Chapter 3: The Woman in the Garden

Rain began to fall just as Dominic Vale stepped into the east garden.
Not a storm.
Just a cold, steady drizzle that coated the marble statues and darkened the stone pathways like tears running through the estate.
Floodlights illuminated the crime scene.
Armed guards stood in absolute silence.
Nobody dared speak.
At the center of the rose garden lay Claire Bennett.
Her white silk dress was stained with mud and blood.
She looked as though she had been carefully placed there, not dumped. Her hands rested across her chest. Her eyes were closed.
Like someone had prepared a funeral.
Marcus pulled back the security tape.
"We haven't touched anything."
Dominic walked forward.
Every instinct told him to look for the obvious.
So instead, he searched for what didn't belong.
Claire's engagement ring was gone.
Her necklace remained.
Her expensive watch remained.
Her earrings remained.
Robbery wasn't the motive.
He crouched beside her.
There was only one visible wound.
A thin cut across the throat.
Professional.
Quick.
Silent.
No hesitation.
"This wasn't personal," Marcus said quietly.
Dominic shook his head.
"No."
Marcus looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
"If it wasn't personal..."
Dominic pointed toward the words carved into the stone bench beside Claire.
YOU SAVED THE WRONG WOMAN.
"...they wouldn't have left a message."
Someone wanted him to read those words.
Someone wanted him to doubt every decision he had made.
The estate physician arrived moments later.
"Time of death?"
Dominic asked.
The doctor examined Claire's body once more.
"Within the last hour."
Dominic's expression hardened.
"The attack in the medical wing..."
Marcus finished the thought.
"...was a distraction."
Dominic nodded.
While every guard rushed to protect Harper...
Someone had murdered Claire.
Not to silence her.
To erase her.
Daniel hurried down the garden path carrying another tablet.
"Sir."
Dominic looked up.
"What now?"
"We recovered one security camera."
Marcus frowned.
"I thought they were erased."
"They were."
Daniel tapped the screen.
"But one camera was disconnected before the system was wiped."
He handed the tablet to Dominic.
The grainy footage showed the east garden nearly forty minutes earlier.
Claire stumbled through the rain.
She wasn't running.
She was terrified.
Every few seconds she looked over her shoulder.
Like someone was following her.
Then...
She stopped.
Someone stepped into view.
Only a silhouette.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Long black coat.
The camera angle never showed the face.
Claire fell to her knees.
Even without sound, everyone could see she was begging.
The figure leaned closer.
Claire pointed desperately toward the mansion.
Toward Dominic's home.
Toward Harper.
Then...
The screen glitched.
Static filled the image.
When it returned three seconds later...
Claire was alone.
Already dead.
Marcus stared at the screen.
"Three seconds."
Daniel whispered,
"That's all we lost."
Dominic replayed it again.
And again.
Something bothered him.
Not the killer.
Not Claire.
The rain.
During the static...
The rain had stopped.
For exactly three seconds.
Impossible.
Unless...
"The footage was edited."
Daniel blinked.
"What?"
Dominic zoomed into a puddle near Claire's feet.
The raindrops vanished during the missing seconds.
Then instantly returned.
Someone had removed part of the recording.
A professional edit.
Not random corruption.
The killer had been hidden deliberately.
Back inside the mansion...
Harper refused to leave her mother's side.
She sat beside Mia's hospital bed holding her hand tightly.
"Mommy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Will the bad people come back?"
Mia forced a smile.
"I won't let them."
Harper looked unconvinced.
"They already did."
The innocence of the sentence broke everyone in the room.
Even Marcus looked away.
Dominic entered quietly.
Harper immediately ran to him.
"Mr. Vale?"
"Yes?"
"Were they looking for me?"
Dominic didn't answer immediately.
He couldn't.
Because the answer was almost certainly yes.
Instead, he knelt beside her.
"I won't let anyone take you."
Harper nodded.
Then asked the question no one expected.
"Is that why Daddy disappeared too?"
The room froze.
Mia's face turned white.
Dominic slowly looked toward her.
"You told me Harper's father died."
Mia couldn't meet his eyes.
"I..."
Her voice cracked.
"I lied."
Marcus closed the door.
Every guard outside doubled their positions.
Dominic sat opposite Mia.
"Start from the beginning."
She took a deep breath.
"I never knew Harper's father."
Dominic frowned.
"What?"
"It wasn't like that."
"I was hired five years ago by a private agency."
"What agency?"
"They said a newborn girl needed protection."
Marcus exchanged a glance with Daniel.
Protection?
Mia continued.
"They paid me to become her legal mother."
Silence.
"I was never pregnant."
Dominic stared at Harper.
The little girl looked back with innocent confusion, completely unaware that her world had just changed.
"I raised her from the day she was born."
"I signed every document."
"I loved her as my own."
"Because she became my daughter."
Tears streamed down Mia's face.
"But biologically..."
She shook her head.
"I don't know who her parents are."
Dominic felt the room closing in around him.
Everything he believed about this case was collapsing.
Harper wasn't simply a child caught in danger.
She had been hidden.
Protected.
Given a false identity.
Someone had spent years making sure the truth disappeared.
Marcus's phone suddenly vibrated.
He answered.
His face changed instantly.
"What?"
Dominic stood.
"What happened?"
Marcus lowered the phone slowly.
"Our team searched Claire's apartment in Manhattan."
"And?"
"They found a hidden safe."
"What was inside?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Only one item."
"A birth certificate."
Dominic's heartbeat slowed.
"For Harper?"
Marcus nodded.
"No."
The certificate carried another name.
Another infant girl.
Born...
On the exact same day.
At the exact same hospital.
At the exact same minute.
Twin girls.
One document was stamped DECEASED.
The other had no name.
Only one handwritten sentence across the bottom:
"The wrong twin survived."
At that exact moment, somewhere deep beneath the mansion...
A heavy metal door slowly creaked open.
A security guard's terrified scream echoed through the underground tunnels.
Then...
May you like
Silence.
