CHAPTER 6 The Voice of the Dead

The lights flickered once...

Twice...

Then the underground archive glowed with a pale white light.

Grace stood frozen, the photograph slipping from her trembling fingers.

Lily looked around the vast room with wide eyes.

"Mommy..."

Grace barely heard her.

The woman's voice echoed through hidden speakers once again.

"Nathan... if you're hearing this..."

Grace's breath caught.

"No..."

She knew that voice.

Every Christmas, Nathan had played old home videos of his mother.

Every birthday, he had quietly visited her grave alone.

Every anniversary of her death, he became a different man.

There was no mistake.

It was Elizabeth Cole.

Nathan's mother.

The woman who had officially died in a car accident ten years ago.

Upstairs, Nathan and Richard still faced each other in the library.

The pistol remained steady in Richard's hand.

Then...

A soft chime echoed throughout the mansion.

Richard frowned.

That wasn't supposed to happen.

Every monitor mounted along the library walls suddenly switched on.

Instead of security footage...

A video appeared.

A woman sat behind a wooden desk.

She smiled gently into the camera.

Nathan felt the blood drain from his face.

"...Mom?"

Richard spun toward the screens.

"No."

His calm expression cracked for the first time.

"No!"

Elizabeth looked exactly as Nathan remembered.

Kind blue eyes.

Dark chestnut hair.

The pearl necklace she wore every Sunday.

She smiled directly into the camera.

"If this recording is playing..."

She took a slow breath.

"...then Richard has finally lost control."

Nathan couldn't breathe.

Richard fired a shot into the nearest monitor.

Glass exploded across the floor.

The video continued on every other screen.

Elizabeth kept speaking.

"My dear son..."

Nathan's legs nearly gave out.

"...if you're watching this, it means I wasn't able to protect you."

Richard shouted,

"Turn it off!"

No one answered.

Because no one controlled the system anymore.

Somewhere beneath the mansion...

An old program had awakened.

Grace stared at the nearest monitor inside the archive.

Elizabeth continued.

"This room contains every secret your grandfather ordered me to preserve."

Grace looked around.

Rows upon rows of files.

Financial records.

Medical reports.

Video archives.

Everything.

Elizabeth smiled sadly.

"I knew one day someone would need the truth."

Lily tugged gently on Grace's sleeve.

"The lady is pretty."

Grace nodded absentmindedly.

"She was your grandmother."

Lily blinked.

"I have a grandma?"

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

"You had one."

Elizabeth's recorded voice continued.

"If Richard discovers this archive before Nathan..."

Her smile disappeared.

"...destroy everything."

Grace whispered,

"She knew."

Nathan ignored the gun still pointed at him.

He stepped toward the nearest screen.

His mother's image seemed almost alive.

"Nathan."

Her voice softened.

"You always asked why I kept journals."

Nathan remembered.

When he was little, his mother had written every evening before bed.

Richard had called it a pointless habit.

Elizabeth smiled.

"I wasn't writing memories."

She looked directly into the camera.

"I was collecting evidence."

Nathan slowly turned toward his father.

Richard's jaw tightened.

Elizabeth continued.

"For twenty-three years..."

"I documented every crime Richard committed."

Silence.

Nathan stared.

Richard fired another shot.

Another screen shattered.

Still...

Twenty-three other monitors continued playing.

Elizabeth calmly folded her hands.

"If you're seeing this..."

"...then I am already dead."

Nathan whispered,

"Mom..."

"I want you to understand something."

She smiled gently.

"I did not die in an accident."

Nathan's world stopped.

Richard closed his eyes.

Elizabeth spoke the words Nathan never imagined hearing.

"Richard murdered me."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Nathan looked at his father.

Waiting.

Praying.

Begging him to deny it.

Richard said nothing.

That silence became louder than any confession.

Deep beneath the mansion, Grace covered her mouth.

Elizabeth's eyes glistened on the screen.

"I tried to leave."

She looked down briefly.

"I discovered where the company's money truly came from."

Grace frowned.

Company money?

Elizabeth continued.

"It wasn't inheritance."

"It wasn't investments."

"It was blood."

Nathan heard every word upstairs.

Richard finally lowered the pistol.

His shoulders seemed heavier than before.

Elizabeth continued calmly.

"The Cole fortune began with kidnappings."

Nathan stared in disbelief.

"What..."

"Your grandfather built a private security company."

She paused.

"Officially."

Another pause.

"Unofficially..."

"...they specialized in making people disappear."

Nathan felt sick.

Richard finally spoke.

"Enough."

Elizabeth ignored him.

"Judges."

"Politicians."

"Business rivals."

"Witnesses."

She listed them one by one.

"The company never stopped."

Nathan whispered,

"No..."

Elizabeth nodded sadly.

"It simply became more sophisticated."

Richard looked at Nathan.

"You believe a dead woman?"

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"I believe the only person who never lied to me."

Richard sighed.

"You always loved your mother too much."

Nathan answered,

"And you never loved anyone enough."

For the first time...

Richard's face hardened.

"You know nothing."

Nathan took another step.

"I know you threatened Grace."

Silence.

"You stole five years from my daughter."

Silence.

"You tried to kill me."

Still silence.

"And now I know you killed Mom."

Richard's voice became dangerously quiet.

"I did what was necessary."

Nathan stared.

Richard actually believed it.

Inside the archive, Elizabeth reached the end of the recording.

"Nathan..."

She smiled warmly.

"If Grace is with you..."

Grace froze.

Elizabeth knew.

"I want you to know..."

"I liked her the first day I met her."

Grace began crying.

"I hoped..."

"...one day she'd become my daughter."

Lily looked confused.

"Mommy?"

Grace hugged her tightly.

Elizabeth continued.

"And if the child survived..."

Grace stopped breathing.

"...tell my grandchild..."

She smiled through tears.

"...that I loved her before she was even born."

Lily waved innocently at the screen.

"Hi, Grandma."

Grace broke down completely.

Suddenly...

The recording ended.

Every monitor went black.

For three long seconds...

Nothing happened.

Then a mechanical voice echoed through the archive.

ARCHIVE ACCESS GRANTED.

Metal cabinets unlocked simultaneously.

Thousands of drawers slowly slid open.

Files.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Ledgers.

Everything Richard had hidden for decades.

At the center of the room...

A glass case rose from the floor.

Inside rested a single black leather journal.

A brass plaque beneath it read:

Elizabeth Cole

Private Diary

Volume 27

Grace stared at it.

Twenty-seven volumes.

Twenty-seven years of secrets.

Before she could take a step...

The elevator behind her dinged.

Its doors slowly opened.

Several armed security guards stepped out.

Then Richard himself emerged.

He looked directly at Grace.

Then at Lily.

Then at the diary.

His expression remained calm.

But his eyes had become something else entirely.

Desperate.

He raised his pistol.

"Give me the diary..."

May you like

"...or I shoot the child."
