Chapter 7: The Dead Man's Last Secret

Marcus reached the holding room first.

The steel door hung half open.

One guard lay unconscious against the wall, his rifle several feet away. Another was slumped over the security console, still breathing but heavily sedated.

Nathan Cross remained in his chair.

The handcuffs were still locked around his wrists.

For a brief second, Marcus thought the report had been wrong.

Then he saw the blood.

A single, precise bullet hole sat in the center of Nathan's forehead.

No signs of struggle.

No panic.

Just a clean execution.

Whoever had done it had entered, fired one shot, and vanished before anyone could react.

Dominic stepped into the room.

His expression didn't change.

But inside, a crucial source of answers had just died.

Marcus inspected the restraints.

"The cuffs were never unlocked."

Daniel frowned.

"Then how did the killer get close enough?"

No one answered.

Dominic noticed something unusual.

Nathan's right hand was clenched into a fist.

"Open it."

Marcus carefully pried the fingers apart.

Inside Nathan's palm was a tiny object wrapped in bloodstained tissue.

A silver key.

No larger than a house key.

Attached to it was a faded paper tag.

Locker 317. Grand Central Terminal.

"That's impossible," Daniel muttered.

"We searched him."

Marcus nodded.

"We did."

"So where did the key come from?"

Dominic looked toward the ceiling.

"The killer."

Marcus frowned.

"You think he left it?"

"No."

"He tried to take it."

Dominic pointed at Nathan's hand.

"Nathan died holding it."

"He never let go."

Even in his final seconds, Nathan had protected something.

Not himself.

The key.

Meanwhile...

Harper crouched inside a narrow crawl space behind the old chapel connected to the estate.

It was cold.

Dark.

Dust floated through tiny cracks in the wooden walls.

Mia had hidden her there years ago during a severe storm when Harper was frightened by thunder.

No one else knew about it.

Or so Mia believed.

Harper hugged her stuffed rabbit.

She remembered exactly what Mia had whispered before collapsing.

"Don't make a sound. Even if you hear me calling."

Minutes passed.

Then...

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone entered the chapel.

Harper held her breath.

A man's voice echoed softly.

"Harper..."

Silence.

"It's okay."

"No one will hurt you."

Harper recognized the voice.

It sounded almost...

Like Dominic.

She almost answered.

Then she remembered something Mia had taught her years ago.

"If someone sounds familiar... but your heart feels afraid... stay hidden."

She covered her mouth and remained perfectly still.

Outside, the footsteps stopped.

Then disappeared.

Back in the holding room...

The medical examiner finished inspecting Nathan.

"He died less than five minutes ago."

Marcus looked around.

"No surveillance."

"No fingerprints."

"No shell casing."

Dominic stared at the wound.

"This wasn't an ordinary bullet."

Marcus leaned closer.

"What do you see?"

"There are no powder burns."

The examiner nodded.

"You're right."

"So?"

Dominic answered quietly.

"He was shot from farther away than this room allows."

Daniel blinked.

"That's impossible."

Dominic slowly looked toward the ventilation grille near the ceiling.

"Unless..."

Marcus immediately climbed onto the desk.

The vent cover had been removed.

Inside...

A narrow firing tunnel had been carved through the wall.

Not recently.

Years ago.

Someone had built hidden sniper positions inside the mansion long before Dominic ever purchased it.

An hour later...

The estate became a construction site.

Every hidden wall.

Every sealed passage.

Every forgotten tunnel was searched.

The discoveries became increasingly disturbing.

Secret observation rooms.

Hidden microphones.

False walls.

Entire corridors that didn't appear on any blueprint.

For years...

Someone had been watching everyone inside the mansion.

Daniel hurried into Dominic's office carrying an old map.

"We finally found the original architectural plans."

Dominic spread them across the desk.

A red line ran beneath the entire estate.

Marcus pointed.

"That's not a tunnel."

"No."

Dominic traced it with his finger.

"It's an escape route."

The passage led beyond the property.

Beyond the woods.

Beyond the river.

Ending at one location.

Grand Central Terminal.

Locker 317.

Nathan's key.

Dominic stood immediately.

"Prepare the convoy."

Marcus hesitated.

"It could be a trap."

"It is."

"And we're still going?"

Dominic loaded a fresh magazine into his pistol.

"If Nathan died protecting that key..."

"Whatever is inside is worth killing for."

Just before they departed...

Mia regained consciousness.

The doctor protested as Dominic entered her room.

"She needs rest."

"I need answers."

Mia managed a weak smile.

"You look tired."

Dominic sat beside her.

"Nathan's dead."

Her eyes widened.

"No..."

"He left us a key."

Mia closed her eyes.

"So he chose."

"What do you mean?"

"He finally remembered."

Dominic frowned.

"Remembered what?"

Mia whispered,

"The promise."

"What promise?"

"The one he made..."

"...to your mother."

Dominic's pulse quickened.

"My mother died twenty-three years ago."

Mia slowly shook her head.

"No."

A long silence filled the room.

Then she opened her eyes.

"That's what they wanted you to believe."

Dominic froze.

Every piece of the puzzle suddenly felt unstable.

His mother.

The mysterious woman in the security footage.

Harper.

Project Falcon.

Nathan's final key.

None of it fit together.

Not yet.

Marcus entered abruptly.

"The convoy is ready."

Dominic stood.

Before leaving, he looked back at Mia.

"When I return..."

"...I want the whole truth."

A tear rolled down Mia's cheek.

"If you find what's inside that locker..."

"You won't need me to tell it."

Three black SUVs rolled out of the estate under heavy escort.

Rain hammered the windshield as they sped toward Manhattan.

Dominic sat silently in the lead vehicle.

The silver key rested in his palm.

Locker 317.

He couldn't shake the feeling that someone wanted him to find it.

The question was...

Why?

As the convoy crossed the bridge into the city, Daniel's phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

His face drained of color.

"Sir..."

Dominic looked up.

"What is it?"

"The estate just called."

Marcus gripped the seat.

"Harper?"

Daniel swallowed.

"No..."

"It's worse."

"The DNA laboratory contacted us."

"They found another sample..."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"From who?"

Daniel looked at the report one last time before speaking.

"The blood on the bullet that killed Nathan..."

"...belongs to a woman who officially died twenty-three years ago."

He looked up.

"The records identify her as..."

Isabella Vale.

May you like

Dominic's mother.
