Chapter 2: The Child They Came For

The masked figure didn't hesitate.

The silenced pistol tracked Harper with terrifying precision, never wavering, as though every movement had been rehearsed a hundred times.

Dominic moved before anyone else.

His body became a shield.

He threw himself between Harper and the gun.

Pop!

The suppressed shot whispered through the darkness.

Glass exploded behind Dominic's shoulder.

A medicine cabinet shattered, sending bottles crashing across the floor.

Marcus fired immediately.

Two deafening shots lit the room.

The masked intruder disappeared into the hallway before the bullets found their mark.

"After him!" Marcus shouted.

Half the security team rushed into the corridor.

The remaining guards formed a circle around Dominic, Mia, and Harper.

Emergency generators finally roared to life.

Dim yellow lights flickered overhead.

The mansion, once elegant and peaceful, suddenly felt like a battlefield.

Dominic never looked toward the fleeing assassin.

His attention remained fixed on Harper.

She was shaking so violently that she couldn't speak.

He knelt beside her.

"Look at me."

Her watery eyes met his.

"Did he hurt you?"

She slowly shook her head.

"No..."

Dominic gently brushed a strand of hair from her face.

"You're safe."

It was the first promise he had made in years that truly frightened him.

Because someone had just invaded the most heavily guarded estate in New York.

Not to steal.

Not to kill him.

But to take a four-year-old girl.

Marcus returned less than three minutes later.

His expression said everything before he spoke.

"Gone."

Dominic wasn't surprised.

"Dead guards?"

"Two unconscious."

"Both struck from behind."

"No fatalities."

Daniel entered moments later carrying a tablet.

"The security network wasn't hacked."

Dominic looked at him.

"Then what happened?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Someone inside manually disabled the power."

Marcus cursed under his breath.

"An insider."

Again.

Another betrayal.

Dominic's eyes slowly scanned everyone standing in the medical suite.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Guards.

House staff.

Fear filled every face.

But fear wasn't guilt.

He had learned long ago that guilty people rarely looked afraid.

They looked...

Careful.

Nathan arrived almost five minutes after the shooting.

Too late.

His shirt was untucked, as if he'd been running.

"What happened?"

Marcus answered before Dominic could.

"Someone tried to kidnap Harper."

Nathan stared at the little girl.

"What?"

His surprise looked convincing.

Almost.

Dominic watched every muscle in Nathan's face.

A tiny tightening around the jaw.

Eyes widening a fraction too late.

A heartbeat of hesitation.

Enough.

Not proof.

But enough.

Nathan looked at Dominic.

"We need to move them somewhere safer."

Dominic answered quietly.

"No."

Nathan frowned.

"They'll attack again."

"I know."

"Then why stay?"

Dominic's voice became ice.

"Because whoever betrayed me already knows every safehouse I own."

Silence.

Nathan couldn't argue.

Because it was true.

Only three people possessed that information.

Dominic.

Nathan.

Claire.

One missing.

One standing in front of him.

Inside the medical room, Mia tried to sit up.

Pain shot through her arms.

Dominic gently stopped her.

"You don't need to force yourself."

"I have to."

"No."

"I remember more."

The room instantly became silent.

Marcus locked the door.

Daniel shut the curtains.

Even the doctors stepped back.

Mia looked toward Harper.

"Sweetheart..."

Harper climbed onto the bed beside her.

Mia kissed her forehead.

"I love you."

"I love you too, Mommy."

Dominic waited patiently.

Finally Mia whispered,

"The night they locked me downstairs..."

"They weren't planning to hurt me."

Dominic frowned.

"What changed?"

"I heard Claire yelling."

Marcus leaned forward.

"Yelling at who?"

"Mr. Cross."

Nathan.

Again.

"They were arguing."

"What about?"

"They kept saying..."

Mia closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"'She isn't supposed to know.'"

Dominic remained silent.

"Then Claire asked..."

Mia's voice dropped even lower.

"'What if Dominic finds out who the girl really is?'"

The room froze.

Dominic looked toward Harper.

The little girl sat quietly, hugging a stuffed rabbit one of the nurses had found upstairs.

Who the girl really is?

Harper noticed everyone staring.

"Did I do something bad?"

"No," Dominic answered immediately.

"You did nothing wrong."

Mia suddenly grabbed his hand.

"They were talking about Harper."

"I know."

"I swear they were."

Dominic believed her.

Not because of emotion.

Because every piece now pointed in the same direction.

Someone wanted Harper.

Someone feared Mia.

Someone erased cameras.

Someone imprisoned witnesses.

This had never been about a missing maid.

It had always been about a child.

Later that evening...

Dominic entered his private office alone.

Everything looked untouched.

Mahogany desk.

Leather chairs.

Family portraits.

Ancient whiskey collection.

Yet now every object felt unfamiliar.

Like someone else had been living inside his life.

He opened the hidden safe behind a painting.

Nothing was missing.

Cash.

Passports.

Documents.

Weapons.

Then his eyes stopped.

One folder sat slightly crooked.

Dominic never left anything crooked.

He opened it.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Most were years old.

Business meetings.

Charity events.

Political fundraisers.

Nothing unusual.

Until the final picture.

Dominic's breathing stopped.

It showed Mia.

Holding a newborn baby.

Standing beside...

Claire.

The date stamped across the bottom made no sense.

Five years ago.

Dominic stared at it.

Harper was only four.

The dates didn't match.

Someone had altered something.

Or hidden an entire year.

He flipped the photograph over.

On the back, written in elegant handwriting, were six words.

"She must never know the truth."

No signature.

Only one symbol.

A silver falcon.

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

He had seen that emblem before.

Years ago.

Long before he built his empire.

Long before Nathan entered his life.

It belonged to an organization everyone believed had disappeared.

A secret syndicate that specialized in trafficking identities, laundering bloodlines, and making children vanish without leaving records.

Dominic hadn't heard its name in almost twenty years.

Until now.

Behind him, the office door slowly creaked open.

Marcus stepped inside.

"Sir..."

Dominic didn't turn around.

"What is it?"

Marcus looked pale.

"We found Claire."

Dominic finally faced him.

"Where?"

Marcus's voice was barely above a whisper.

"In the east garden."

"Is she alive?"

Marcus hesitated.

Then answered.

"No."

"And someone carved one sentence into the stone beside her body..."

Marcus swallowed hard.

"It says..."

'YOU SAVED THE WRONG WOMAN.'
