CHAPTER 3 The Letter Claire Never Meant to Leave Behind

Madison didn't answer.

For a heartbeat, the room was so still that Adrian could hear the rain tapping against the mansion windows.

Every pair of eyes settled on Madison.

She looked from the envelope...

...to Adrian...

...then to the hidden compartment inside the chest.

"I..." she began.

Nothing followed.

Natalie stepped forward.

"Answer him."

Madison swallowed.

"I guessed."

"You guessed?" Natalie repeated, her voice dripping with disbelief.

"I assumed Claire might have hidden something."

Adrian's expression never changed.

"And why would you assume that?"

Madison hesitated.

"Because... Claire was always sentimental."

No one spoke.

The explanation sounded hollow even to her.

Emma hugged her rabbit tighter.

"You're lying again."

Rachel immediately pulled her daughter back.

"Emma!"

But Adrian raised a hand.

"Let her stay."

He turned back to the envelope.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Claire had always written in elegant blue ink.

Every curve of every letter belonged to her.

The envelope was sealed with dark red wax.

Pressed into the wax was Claire's personal seal.

A tiny lily.

Untouched.

No one had opened it.

Not once.

Adrian's fingers trembled as he broke the seal.

The crack echoed through the hidden room.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

Folded three times.

A small silver key slipped out and landed on the wooden floor.

Clink.

Everyone stared.

Natalie picked it up.

"It's tiny."

"A safety deposit key?" Rachel whispered.

Adrian unfolded the letter.

The first line stole the air from his lungs.

My dearest Adrian,

If you're reading this, then I was right to be afraid.

His hands tightened.

He continued reading aloud.

I pray this letter never reaches you.

If it does, it means I failed to protect us.

Please don't interrupt. Read everything before deciding whom to trust.

Madison slowly took one step backward.

No one noticed except Emma.

The little girl watched her without blinking.

Adrian continued.

Someone close to me has been lying for a very long time.

I don't yet have enough proof to accuse anyone.

But I have enough to know I am in danger.

Natalie covered her mouth.

Margaret shook her head.

"This can't be real..."

Adrian ignored everyone.

If I disappear, do not believe it was simply an accident.

Start with the bluebird.

Everything begins there.

He stopped.

The missing porcelain bird.

Claire had mentioned it.

Emma had mentioned it.

Now the letter did too.

Adrian continued reading.

Inside the bluebird is something no one expects.

Not jewelry.

Not money.

Truth.

Rachel frowned.

"Inside it?"

Natalie looked toward the empty cabinet.

"It was hollow?"

Adrian suddenly remembered.

Years ago, Claire had insisted on repairing a tiny crack beneath the bird's wing instead of replacing it.

She wouldn't let anyone else touch it.

At the time, he'd teased her.

"It's just a figurine."

She'd smiled.

"No. It's my insurance policy."

He had laughed.

Now...

The joke wasn't funny anymore.

He continued.

If the bluebird is missing...

Then someone found out I was hiding evidence.

Every eye drifted toward Madison.

She immediately shook her head.

"I never touched it."

No one replied.

Adrian kept reading.

Do not accuse anyone until you recover what was hidden.

If you move too quickly...

More people could die.

The room fell silent again.

Then came the final paragraph.

Adrian's voice nearly broke.

There's one more thing.

If Emma ever tells you she's seen me...

Believe her.

The words echoed in the room.

Rachel looked as though the floor had vanished beneath her feet.

Natalie stared at Emma.

Adrian slowly lowered the letter.

He looked at Rachel.

"You've brought Emma here before?"

Rachel immediately shook her head.

"No."

"Never?"

"Never."

Adrian knelt in front of Emma.

"Sweetheart..."

"Did you know Claire?"

Emma nodded.

"Yes."

Rachel's face drained of color.

"No, honey."

Emma looked confused.

"The pretty lady."

"What pretty lady?"

"The one who sings."

A chill swept through the room.

Rachel whispered desperately,

"Emma has an active imagination."

But Emma continued.

"She sings when it rains."

The rain outside intensified.

Drumming against the windows.

Emma pointed toward the dressing room.

"She was standing there."

Every adult turned instinctively.

The doorway was empty.

Of course it was.

Rachel quickly scooped Emma into her arms.

"We're leaving."

Emma resisted.

"No."

Rachel's voice cracked.

"We're going home."

"No!"

Emma suddenly began crying.

"She said not to leave yet!"

Rachel froze.

"What?"

Emma buried her face in the rabbit.

"She said..."

"...he isn't the only one hiding things."

Adrian slowly stood.

His eyes drifted across the hidden room.

Across the chest.

Across the scattered photographs.

Then...

They landed on Madison.

She was gone.

The doorway stood open.

But Madison had disappeared.

Natalie spun around.

"Where is she?"

No answer.

Adrian rushed into the hallway.

Empty.

Only the distant sound of hurried footsteps echoed somewhere downstairs.

"Madison!"

Silence.

He sprinted toward the grand staircase.

Halfway down, the head butler appeared, breathless.

"Mr. Westwood!"

"What happened?"

"Miss Cole just left."

"Left?"

"She said she forgot something in her car."

Adrian looked through the rain-streaked front windows.

Headlights flashed outside.

Madison's black sedan roared through the estate gates.

Too fast.

Far too fast.

Adrian reached for his phone.

"Call security."

Within seconds, the estate's chief of security answered.

"Sir?"

"Close the gates."

"They're already open, sir."

"Then stop her."

A pause.

Then a strained voice came through the speaker.

"We can't."

"Why not?"

"Someone disabled the gate controls."

Adrian's blood ran cold.

"Disabled?"

"Yes, sir."

"And..."

The guard hesitated.

"What?"

"The surveillance system just went offline."

Every security camera on the estate had gone dark.

At exactly the moment Madison fled.

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

Someone had planned this.

Not tonight.

Long before tonight.

And if Claire had been right...

Then whoever wanted the bluebird...

Already knew Adrian had found the letter.

As thunder shook the mansion, another sound rose from somewhere deep inside the house.

A loud...

Metallic...

BANG.

It came from the second floor.

From Claire's sealed dressing room.

Emma lifted her head instantly.

Her tearful eyes widened.

May you like

"They found it."
