. Cole, we'll need the child."

Nathan slowly closed the folder.

"No."

The attorney blinked.

"I'm sorry?"

"I said no."

Martin lowered his voice.

"Your father personally authorized this."

Nathan stepped outside and closed the door behind him.

"So my father somehow discovered a daughter he supposedly never knew existed..."

Martin remained silent.

"...filed emergency custody paperwork..."

Silence.

"...assembled evidence overnight..."

Still silence.

"...and arrived less than an hour after I came home."

Nathan smiled without humor.

"Interesting timing."

Martin adjusted his glasses.

"Mr. Cole, your father is only concerned about the child's welfare."

Nathan took one step closer.

"Then tell him to come himself."

Inside the house, Grace whispered urgently.

"We have to leave."

Victoria blocked the hallway.

"No one is going anywhere."

Grace looked at her.

"You knew."

Victoria smiled.

"I know everything."

Grace's stomach tightened.

Victoria leaned closer.

"You should've stayed hidden."

"You'll never get Lily."

Victoria laughed.

"You still don't understand."

Grace frowned.

"This was never about Lily."

"What?"

"It was always about Nathan."

Grace felt the room spin.

Victoria whispered.

"If Nathan has a legal heir..."

She glanced toward the front door.

"...my marriage ends."

Everything clicked.

Nathan's father.

The engagement.

The inheritance.

The billion-dollar company.

The prenuptial agreement.

Nathan had once mentioned something years ago.

His grandfather's will.

Grace suddenly remembered his exact words.

"The first legitimate grandchild inherits the controlling shares."

Her eyes widened.

Lily.

Victoria wasn't trying to eliminate a child.

She was trying to eliminate the rightful heir to the Cole fortune.

Outside, Nathan folded the custody papers.

"They're fake."

Martin raised an eyebrow.

"I beg your pardon?"

Nathan pointed at page seven.

"The metadata is wrong."

Martin remained expressionless.

"The photograph claims it was taken yesterday."

"So?"

"I was at that airport yesterday."

Martin blinked.

Nathan smiled.

"I remember every security camera angle."

He tapped the image.

"Terminal Three has been under renovation for three weeks."

Silence.

"This photo couldn't have been taken yesterday."

Martin's face stiffened.

Nathan continued.

"And whoever forged it..."

"...made one mistake."

He pulled out his phone.

Opened the airport's live renovation schedule.

Then held the screen in front of Martin.

"The construction barriers behind Grace were removed two months ago."

Martin said nothing.

Nathan took another step.

"You forged evidence."

One officer looked uncertain.

The other shifted awkwardly.

Martin slowly reached into his pocket.

Nathan expected another document.

Instead...

Martin pressed a small button hidden inside his jacket.

Nathan heard a faint click.

Then another.

Inside the mansion...

Every electronic lock engaged simultaneously.

Steel security shutters slammed down over every window.

Grace spun toward the front entrance.

Locked.

The back door.

Locked.

Even the emergency exits sealed shut.

Victoria smiled.

"You really think this house belongs to Nathan?"

Grace stared.

Victoria walked toward Lily.

"It belongs..."

"...to his father."

The lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the mansion.

Then a calm male voice echoed from hidden speakers throughout the house.

"Good evening, Nathan."

Nathan's blood froze.

He knew that voice.

His father.

"I see you've finally met your daughter."

A brief pause.

May you like

"Now hand her over."
