Chapter 5: A Daughter He Never Knew

Dominic Vale did not react.

Not at first.

The words hung in the air like smoke after an explosion.

Harper is your biological daughter.

Marcus wished he had never said them aloud.

Daniel stared between the two men, convinced there had to be a mistake.

Finally, Dominic spoke.

"Run it again."

Marcus nodded immediately.

"We already did."

"How many times?"

"Three."

"And?"

"The result never changed."

Dominic extended his hand.

"The report."

Marcus passed him the tablet.

Across the screen glowed the federal biometric report.

DNA Match: 99.9987%

Relationship Probability: Biological Parent.

Dominic read every line.

Then read them again.

He wasn't searching for confirmation.

He was searching for an error.

There wasn't one.

Harper sat in the medical room, drawing with a blue crayon on the back of an old prescription form.

She was sketching a little house.

A tree.

A woman holding her hand.

Then she added a tall man standing beside them.

Mia smiled weakly.

"Who's that?"

Harper looked up.

"Mr. Vale."

Mia blinked.

"Why did you draw him?"

Harper shrugged.

"Because he keeps saving us."

Before Mia could answer, the door opened.

Dominic stepped inside.

For the first time since meeting Harper, he looked at her differently.

Not as a child under his protection.

But as someone whose smile carried a piece of him he had never known existed.

Harper ran toward him.

"Mr. Vale!"

She hugged his leg without hesitation.

Dominic froze.

His entire life had been built on caution.

Trust no one.

Need no one.

Show no weakness.

Yet this tiny child embraced him without fear.

He slowly rested a hand on her head.

An unfamiliar warmth spread through his chest.

Then another thought struck him.

If Harper was his daughter...

Who was her mother?

Marcus closed the door behind them.

"We haven't told Mia."

Dominic nodded.

"Don't."

"Not yet."

Mia had already endured enough.

If the DNA results were real, then someone had manipulated both their lives years ago.

He wasn't going to make assumptions.

Not anymore.

Facts first.

Answers second.

Daniel entered carrying another folder.

"We found something in the hidden archive."

Dominic looked up.

"What?"

"A medical file."

The folder was old.

Its corners had yellowed with age.

Inside were records from a private fertility clinic that had been shut down nearly five years earlier.

Most pages were missing.

Only one remained.

Patient Name:

Dominic Vale

Date:

Five years ago.

Dominic frowned.

"I've never been there."

Marcus flipped the page.

"You donated blood after the explosion at the charity gala."

Dominic remembered.

A bomb had detonated outside a children's hospital.

He had helped carry survivors.

Doctors had asked for emergency blood donations.

Nothing unusual.

Daniel continued reading.

"The clinic processed your blood."

Dominic's expression darkened.

"They had no permission to keep it."

"No."

"They didn't."

Attached to the final page was one sentence.

GENETIC MATERIAL RETAINED PER PROJECT FALCON.

Dominic closed the file.

"They stole my DNA."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"And somehow..."

"They created Harper."

"No."

Dominic interrupted.

"They didn't create her."

"They used me."

Someone had engineered the circumstances years before Harper was ever born.

This wasn't chance.

It wasn't romance.

It wasn't betrayal.

It was planning.

Meanwhile...

Miles away from the estate...

In an abandoned church overlooking the Hudson River...

A candle flickered inside the dark sanctuary.

A man wearing black leather gloves sat alone in the front pew.

His face remained hidden beneath the shadows.

Another figure approached.

"The girl survived."

"I know."

"Claire is dead."

"I know."

"Nathan failed."

Silence.

The older man smiled faintly.

"He served his purpose."

"What about Dominic?"

The man looked toward the stained-glass window.

"He finally opened the first door."

"The first?"

"There are many."

He stood.

His voice echoed through the empty church.

"Prepare Phase Two."

Back at the estate...

Nathan Cross sat handcuffed inside Dominic's private security office.

He had not been charged.

Not yet.

But he was no longer free.

Marcus entered with two guards.

Nathan looked up calmly.

"So..."

"You finally decided not to trust me."

Marcus remained expressionless.

"You've earned that."

Nathan sighed.

"You think I kidnapped Mia."

"You think I worked with Claire."

"You think I tried to hurt Harper."

Marcus didn't answer.

Nathan leaned back.

"You still don't understand."

Marcus stepped closer.

"Then explain."

Nathan smiled.

"If I tell you the truth..."

"You'll untie these cuffs?"

"No."

Nathan laughed quietly.

"Didn't think so."

He leaned forward.

"The people chasing Harper..."

"...don't care about money."

Marcus stayed silent.

"They don't care about Dominic's empire."

Silence.

"They only care about one thing."

Marcus finally asked,

"What?"

Nathan looked directly into his eyes.

"Her blood."

At that exact moment...

One of the estate technicians burst into Dominic's office.

"Sir!"

Dominic turned.

"What happened?"

"We restored another deleted file from the archive."

"Show me."

The technician connected a damaged hard drive.

An old security video appeared.

Date:

Five Years Earlier

Location:

Dominic's private garage.

The footage showed Dominic returning home late at night after the charity gala.

He looked exhausted.

As he stepped from his car...

A woman emerged from the shadows.

Her face remained hidden beneath a hood.

She was carrying...

A newborn baby.

Dominic stared at the screen.

"I've never seen this."

The hooded woman handed him a small envelope.

Then placed the baby into his arms.

Dominic watched himself looking down in confusion.

The recording had no audio.

His younger self opened the envelope.

Read it.

His face turned white.

Then...

The video skipped.

Nearly two full minutes vanished.

When the footage resumed...

The woman was gone.

The baby was gone.

Dominic stood alone in the driveway.

As if nothing had happened.

Daniel whispered,

"Someone erased the middle."

Dominic wasn't listening.

He was staring at his own face.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Heartbroken.

As though he had just made the most painful decision of his life.

Then he climbed into his car...

And drove away.

Marcus looked at Dominic.

"Do you remember any of this?"

Dominic's answer came almost immediately.

"No."

There was no hesitation.

No uncertainty.

He truly had no memory of that night.

Then the technician zoomed in on the envelope still visible in Dominic's younger hand.

Across the front were four handwritten words.

FORGET HER TO SAVE HER.

Dominic felt something crack inside his mind.

A memory.

A voice.

A woman's whisper.

"Promise me... if they find us... she'll die..."

The flash vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

Dominic staggered backward, gripping the edge of the desk.

Marcus caught him.

"What is it?"

Dominic looked up, his eyes filled not with fear...

But recognition.

"I've heard that voice before."

Marcus leaned closer.

"Whose voice?"

Dominic whispered the answer.

"...Harper's mother."

And for the first time...

May you like

He realized she might still be alive.
