CHAPTER 11 The Ledger

Silence settled over the vault.

Richard Cole's body lay motionless on the cold concrete floor.

For years, he had been the most powerful man in the room.

Now he was only a corpse.

Nathan barely looked at him.

His eyes were fixed on the black book in Lily's hands.

Elizabeth's face had gone pale.

"Oh no..."

Nathan stepped closer.

"What do you mean it isn't your diary?"

Elizabeth pointed toward the leather cover.

"I noticed it the moment Lily picked it up."

Grace frowned.

"It came from your display case."

Elizabeth slowly shook her head.

"No."

"My diary was brown."

Everyone stared.

"This one..."

She whispered.

"...is black."

Nathan looked more carefully.

She was right.

The leather wasn't worn with age.

It looked newer.

The edges were reinforced with carbon fiber.

There was no title.

No initials.

No date.

Only a small silver emblem pressed into the center.

A perfect circle.

Inside it...

The number 7.

Nathan felt a chill crawl up his spine.

"The same symbol..."

Sarah Bennett nodded grimly.

"The same one on the monitors."

Lily looked around at the adults.

"Did I pick the wrong book?"

Nathan knelt beside her.

"No."

He smiled gently.

"I think you picked the most important one."

She handed it to him without hesitation.

"Here."

Nathan reached for it.

The moment his fingers touched the cover...

A tiny green light flashed.

BEEP.

Everyone froze.

The book vibrated once.

Then a calm electronic voice emerged from inside it.

Biometric verification initiated.

Martin blinked.

"It's talking."

Nathan instinctively pulled his hand away.

The voice continued.

Identity confirmed.

Nathan Cole.

Sarah's eyes widened.

"That's impossible."

The book clicked softly.

A hidden compartment opened in its spine.

Inside was a fingerprint scanner.

Nathan stared.

"It recognized me."

Elizabeth whispered,

"It was waiting for you."

Sarah stepped forward.

"Mr. Cole."

Nathan looked at her.

"I need you to give me that book."

Grace immediately moved beside him.

"No."

Sarah remained calm.

"It belongs to the federal government."

Arthur laughed bitterly.

"No."

"It belongs to whoever survives."

Sarah's expression hardened.

"This isn't a negotiation."

Arthur tapped his cane against the floor.

"It never was."

Nathan looked from Sarah to the mysterious ledger.

"What's inside it?"

No one answered.

Even Elizabeth looked uncertain.

"I've never seen it before."

Martin frowned.

"Richard never mentioned it."

Grace looked at Sarah.

"You know."

Sarah hesitated.

That hesitation told Nathan everything.

"You do."

Sarah slowly exhaled.

"We've heard rumors."

"What kind of rumors?"

She looked directly at the black cover.

"A financial ledger."

Nathan frowned.

"So?"

Sarah answered quietly.

"Not money."

"People."

The room fell silent again.

Nathan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Sarah chose her words carefully.

"Every organization keeps records."

"Employees."

"Assets."

"Operations."

She pointed toward the book.

"If the rumors are true..."

"...that ledger contains every person controlled by Organization Seven."

Martin whispered,

"Names?"

Sarah nodded.

"Real names."

"Aliases."

"Bank accounts."

"Political connections."

Nathan slowly understood.

"This could destroy them."

Sarah answered honestly.

"Or hand them exactly what they came here to recover."

A sudden metallic clang echoed from somewhere above.

Everyone looked up.

Another clang.

Closer.

One of the agents spoke into his radio.

Still only static.

Then...

Footsteps.

Not one pair.

Several.

Heavy.

Disciplined.

Moving through the ventilation system.

Grace instinctively picked Lily up.

Nathan slipped the ledger under his jacket.

Arthur looked toward the ceiling.

"They're here."

One of Sarah's agents hurried to the security monitor.

The cameras flickered back to life.

Every hallway above the archive appeared.

Empty.

