BONUS CHAPTER Claire's Last Night

Three years earlier.

Rain slid down the windows of Westwood Manor.

Claire Westwood stood alone in her dressing room, staring at the blue porcelain bird in her hands.

She wasn't crying.

Not anymore.

There had been tears weeks ago, when she first realized someone close to her had betrayed her.

Tonight...

There was only resolve.

She carefully twisted the bird's left wing.

The hidden compartment clicked open.

Inside rested a tiny memory chip.

No larger than a fingernail.

She removed it and smiled faintly.

"You'll never find this one."

A gentle knock came at the door.

Rachel Bennett stepped inside, carrying baby Emma in her arms.

"I'm sorry to bother you, Mrs. Westwood."

Claire immediately smiled.

"You never bother me."

Emma reached toward Claire with tiny hands.

Claire laughed softly and took the baby into her arms.

"You've gotten heavier."

Rachel smiled.

"She's been eating everything."

Emma grabbed Claire's necklace.

Then laughed.

Claire kissed the little girl's forehead.

"You always know when I'm worried."

Rachel's smile slowly faded.

"You've barely slept."

Claire looked toward the rain outside.

"I don't think I'll be sleeping much anymore."

Rachel hesitated.

"Is this about Miss Cole?"

Claire remained silent.

That silence was answer enough.

A few minutes later, Claire opened the nursery closet.

From the top shelf she removed a worn brown stuffed rabbit.

One button eye was missing.

"I've had this since I was six."

Rachel blinked.

"You still kept it?"

Claire nodded.

"My brother won it for me at a carnival."

For a brief second...

Sadness crossed her face.

"I thought I'd lost both of them."

She looked down at Emma.

"I want her to have it."

Rachel laughed.

"You don't have to spoil her."

"I'm not."

Claire quietly stitched something into the rabbit's belly.

Her movements were careful.

Deliberate.

Rachel didn't notice.

Emma did.

The baby watched every stitch with curious eyes.

Claire whispered to her,

"One day..."

"...someone will ask you about Bunny."

Emma giggled.

Claire smiled.

"I hope you're too young to answer."

Later that evening...

Claire entered the hidden archive beneath the mansion.

Daniel Mercer waited beside the old desk.

"You called."

Claire handed him three sealed envelopes.

"If anything happens to me..."

Daniel interrupted.

"Nothing's going to happen."

Claire gave him a tired smile.

"You've started lying badly."

Daniel looked away.

She continued.

"The first envelope goes to Adrian."

"The second..."

"...to whoever finds the archive."

"And the third?"

Claire held the final envelope a little tighter.

"No one opens that one."

Daniel frowned.

"Then why make it?"

"In case I'm wrong."

He accepted the envelopes without another word.

As Claire turned to leave, Daniel spoke quietly.

"You could still disappear."

She stopped.

"I already considered it."

"You'd be alive."

Claire looked back over her shoulder.

"And Adrian would die."

Daniel didn't argue.

Because she was right.

At 8:43 p.m., Claire finally called Adrian.

He answered on the second ring.

"Hey."

His voice immediately softened.

"I'm almost home."

Claire closed her eyes.

"I know."

"I need to tell you something."

"What happened?"

She looked toward the hallway.

She had heard footsteps.

Very faint.

"I think..."

She hesitated.

"No."

"What?"

"I'll tell you when you get home."

"Claire."

She forced a smile he couldn't see.

"I love you."

A pause.

"I love you too."

The call ended.

Claire stared at the silent phone.

Then whispered to herself,

"I'm sorry."

At 9:02 p.m., Madison knocked.

She looked worried.

"Claire?"

Claire opened the door.

"Can we talk?"

"Of course."

Madison stepped inside.

Her smile lasted exactly three seconds.

Then it disappeared.

"You know."

Claire nodded.

"I do."

Neither woman pretended anymore.

Madison sighed.

"I hoped you wouldn't."

"So did I."

Silence.

Rain struck the windows harder.

Madison looked around the room.

"You hid it well."

Claire smiled.

"Not well enough."

Madison's expression became unreadable.

"It doesn't have to end badly."

Claire laughed softly.

"It already has."

Nine minutes later...

Claire left the mansion alone.

She carried no purse.

No suitcase.

Only her wedding ring.

And a small silver key.

She climbed into her Mercedes.

The rain blurred the windshield.

Before starting the engine, she opened the glove compartment.

Inside lay a folded photograph.

Adrian.

Claire.

A much younger Emma asleep in Claire's arms.

Claire touched the picture gently.

Then whispered,

"Protect her."

She started the car.

The headlights disappeared into the storm.

Exactly fifteen minutes later...

Daniel's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Only static.

Then...

Claire's voice.

Very weak.

"They found me."

The call ended.

Daniel raced toward his car.

He never reached her in time.

Back in the mansion...

A tiny one-year-old Emma wandered sleepily into the nursery.

She hugged Bunny tightly.

Outside...

Lightning flashed across the sky.

The room glowed white for a heartbeat.

Emma looked toward the doorway.

A woman stood there.

Smiling.

Blue sweater.

Rain-soaked hair.

Emma reached out happily.

The woman placed one finger gently against her lips.

"Shhh..."

Then she pointed toward Bunny.

"Keep him safe."

Another flash of lightning.

The doorway was empty.

Three years later...

Emma would remember only fragments.

A blue sweater.

A rabbit.

A music box.

A crying lady.

A closet.

Pieces too small for adults to understand.

But large enough...

To change everything.

Epilogue
