CHAPTER 3 The Voice Behind the Walls

Darkness swallowed the mansion.
For one endless second, no one moved.
Then the emergency lights flickered on, bathing every room in a cold crimson glow. The elegant white walls now looked stained with blood.
Lily whimpered.
"Mommy..."
Grace pulled her daughter close, her pulse racing.
Nathan's father's voice echoed calmly through the hidden speakers.
"I see you've finally met your daughter."
A pause.
"I regret that the reunion had to happen this way."
Nathan's jaw tightened.
"What do you want?"
The voice answered almost immediately.
"What belongs to this family."
Nathan laughed bitterly.
"You mean my daughter?"
"I mean the future of Cole Industries."
Victoria lowered her eyes, pretending to be shocked.
Grace noticed.
She wasn't frightened.
She was listening.
Waiting.
Nathan stepped into the center of the kitchen.
"Show yourself."
"I don't need to."
The speakers crackled softly.
"This house contains sixty-four cameras. I can see each of you quite clearly."
Nathan looked around.
Tiny black lenses were hidden in the ceiling molding, behind paintings, inside smoke detectors.
His father had been watching this house all along.
Even before Grace arrived.
Even before today.
"You planned this," Nathan said.
"I prepared for every possibility."
Grace closed her eyes.
Nothing had changed.
Richard Cole still controlled every room before anyone entered it.
Five years ago, he had walked into her tiny apartment with the same calm voice.
The same expensive suit.
The same promise.
"Disappear, or neither you nor your child will live peacefully."
She had believed he was bluffing.
Until a truck nearly forced her off the road the next morning.
Until her apartment was broken into.
Until every job offer mysteriously disappeared.
She hadn't needed another warning.
She vanished.
She changed her name.
She gave birth alone.
She spent five years running.
And somehow...
He had still found them.
Nathan's voice pulled her back.
"You're done controlling my life."
Richard chuckled.
"I've controlled your life since the day you were born."
Nathan felt anger boiling beneath his skin.
"No."
"You attended the university I selected."
Silence.
"You became CEO because I permitted it."
Nathan's fists clenched.
"You dated Victoria because I introduced her."
Victoria looked down.
Nathan slowly turned toward her.
"What?"
She refused to meet his eyes.
Richard continued.
"You believed every decision was your own."
Another pause.
"That illusion amused me."
Nathan stared at Victoria.
"Tell me he's lying."
She remained silent.
His heartbeat quickened.
"Victoria."
Still nothing.
Grace already knew the answer.
Nathan simply hadn't reached it yet.
Finally, Victoria whispered,
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Nathan stepped backward.
"You knew?"
"I didn't know about the child."
"But you knew we met because your father arranged it."
Victoria nodded once.
Nathan felt the room tilt.
For three years...
Every vacation.
Every charity gala.
Every anniversary dinner.
Every conversation about marriage.
Every discussion about children.
Everything had been engineered.
He wasn't living his own life.
He was performing in someone else's script.
Outside, Martin Ellis spoke quietly with the police officers.
Neither officer looked comfortable anymore.
One finally asked,
"Is this really an emergency custody case?"
Martin answered without emotion.
"It will become one."
"What does that mean?"
Martin didn't reply.
Inside the mansion, Richard spoke again.
"Nathan."
"What?"
"You have exactly five minutes."
"For what?"
"Hand Lily over voluntarily."
Nathan laughed.
"And if I don't?"
A long silence followed.
Then Richard answered in the same calm voice.
"I'll destroy Grace."
Grace closed her eyes.
There it was.
The threat she had expected.
Nathan looked toward her.
"What does he mean?"
Grace swallowed.
"He can."
Nathan shook his head.
"No one has that much power."
Grace almost smiled.
"You still believe the law protects ordinary people."
Richard interrupted.
"Allow me to demonstrate."
A television in the living room switched on by itself.
News footage appeared.
Breaking News.