Then Camera Twelve glitched.

A figure stood there.

Black tactical clothing.

Featureless mask.

No insignia.

A second later...

The feed went black.

Camera Eleven.

Another figure.

Gone.

Camera Ten.

Gone.

One by one...

The cameras died.

They weren't being disabled.

They were being passed.

The intruders were getting closer.

Sarah quietly issued orders.

"Positions."

The agents spread out.

Weapons raised.

Nathan looked at Elizabeth.

"Can you move?"

She nodded.

"Slowly."

Arthur stood beside her wheelchair.

"I'll push."

Elizabeth smiled faintly.

"You always were a gentleman."

Arthur chuckled.

"I was trying to impress you."

Even now...

She laughed.

A loud metallic bang echoed behind the vault door.

Then another.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Someone was using a hydraulic breaching ram.

The reinforced steel bent inward.

Sarah counted silently.

"They'll be through in under a minute."

Nathan looked around.

"There has to be another exit."

Elizabeth answered.

"There is."

Everyone turned toward her.

She pointed deeper into the archive.

"Behind Shelf Forty-Two."

Martin frowned.

"I've worked here for twenty-three years."

"I know."

Elizabeth smiled.

"I built it after you left."

They hurried toward the far end of the vault.

Behind them...

The pounding grew louder.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Cracks spread across the vault door.

Lily buried her face against Nathan's neck.

"Daddy..."

"Yes?"

"Are the bad people coming?"

Nathan answered honestly.

"I think so."

She thought for a moment.

"Then don't let go."

His throat tightened.

"I won't."

Elizabeth stopped before an ordinary bookshelf.

She reached toward a dusty brass lamp.

Turned it twice.

Pulled it once.

Nothing happened.

She frowned.

Arthur whispered,

"Try the third book."

She smiled.

"You remembered."

Arthur shrugged.

"I installed it."

Elizabeth pulled a faded copy of Treasure Island.

A hidden section of the wall slowly slid aside.

Behind it...

A narrow stone tunnel disappeared into darkness.

Martin stared.

"I never knew."

Elizabeth smiled sadly.

"That was the point."

Sarah motioned toward the tunnel.

"Go."

Nathan hesitated.

"What about you?"

"We'll hold them."

Grace shook her head.

"You'll be killed."

Sarah met her eyes.

"Maybe."

She looked at Nathan.

"But if that ledger gets out..."

"...millions of lives could change."

Nathan understood.

This wasn't about his family anymore.

It was bigger than all of them.

Arthur began pushing Elizabeth's wheelchair into the tunnel.

Grace followed.

Nathan carried Lily with one arm and kept the ledger pressed tightly beneath his jacket.

Martin entered last.

Sarah remained behind with her agents.

The hidden passage began closing.

Just before the wall sealed...

Nathan looked back.

"Director."

Sarah looked up.

"Thank you."

She smiled faintly.

"Don't thank me yet."

The stone wall closed.

Darkness swallowed the tunnel.

Seconds later...

A deafening explosion shook the passage.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

The battle had begun.

Nathan turned on the flashlight from his phone.

The narrow tunnel stretched endlessly ahead.

Cold air drifted toward them.

Arthur whispered,

"This leads outside the estate."

Nathan nodded.

Then Lily tugged gently on his sleeve.

"Daddy."

"What is it?"

She pointed her tiny finger at the black ledger.

A thin strip of paper had slipped out from between its pages during the explosion.

Nathan carefully pulled it free.

It wasn't paper.

It was an old photograph.

He held it under the flashlight.

Everyone stopped walking.

The photograph showed seven people standing together around a conference table.

Arthur was there.

Richard was there.

Elizabeth was there.

But the seventh person standing in the center...

Made Arthur stumble backward.

His face turned white.

"No..."

Nathan looked at him.

"You know him?"

Arthur whispered,

"I buried that man..."

May you like

"...thirty years ago."
