CHAPTER 4 The House of Traps

The steel door hit the marble floor with a thunderous boom.

Nathan slammed both palms against it.

"Grace!"

His voice echoed through the sealed corridor.

On the other side, Grace dropped to her knees, wrapping Lily in her arms as another tremor shook the mansion.

"Nathan!" she screamed.

Only silence answered.

The barrier between them was nearly six inches thick, reinforced with industrial steel. It hadn't been installed to stop burglars.

It had been built to imprison.

Lily buried her face against Grace's chest.

"Mommy... where's Daddy?"

Grace's heart twisted.

For five years she had imagined this moment, wondering what Nathan would say if he ever learned the truth.

She had dreamed of tears.

Of forgiveness.

Of joy.

Never of steel walls, blood, and a man trying to steal their daughter.

She kissed Lily's forehead.

"He'll find us."

She prayed she wasn't lying.

On the other side of the barrier, Nathan forced himself to stop hitting the door.

Anger wouldn't open it.

Thinking might.

His eyes swept across the hallway.

The mansion suddenly looked different.

The elegant artwork wasn't decoration.

The ventilation grilles were larger than necessary.

Tiny cameras watched every corner.

His father hadn't built a home.

He had built a fortress.

And every fortress had a control room.

Nathan whispered to himself,

"If there's a control system... there's a weakness."

He turned and sprinted toward the staircase.

Behind him, Victoria called out.

"Nathan, wait!"

He ignored her.

She grabbed his arm.

"Listen to me!"

Nathan spun around.

His eyes burned with fury.

"You knew."

Victoria's grip loosened.

"I..."

"You knew my father planned everything."

"I didn't know about Lily!"

"But you knew he controlled my life!"

Victoria couldn't answer.

Nathan stared at the engagement ring sparkling on her finger.

Just an hour ago, he had planned to marry her.

Now the diamond looked like a pair of handcuffs.

He reached for her hand.

Victoria's eyes widened.

"Nathan..."

He slid the ring off her finger.

"I don't even know who you are."

The ring landed on the marble floor with a sharp metallic click.

Victoria watched it roll away.

Three years of lies ended in three seconds.

In another part of the mansion, Richard Cole sat inside a private security room.

Twenty-four monitors covered one wall.

Every camera feed appeared before him.

Nathan running upstairs.

Grace carrying Lily.

Victoria crying.

Martin waiting outside.

Richard calmly sipped a glass of Scotch.

A security chief stood nearby.

"Sir..."

Richard didn't look away from the screens.

"Yes?"

"The separation worked."

"And my son?"

"He's heading toward the east wing."

Richard smiled faintly.

"Exactly where I wanted him."

The guard hesitated.

"What if he reaches the control room?"

Richard finally looked at him.

"He won't."

"Why not?"

"Because the control room isn't his destination."

Richard pressed a button.

One monitor switched to a blueprint of the mansion.

A blinking red dot moved through the corridors.

Nathan.

Another blinking dot remained stationary.

Grace.

A third appeared somewhere underground.

The guard frowned.

"What's beneath the house?"

Richard smiled.

"My insurance policy."

Grace hurried through an unfamiliar hallway.

Emergency lights flashed overhead.

Every few seconds the building groaned as hidden mechanisms shifted inside the walls.

This place felt alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

She noticed something strange.

Every hallway curved slightly.

Nothing lined up naturally.

It was a maze.

Then she heard footsteps.

Fast.

Heavy.

Coming toward her.

Grace froze.

Lily clung tighter.

The footsteps stopped around the corner.

A man's voice called out.

"Grace?"

She recognized it instantly.

Martin Ellis.

Richard's attorney.

Grace backed away.

"Don't come any closer."

Martin rounded the corner slowly, holding both hands where she could see them.

"I don't want to hurt you."

Grace laughed bitterly.

"You helped ruin my life."

Martin didn't argue.

"You need to leave."

She stared at him.

"What?"

"Richard changed the plan."

Grace's heart skipped.

"What plan?"

Martin glanced toward one of the ceiling cameras.

His voice dropped.

"He no longer wants custody."

Grace frowned.

"What does he want?"

Martin answered with only two words.

"No witnesses."

The meaning struck like ice.

Grace instinctively stepped backward.

Martin nodded.

"You finally understand."

"He wants us dead."

Martin looked away.

"I shouldn't be here."

"Then why are you?"

His expression changed.

For the first time in five years...

Grace saw guilt.

Real guilt.

"I owe someone."

"Who?"

Martin reached into his jacket.

Grace stiffened.

Instead of a weapon...

He handed her a small brass key.

"This opens Elevator C."

"What elevator?"

"Basement level."

Grace stared.

"Why are you helping me?"

Martin looked toward Lily.

"Because four years ago..."

His voice cracked.

"...my wife died giving birth to our daughter."

Grace said nothing.

Martin swallowed hard.

"My little girl didn't survive."

Silence hung between them.

"I watched Richard threaten you in that hospital."

Grace's eyes widened.

"You were there?"

"I did nothing."

His shoulders sagged.

"I've regretted it every day since."

Before Grace could respond...

A loud beep echoed through the hallway.

Martin looked up.

The camera above them had rotated.

Richard had noticed.

Martin whispered urgently,

"Go."

"What about you?"

"They'll know I helped."

Grace hesitated.

Martin smiled sadly.

"They already do."

Suddenly, alarms blared.

A mechanical voice echoed through the mansion.

SECURITY BREACH DETECTED.

Martin closed his eyes.

"They're coming."

"Who?"

He answered without looking.

"The private security team."

Boots thundered somewhere nearby.

Not one pair.

Several.

Grace grabbed Lily's hand.

"Run."

Nathan reached the second floor.

The blueprint of the mansion filled his memory.

His grandfather had designed the original estate decades ago.

His father renovated it.

But one room never moved.

The library.

Inside it...

A hidden elevator.

Nathan threw open the library doors.

Books lined every wall.

Nothing unusual.

Then he noticed it.

One shelf.

A history book upside down.

His grandfather's old signal.

Nathan pulled it.

Click.

A section of the bookshelf slid aside.

Behind it stood a narrow elevator.

He smiled.

"I knew it."

The doors opened.

Before he stepped inside...

A voice came from behind him.

"You always were your grandfather's favorite."

Nathan turned.

Richard Cole stood at the library entrance.

Perfectly dressed.

Calm.

Holding a pistol.

Father and son locked eyes for the first time that day.

Richard raised the gun.

"I warned Grace once."

His finger rested on the trigger.

"I'm only going to warn you once."

Nathan didn't move.

Richard's expression remained unreadable.

"Step away from that elevator."

Nathan glanced briefly toward the open doors.

If Martin's key fit this elevator...

Grace was heading here too.

Which meant only one thing.

Whatever lay beneath the mansion...

Contained the truth Richard had spent five years trying to bury.

Nathan slowly smiled.

"For the first time in my life..."

He looked directly into his father's eyes.

"I'm not doing what you tell me."

Richard's finger tightened on the trigger.

May you like

The gunshot shattered the silence.