Local Housekeeper Suspected in Multi-State Financial Fraud Investigation
Grace stared in disbelief.
Her photograph filled the screen.
The reporter continued.
"Authorities believe Grace Carter has used multiple identities while laundering funds through domestic service agencies..."
Nathan grabbed the remote.
The television wouldn't turn off.
Another screen activated.
Then another.
Every television in the mansion showed the same broadcast.
Grace whispered,
"It started."
Nathan looked at her.
"What?"
"The smear campaign."
Richard answered instead.
"By tomorrow morning..."
The news changed.
Another headline.
Police Seeking Information Regarding Missing Child
Lily's school photograph appeared.
Nathan's blood froze.
"...every television station will believe Grace kidnapped Lily."
Grace began shaking.
"No..."
Richard ignored her.
"The courts will agree."
Another screen changed.
Social media exploded with edited photographs.
Grace yelling.
Grace crying.
Grace running.
Every image carefully selected to paint her as unstable.
Nathan's business mind recognized the speed.
Someone had prepared all of this weeks ago.
Maybe months.
Richard wasn't reacting.
He was executing a plan.
Nathan suddenly remembered something.
His phone.
He dialed his company's cybersecurity director.
No signal.
Every network inside the mansion had been jammed.
Richard spoke again.
"You cannot call for help."
Nathan walked toward the nearest window.
Steel shutters.
Three inches thick.
Military grade.
"This is illegal."
Richard laughed softly.
"Only if someone proves it."
Grace looked at Nathan.
"You have to listen."
"I'm listening."
"There are documents."
"What documents?"
"They explain everything."
"Where?"
She hesitated.
"If I tell you..."
Richard's voice interrupted.
"Grace."
She froze.
"You disappoint me."
The crimson lights suddenly flickered again.
A new image appeared on every television.
A hospital room.
Grace gasped.
Nathan stared.
The footage was dated four years earlier.
Grace lay unconscious after giving birth.
A nurse entered.
Then another man.
Richard Cole.
Nathan watched his father walk toward the newborn baby.
Toward Lily.
His father looked down at the infant.
Then spoke to someone off-camera.
"If the mother refuses..."
"...remove the child."
Nathan's heart stopped.
The recording cut off.
Richard sighed.
"I wondered where that recording went."
Grace whispered,
"The nurse..."
Nathan looked at her.
"There was one nurse who helped me."
"You have the recording?"
Grace nodded.
"I have much more."
Richard's voice hardened for the first time.
"Grace."
"You never found everything."
Nathan slowly understood.
This wasn't just about Lily anymore.
Grace possessed evidence.
Evidence capable of destroying the Cole family.
Richard spoke again.
"Final offer."
Nathan remained silent.
"Give me the child."
"No."
Richard sighed.
"I expected that answer."
A loud explosion echoed from somewhere beneath the mansion.
The entire floor trembled.
Lily screamed.
Grace nearly fell.
Nathan rushed to steady them.
"What was that?"
Victoria's face turned white.
She hadn't expected that.
Another explosion.
Closer.
Then the smell of smoke drifted into the kitchen.
Martin's voice shouted from outside.
"Sir!"
Richard answered calmly through the speakers.
"Since my son refuses to cooperate..."
The emergency lights switched from red to flashing amber.
"...we'll proceed to Phase Two."
Suddenly, the fire alarm blared throughout the mansion.
Sprinklers did not activate.
Instead...
Hidden steel doors began sliding shut, dividing the house into separate sections.
Nathan realized the horrifying truth.
The mansion wasn't trapping them.
It was separating them.
One steel door slammed down between him and Grace.
He lunged forward.
Too late.
The barrier crashed into the floor with a deafening boom.
Grace and Lily were trapped on one side.
Nathan stood on the other.
He pounded the steel with both fists.
"GRACE!"
She screamed his name.
"NATHAN!"
Richard's voice echoed one final time.
"Let's see..."
May you like
"...which parent reaches Lily first."
