Chapter 4: The Hidden Vault

The scream lasted less than two seconds.

Then the estate fell silent again.

Not ordinary silence.

The kind that made every trained guard tighten their grip on a weapon.

Marcus was already moving.

"Basement team with me!"

Six armed men followed him toward the underground service tunnels beneath the mansion.

Dominic reached for his pistol.

Before he could leave, Mia caught his wrist.

"Don't."

He looked back.

"There are people under your house."

"I know."

"They're waiting for you."

Dominic studied her face.

"You've been down there before."

Mia hesitated.

Then nodded.

"The first night they locked me in the wine cellar..."

"They took me somewhere deeper."

The underground tunnels had existed long before Dominic bought the estate.

The mansion dated back to the late 1800s.

During Prohibition, smugglers had used hidden passages to move liquor beneath the Hudson Valley.

Dominic had renovated most of them years ago.

Or so he thought.

Marcus's flashlight cut through the darkness.

The tunnel smelled of wet stone and rust.

Thirty yards ahead lay the unconscious security guard.

Alive.

Pulse steady.

A small needle protruded from his neck.

Marcus crouched beside him.

"Sedative."

Professional.

No blood.

No struggle.

Just enough to put him to sleep.

One of the guards pointed ahead.

"Sir..."

A steel door stood open.

Marcus frowned.

"That room shouldn't exist."

Dominic arrived moments later with another security team.

He stared at the opening in the stone wall.

Blueprints of the estate had never shown this chamber.

Someone had hidden an entire section beneath his home.

Marcus pushed the heavy door wider.

Dust drifted into the air.

The room beyond looked untouched for years.

Shelves lined every wall.

Metal filing cabinets.

Old computers.

Stacks of leather-bound ledgers.

A forgotten archive.

Daniel whistled softly.

"This isn't a storage room."

Dominic nodded.

"It's a records vault."

Someone had been collecting information.

For decades.

Marcus opened the nearest cabinet.

Thousands of files.

Every folder carried a name.

Businessmen.

Judges.

Police commissioners.

Politicians.

Crime bosses.

Some alive.

Some long dead.

Each contained photographs, financial records, medical reports, and personal secrets.

Blackmail.

An empire built not on money...

But information.

Daniel looked stunned.

"Who kept all this?"

Dominic answered quietly.

"Someone who wanted control over everyone."

Across the room, Harper wandered closer to an old wooden desk before Mia quickly caught her hand.

"No."

Harper blinked.

"Why?"

Mia stared at the desk.

"I've seen it before."

Dominic turned.

"When?"

"When they dragged me through here."

She pointed toward one drawer.

"They opened that."

Marcus carefully pulled it open.

Inside rested a single velvet box.

Nothing else.

Dominic lifted the lid.

A silver pendant lay inside.

At its center...

A tiny falcon.

The same symbol found behind the photograph.

Marcus whispered,

"The Silver Falcon."

Dominic hadn't heard those words spoken aloud in nearly twenty years.

Years ago...

Before he inherited the Vale Organization...

Rumors circulated about a secret network.

They didn't traffic drugs.

They didn't sell weapons.

They traded identities.

Children disappeared.

Families changed.

Birth records vanished.

People with enough money could erase a past...

Or manufacture an entirely new one.

Authorities had hunted them for decades.

Nothing.

The organization simply disappeared.

Everyone assumed it had collapsed.

Now Dominic realized something terrifying.

It hadn't disappeared.

It had gone underground.

Literally.

Daniel called from another shelf.

"Sir."

Dominic walked over.

"What is it?"

Daniel held up a leather ledger.

The date on the cover read:

1998

Inside were handwritten transactions.

Names.

Payments.

Children.

Every entry listed only three things.

Date.

Code number.

Amount.

Until one page.

That page had actual names.

Dominic froze.

Nathan Cross

Payment Received.

Three Million Dollars.

Purpose:

Transfer of Infant Alpha-17.

Marcus looked up sharply.

"What the hell..."

Dominic turned the page.

Another entry.

Claire Bennett

Courier Assignment.

Year:

Five years ago.

Purpose:

Delivery of Child H-17.

The room became silent.

Harper.

H.

Child H-17.

Mia slowly covered her mouth.

"Oh my God..."

Dominic closed the ledger.

"So Claire wasn't the mastermind."

Marcus nodded.

"She was working for them."

Daniel added quietly,

"And Nathan was getting paid."

Dominic didn't answer.

He couldn't.

Because one question now mattered more than every other.

Who...

Was Harper?

Suddenly...

One of the guards shouted.

"Movement!"

Flashlights swung toward the far wall.

A figure darted behind a row of filing cabinets.

Marcus raised his rifle.

"Stop!"

No response.

The figure ran.

Marcus and two guards chased after it.

The room opened into another tunnel.

This one much older.

Brick walls.

Low ceiling.

Barely enough room to run.

Footsteps echoed ahead.

Marcus gained ground.

Twenty feet.

Fifteen.

Ten.

The stranger slipped through another steel door.

Marcus burst inside.

Empty.

No windows.

No exits.

Nothing.

Only a chair.

A tape recorder.

And an envelope.

Addressed to:

Dominic Vale

Minutes later...

Everyone gathered around the envelope.

Marcus scanned it for explosives.

Nothing.

Dominic opened it.

Inside rested a single cassette tape.

Along with a handwritten note.

PLAY THIS ALONE.

Marcus frowned.

"Don't."

"It could be a trap."

Dominic picked up the tape anyway.

"Probably."

He carried it into the old archive office.

Closed the door.

Inserted the cassette into an ancient recorder sitting on the desk.

Pressed PLAY.

Static.

Five seconds.

Then...

A man's voice.

Calm.

Older.

Confident.

"Hello, Dominic."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

He recognized nothing about the voice.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...then Nathan has already failed."

The room suddenly felt colder.

"I expected better from him."

Dominic remained perfectly still.

"You've spent your life believing you built your empire."

A soft chuckle.

"You didn't."

"We allowed you to."

Dominic's grip tightened around the recorder.

"Everything you own..."

"...every alliance..."

"...every victory..."

"...every enemy you defeated..."

"...was carefully arranged."

Another pause.

"You were never the hunter."

"You were the experiment."

Dominic's heartbeat slowed.

Impossible.

The voice continued.

"And now..."

"...the child has awakened the game again."

Static crackled.

Then one final sentence.

"If you want the truth..."

"...ask your mother."

The tape ended.

Click.

Silence.

Dominic stood frozen.

His mother...

Had died twenty-three years ago.

Or at least...

That was what he'd been told.

Just then, the office door burst open.

Marcus stood there, breathing hard.

"Sir..."

Dominic turned.

Marcus looked as though he'd seen a ghost.

"We just ran Harper's fingerprints through a federal database."

Dominic frowned.

"Why?"

Marcus swallowed.

"They matched."

"Matched who?"

Marcus's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Not a criminal."

"Not a missing child."

"They matched..."

"...your DNA profile."

The room spun.

Marcus finished the sentence neither of them wanted to believe.

"According to the database..."

May you like

Harper is your biological daughter.
