Chapter 1: The Locked Cellar

Dominic Vale had stared down assassins without blinking.
He had negotiated peace between rival crime families while knowing that one wrong word would leave bodies on the floor.
He had buried friends.
Created enemies.
Built an empire.
Yet nothing in his thirty-eight years had prepared him for the sight before him.
Mia Carter hung against the ancient wine rack, her wrists shredded by coarse rope that had bitten into her skin for days. Dust clung to her tangled chestnut hair, and every shallow breath sounded like a struggle against invisible hands squeezing the life from her lungs.
Her daughter wrapped tiny arms around her waist, crying so hard she could barely breathe.
"Mommy... Mommy..."
Mia lowered her bruised face onto Harper's head.
"I'm here, sweetheart."
Her voice barely existed.
Just a whisper.
Just enough for Harper to know she wasn't dreaming.
Dominic sliced through the final rope with his combat knife.
The moment Mia's weight gave way, she collapsed.
Without hesitation, Dominic caught her.
She felt impossibly light.
Too light.
Three days without proper food or water had reduced the once energetic housekeeper to someone who looked like she had escaped a nightmare.
Marcus stepped forward.
"Medic is already on the way."
Dominic nodded but never looked away from Mia.
"What happened?"
Her lips trembled.
"They..."
She coughed violently.
"...they said no one would believe me."
Dominic's eyes darkened.
"Who?"
Before Mia could answer, Nathan spoke from the doorway.
"She needs a hospital, not questions."
His voice remained calm.
Measured.
Exactly as it had always been.
But Dominic heard something different now.
Urgency.
Not concern.
Fear.
Dominic slowly turned.
For seventeen years Nathan Cross had been more than an adviser.
He had been family.
The man who helped Dominic survive after his father's assassination.
The man trusted with every financial account.
Every safehouse.
Every shipment.
Every secret.
And yet...
When Harper said her mother had disappeared...
Nathan had dismissed her.
When Dominic questioned the new lock...
Nathan hesitated.
When the cellar opened...
Nathan never looked surprised.
Only worried.
Dominic stepped closer.
"You knew she was here."
Nathan frowned.
"Don't be ridiculous."
"Then explain the lock."
"Claire installed it."
"Without my permission?"
Nathan didn't answer.
Silence echoed through the cellar.
Even Marcus exchanged uneasy glances with the security team.
Dominic had seen this silence before.
In interrogation rooms.
Right before people lied.
Mia suddenly grabbed Dominic's sleeve with surprising strength.
Her fingernails dug into his arm.
"Don't..."
She gasped for air.
"...don't let them..."
Her eyes rolled toward Nathan.
"...take Harper."
The world stopped.
Harper looked up.
"What?"
Nathan's face froze for less than a second.
Then the expression disappeared.
Dominic noticed.
He noticed everything.
Marcus noticed too.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The only sound came from water dripping somewhere inside the centuries-old cellar.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
Dominic looked directly into Nathan's eyes.
"Why would anyone take Harper?"
Nathan laughed softly.
"Mia is dehydrated."
"She's hallucinating."
Dominic didn't respond.
He simply helped Mia stand.
As they walked toward the stairs, Harper refused to let go of her mother's hand.
Every few seconds she looked over her shoulder.
At Nathan.
Like a child watching a monster pretending to be human.
Thirty minutes later...
The estate's private medical suite became a fortress.
Two doctors worked frantically.
An IV restored fluids.
Another nurse cleaned infected wounds around Mia's wrists.
Outside the room, Dominic stood perfectly still.
Marcus approached carefully.
"The entire property is sealed."
"No vehicles have left."
"Phones are confiscated."
"Claire?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Missing."
Dominic finally looked up.
"What?"
"Her room is empty."
"When?"
"No one knows."
Dominic smiled.
A cold smile.
Not because he found anything amusing.
Because every answer created three more questions.
His fiancée vanished.
His housekeeper imprisoned.
His oldest friend lying.
Someone inside the estate had planned everything.
Which meant...
Someone had expected Dominic to stay away longer.
His assistant Daniel hurried down the hallway holding a tablet.
"Sir."
"What?"
"We checked security footage."
Dominic held out his hand.
Daniel swallowed.
"It was erased."
"Completely."
"Every camera covering the wine cellar."
"For how long?"
"Four days."
Marcus cursed under his breath.
Only three people possessed authorization to erase surveillance records.
Dominic.
Nathan.
And...
Claire.
Nathan walked into the hallway as if nothing had happened.
"The police will ask questions."
Dominic answered without looking at him.
"They won't."
"This stays inside the family."
Nathan nodded.
"Good."
Too quickly.
Far too quickly.
Dominic caught it.
Nathan wanted privacy.
Why?
To protect the family's reputation?
Or to protect himself?
Before Dominic could ask another question, one of the nurses burst through the door.
"Mr. Vale!"
He rushed inside.
Mia had awakened.
Her breathing remained weak, but her eyes focused clearly now.
She looked directly at Dominic.
"I remember."
The room fell silent.
Dominic stepped beside the bed.
"Tell me."
She closed her eyes.
"I saw something."
"What?"
"The night before I disappeared..."
She swallowed painfully.
"I was cleaning your office."
Dominic frowned.
"I wasn't home."
"I know."
"There was someone inside."
His pulse slowed.
Years of surviving betrayals had taught him something important.
The truth always arrived one piece at a time.
"And?"
Mia looked toward the closed door.
As if afraid someone might be listening.
"I heard voices."
"Whose?"
She whispered.
"Miss Claire..."
Dominic remained expressionless.
"...and Mr. Cross."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"They didn't know I was there."
"What were they talking about?"
Mia's breathing became uneven.
"They argued."
"About what?"
"They kept saying..."
Her voice cracked.
"...the child."
Harper looked up from the chair beside the bed.
"The child?"
Mia's eyes filled with tears.
"They said..."
Before she could finish...
Every light inside the medical suite suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
An alarm began screaming throughout the mansion.
Red emergency lights flashed once...
Then died.
Someone shouted outside.
"Security breach!"
Gunfire exploded somewhere upstairs.
One shot.
Then another.
Marcus instantly drew his weapon.
"Protect Mr. Vale!"
Dominic reached for Harper.
"Mia, stay down!"
But before anyone could move...
A single flashlight beam appeared in the doorway.
A masked figure stood there.
Holding a silenced pistol.
Pointed directly...
May you like
At Harper.
