CHAPTER 10 The Woman Who Had Been Watching

The underground vault fell silent.

Only the hum of emergency lights and the distant groan of settling steel broke the stillness.

The woman in the black suit stepped forward, her polished shoes clicking against the concrete floor.

Behind her, eight heavily armed federal agents fanned out with practiced precision.

Every weapon was pointed at Richard Cole.

She held up a leather badge.

"My name is Director Sarah Bennett."

Her voice was calm.

Measured.

"We've been watching this family for twenty-two years."

Nathan frowned.

"Watching... us?"

Sarah looked at him.

"No."

She shook her head.

"Watching him."

She nodded toward Richard.

Richard gave a dry laugh despite the restraints around his wrists.

"So."

"You finally came out of hiding."

Sarah didn't smile.

"You've been harder to arrest than expected."

Richard looked almost amused.

"I've never broken the law."

Sarah opened a thick evidence folder.

"Officially."

Grace tightened her grip on Lily.

She wasn't celebrating.

Something about Sarah felt... strange.

Too composed.

Too perfectly timed.

She had arrived seconds after the archive had opened.

As though she had known exactly when to appear.

Martin noticed the same thing.

He quietly asked,

"How did you know about this place?"

Sarah answered without hesitation.

"We built part of it."

Silence.

Nathan stared.

"What?"

Sarah nodded.

"Fifteen years ago, this vault became part of an ongoing federal operation."

Arthur Cole's eyes narrowed.

"I never agreed to that."

Sarah looked at him.

"You didn't have a choice."

Arthur frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The government seized the original blueprints."

Arthur's expression darkened.

"I was never informed."

Sarah replied evenly,

"Because officially..."

"...you were dead."

Richard began laughing.

Not loudly.

Not wildly.

Just quietly.

The kind of laugh that made everyone uncomfortable.

Nathan looked at him.

"What's funny?"

Richard met Sarah's eyes.

"You still don't know."

Sarah's expression didn't change.

"Know what?"

Richard smiled.

"The person you've really been hunting."

Sarah closed her folder.

"Richard Cole."

"No."

Richard shook his head.

"I'm only the accountant."

The words echoed through the chamber.

Nathan blinked.

"What?"

Grace frowned.

"Accountant?"

Arthur's face slowly lost its color.

Elizabeth whispered,

"No..."

Sarah's eyes narrowed for the first time.

Richard looked around at everyone.

"You all believed the Cole family was the organization."

He smiled.

"It never was."

A long silence followed.

Then Richard quietly continued.

"The Cole family works for someone."

Nathan stared at him.

"My grandfather built the company."

"Yes."

"My father ran it."

"Yes."

"So who..."

Richard smiled.

"We're contractors."

Martin looked genuinely shocked.

"That's impossible."

Richard turned toward him.

"You've spent twenty-three years filing legal paperwork."

He chuckled.

"You've never wondered who approved the largest payments?"

Martin opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because he had wondered.

Many times.

Sarah stepped closer.

"This is another lie."

Richard shrugged.

"Search the offshore accounts."

"We already did."

"You found nothing."

Sarah remained silent.

Richard smiled wider.

"Exactly."

Nathan noticed something.

For the first time...

Sarah looked uncertain.

Lily tugged gently on Nathan's sleeve.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Why is Grandpa smiling?"

Nathan didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

Richard suddenly looked directly at Sarah.

"Tell me."

She remained silent.

"How many directors have held your position before you?"

Sarah frowned.

"Four."

Richard nodded.

"And before them?"

Silence.

Richard looked almost sympathetic.

"You've spent your career chasing shadows."

Sarah answered quietly,

"We've dismantled dozens of criminal networks."

Richard smiled.

"You dismantled branches."

The room felt colder.

"The tree still stands."

Nathan turned toward Arthur.

"Is he telling the truth?"

Arthur didn't answer immediately.

Finally...

He whispered,

"I hoped he wasn't."

Nathan stared.

"You knew?"

Arthur slowly nodded.

"When I founded Cole Security..."

He looked exhausted.

"...I believed I was accepting government contracts."

Sarah frowned.

"What changed?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

"I eventually learned..."

"...our clients weren't governments."

He looked toward Richard.

"They were people wealthier than governments."

Grace felt a chill.

Elizabeth quietly added,

"They had no names."

"Only numbers."

Sarah's radio suddenly crackled.

An agent answered.

His face changed instantly.

"Director."

"What?"

"We've lost communications."

"With whom?"

"Everyone."

The agent held up the radio.

Only static.

Another agent checked his phone.

"No signal."

A third looked toward the elevator.

"The satellite link is down."

Sarah's expression hardened.

"Jamming?"

The communications specialist slowly nodded.

"Military-grade."

Richard laughed again.

"They're awake."

The lights flickered.

Then every monitor inside the archive switched on.

A single symbol appeared.

Not a company logo.

Not a government seal.

Just a black circle with a white number inside.

7

Richard's smile disappeared.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

Real fear.

He whispered,

"They came themselves."

Sarah stared at the screen.

"What is Seven?"

Richard answered without taking his eyes off the monitor.

"Not what."

He swallowed.

"Who."

A distorted voice echoed through hidden speakers.

Neither male nor female.

Cold.

Mechanical.

"Richard Cole."

Richard lowered his head.

"Yes."

"You have failed."

"I know."

"You exposed operational assets."

"...Yes."

Nathan looked around.

"Who's talking?"

Nobody answered.

The voice continued.

"Protocol Black."

Sarah's eyes widened.

"No..."

She knew the term.

One of her agents whispered,

"Director?"

She answered quietly,

"It means..."

She couldn't finish.

Richard finished for her.

"They erase everyone."

The emergency lights suddenly went dark.

The vault plunged into complete blackness.

Lily screamed.

Nathan wrapped one arm around her and reached for Grace with the other.

Then...

One by one...

Tiny red laser dots appeared across the room.

On walls.

On the floor.

On people's chests.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

Sniper sights.

Someone was aiming at everyone.

From somewhere beyond the vault.

A calm voice spoke again.

"No witnesses."

Nathan's pulse hammered.

Grace instinctively shielded Lily.

Arthur gripped his cane.

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

Sarah slowly raised both hands.

"Everyone..."

She whispered.

"Don't move."

A single gunshot echoed through the darkness.

Someone cried out.

Then another shot.

The lights snapped back on.

Nathan looked around frantically.

Nobody had been hit.

Except one person.

Richard Cole.

A neat red stain spread across the center of his white shirt.

He looked down in surprise.

Then slowly lifted his eyes toward the monitor displaying the number 7.

He smiled sadly.

"I told you..."

Blood filled his mouth.

"...I'm only..."

He coughed.

"...the accountant."

He collapsed to the floor.

Dead.

At that exact moment, every monitor went black.

Only one sentence remained on the largest screen.

THE LEDGER MUST BE RECOVERED.

Nathan frowned.

"The ledger?"

Grace's eyes widened.

She looked at the black diary still clutched in Lily's tiny hands.

Elizabeth whispered in horror.

"Oh no..."

Nathan turned to her.

"What?"

Elizabeth's voice trembled.

"That isn't my diary."

Everyone froze.

Lily slowly looked down at the book she was hugging.

Confused, she asked softly,

May you like

"Then... whose book is this?"
