Chapter 15: The Last Door

Edwin's body lay motionless on the polished floor.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Harper slowly walked toward the old butler, her small hand still clutching the worn stuffed rabbit.

"He saved me..."

Dominic knelt beside Edwin and gently closed the old man's eyes.

"He did."

Marcus looked toward the shattered window.

"The sniper's gone."

"No," Dominic replied quietly.

"He already got what he came for."

"What do you mean?"

"Silence."

The only man who could explain the past had died protecting Harper.

Not because he was a monster.

Because he had spent years trying to become something else.

Dr. Evelyn Ross carefully unfolded the photograph Edwin had carried.

On the back, hidden beneath faded ink, she found a tiny strip of paper glued into the frame.

It contained only a single set of coordinates.

Marcus immediately recognized them.

"The old Falcon research facility."

Ross nodded.

"The first one."

"They abandoned it twenty years ago."

Dominic stood.

"Then that's where we finish this."

Three hours later...

Before dawn broke over the Hudson Valley, Dominic, Marcus, Isabella, Mia, Harper, Daniel, and a small security team reached the abandoned research complex.

Nature had reclaimed most of the buildings.

Concrete walls were cracked.

Windows had long since shattered.

Vines covered rusted steel doors.

Yet one building still had power.

Someone had been there recently.

Inside, they discovered rows of filing cabinets, damaged servers, and burned documents.

Most of Project Falcon's records had already been destroyed.

Almost.

Harper wandered quietly through the hallway before stopping in front of a plain wooden door.

She looked back at Dominic.

"I think it's here."

No one asked how she knew.

Dominic opened the door.

Inside was a modest office.

No laboratories.

No weapons.

Just shelves filled with journals.

Dr. Ross smiled faintly.

"I know this room."

She walked to the final shelf and removed one notebook.

"My resignation."

Inside was a signed confession describing the experiments, the names of those responsible, and the locations of surviving records that had been hidden in multiple secure archives.

Marcus looked up.

"This is enough."

"Enough for what?"

"To expose everyone who built Falcon."

Dominic slowly closed the notebook.

For years, he had believed justice meant revenge.

Standing in that forgotten room, he realized something had changed.

Harper had changed him.

Weeks later...

The estate no longer felt like a fortress.

Children's drawings decorated one corner of Dominic's office.

The hidden tunnels had been sealed with concrete.

The underground laboratories were turned over to federal investigators.

Every surviving Falcon file had been surrendered as evidence.

Mia officially adopted Harper once again, while Dominic began the legal process of establishing his own parental rights after the truth of Harper's identity was confirmed.

One afternoon, Harper ran across the garden carrying her stuffed rabbit.

"Daddy!"

Dominic looked up from the porch.

She threw herself into his arms.

"Guess what?"

"What?"

"I don't have scary dreams anymore."

He smiled.

"I'm glad."

Harper leaned against his shoulder.

"Do you?"

Dominic looked across the peaceful estate.

For the first time in decades...

"No."

That evening, Isabella joined them on the porch as the sun disappeared beyond the trees.

"You've rebuilt the house."

Dominic nodded.

"It was never the house that needed rebuilding."

She smiled.

"It was the family."

Harper reached out and took both of their hands.

The three of them sat together in silence as the last light of day faded.

Some wounds would never disappear.

Some memories would never leave.

But they no longer ruled their lives.

For the first time since the story began, Dominic Vale wasn't thinking about betrayal, revenge, or the ghosts beneath his home.

He was thinking about tomorrow.

And for him...

May you like

That was enough.

The End
