CHAPTER 8 The Memory They Tried to Erase

Rachel couldn't breathe.
Her trembling fingers clutched the photograph so tightly that the edges bent.
She stared at her own unconscious face lying on a stretcher between Madison and the gray-haired man.
"I... I don't remember this."
Her voice cracked.
"I swear I don't."
Adrian studied the image carefully.
It wasn't a candid snapshot.
It had been taken from a distance with a telephoto lens.
The timestamp in the lower corner caught his attention.
October 14.
Exactly four days before Rachel's reported car accident.
Claire hadn't written the date on the back by accident.
She had been building a timeline.
Natalie leaned closer.
"Rachel... where were you working that week?"
Rachel squeezed her eyes shut.
"I don't know."
"Try."
"I've tried for years."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Everything before the accident is... broken. Like pages torn out of a book."
Emma reached up and held her mother's hand.
"It's okay, Mommy."
Rachel forced a smile through her tears.
Then Emma quietly added,
"You remembered my rabbit."
Rachel blinked.
"What?"
"You never forgot Bunny."
Rachel looked down at the worn stuffed rabbit.
The faded brown fabric.
One missing button eye.
The stitched ear Claire had secretly used to hide the photograph.
A strange feeling washed over her.
Warm.
Familiar.
As if she'd held the rabbit thousands of times before.
She whispered almost unconsciously,
"I promised..."
Everyone looked at her.
Rachel frowned.
"What did you promise?"
"I..."
She pressed a hand against her temple.
"I promised someone..."
Her breathing quickened.
"...that I'd never throw it away."
Adrian's pulse accelerated.
"Who?"
Rachel's lips parted.
No words came.
Then, like lightning splitting the sky, a fragment of memory flashed through her mind.
A woman smiling.
Soft perfume.
A nursery painted pale blue.
A voice saying:
"If anything ever happens to me, keep Bunny safe. Don't let anyone take him."
Rachel gasped.
"Claire."
She staggered backward.
"Claire gave Emma the rabbit."
Emma nodded happily.
"I told you."
Rachel stared at her daughter in disbelief.
"I thought I bought it."
"No."
Emma hugged the toy tightly.
"The pretty lady said Bunny had an important job."
Adrian carefully took the rabbit.
It was older than he'd realized.
The stitching along the belly looked different from the rest.
Hand-repaired.
Recently?
No.
Years ago.
Claire had repaired it herself.
He felt something hard beneath the stuffing.
Not cotton.
Not fabric.
Something small.
Metallic.
He looked at Rachel.
"May I?"
She nodded silently.
Using a small pocketknife, Adrian carefully opened a section of the stitching.
Rachel held her breath.
Natalie leaned closer.
Emma watched without fear.
Inside the rabbit...
Wrapped in clear plastic...
Was a tiny microSD memory card.
No larger than a fingernail.
Everyone stared.
Natalie whispered,
"This is what she was hiding."
Adrian gently removed it.
The plastic wrapping was labeled in Claire's handwriting.
"Copy B."
Copy.
Not original.
Which meant...
There was another version somewhere.
Or there had been.
The underground office suddenly seemed much colder.
Adrian looked around.
"We need a computer."
Natalie pointed toward one of the desks.
"There."
The desktop computer looked newer than everything else in the room.
Someone had maintained it.
He pressed the power button.
Nothing.
No electricity.
Rachel sighed.
"The power's still out."
Adrian frowned.
Then he noticed a small black device beneath the monitor.
A portable emergency battery.
Its indicator still glowed green.
Someone had prepared for a blackout.
He connected the computer.
The screen flickered.
After several long seconds...
Windows loaded.
No password.
Only one icon appeared on the desktop.
CLAIRE
Adrian opened it.
Inside were dozens of folders.
Financial Records.
Photographs.
Emails.
Audio Files.
Videos.
One folder stood apart.
Its name was simple.
IF I'M DEAD
The room fell silent.
He opened it.
Only one file.
PLAY_ME
He inserted the microSD card.
The computer chimed.
A message immediately appeared.
Copy B verified.
Original file missing.
Restoration available.
Natalie frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Before anyone could answer...
The monitor filled with static.
Then...
Claire appeared on the screen.
Alive.
She was sitting in this very room.
Wearing the same blue sweater she'd worn two days before her death.
She looked directly into the camera.
"If you're seeing this..."
She smiled sadly.
"...then I didn't make it."
Adrian couldn't speak.
Seeing Claire alive again after three years felt almost unbearable.
"I know you're scared."
She looked straight into the camera.
"Adrian..."
"I wish I could tell you everything."
"But I don't have enough time."
She reached toward something off camera.
A folder.
"I've discovered a network."
"They don't just steal companies."
"They don't just blackmail politicians."
"They erase people."
Rachel frowned.
"Erase?"
Claire continued.
"I don't mean murder."
"I mean..."
"They erase memories."
The room froze.
Claire opened another file.
Photographs appeared on the screen.
People.
Dozens of them.
Each had a date beneath their face.
Some were marked Recovered.
Others...
Lost.
Claire looked back at the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"Rachel is one of them."
Rachel burst into tears.
Claire nodded gently, as if she'd expected that reaction.
"They'll make everyone believe she had an accident."
"But that's only the cover story."
"They've already chosen what memories she'll keep..."
"...and which ones they'll take."
Adrian felt sick.
Claire leaned closer to the camera.
"If Rachel remembers..."
"They'll come for her again."
Suddenly...
The video glitched.
The image distorted.
Horizontal lines tore across the screen.
Claire's face disappeared for a moment.
When it returned...
She looked frightened.
Not the calm woman from moments before.
She was staring at something behind the camera.
"No..."
She whispered.
"They found me."
The office door behind Claire slowly began to open.
Someone stepped inside.
Only a silhouette.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
The same build as the hooded intruder.
Claire looked directly into the camera.
Her final words came in a hurried whisper.
"Adrian..."
"Whatever happens..."
"Don't trust..."
The video cut to black.
A message replaced it.
FILE CORRUPTED
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then the computer speakers crackled once more.
A synthetic voice, clearly not Claire's, echoed through the room:
Unauthorized playback detected.
The monitor flashed red.
Another message appeared.
Remote connection established.
Adrian's blood ran cold.
Someone...
Somewhere...
May you like
Had just learned they had accessed Claire's files.
