CHAPTER 2 Behind the Closet Wall

No one moved.

Emma's final words lingered in the room like smoke.

"She hid it somewhere else... because she knew Madison would come back."

The silence became unbearable.

Adrian's eyes remained fixed on the empty space inside the glass cabinet.

A perfect outline of dust.

The porcelain bluebird had been there for years.

Long enough to leave its ghost behind.

But now...

It was gone.

Natalie stepped closer, her voice barely above a whisper.

"It wasn't stolen recently."

Adrian looked at her.

She pointed toward the cabinet.

"Look at the dust."

Everyone leaned in.

The shelves were covered with a thin gray layer that had settled naturally over three years.

Except for the empty outline.

There were no fresh fingerprints.

No smudges.

Whoever had taken the bluebird had done it long ago.

Perhaps...

Only days after Claire's funeral.

Adrian slowly turned toward Madison.

"When was the last time you entered this room?"

Madison folded her arms.

"I told you. Never."

Natalie laughed bitterly.

"Then explain the missing bird."

"I can't explain something I know nothing about."

Rachel stood frozen near the doorway, wishing she could disappear.

Emma gently tugged at Adrian's sleeve.

"It wasn't there."

"When?"

"The night."

"What night?"

"The lady cried."

Rachel's face turned white.

"Emma..."

The little girl frowned.

"I told you."

Rachel whispered desperately,

"No, sweetheart. You dreamed that."

Emma looked confused.

"It wasn't a dream."

She hugged her rabbit tighter.

"The rabbit saw too."

Several guests exchanged uneasy glances.

Margaret sighed dramatically.

"This has become absurd."

She turned toward Adrian.

"Your emotions are making you irrational."

But Adrian wasn't listening anymore.

He had begun walking slowly around the dressing room.

Everything looked untouched.

Claire's perfume bottles still lined the vanity.

Her brushes remained arranged exactly as she'd left them.

Even her favorite silk robe still hung behind the door.

Three years.

No one had disturbed anything.

Or so he believed.

Until he reached the wardrobe.

A massive custom-built oak closet stretched across nearly the entire wall.

Claire had adored fashion.

The wardrobe had been designed specifically for her.

Six separate sections.

Hidden jewelry drawers.

Rotating shoe racks.

Handcrafted cedar lining.

Adrian rested his hand against the polished wood.

Something felt...

Wrong.

He couldn't explain it.

Only instinct.

He pressed lightly.

Nothing.

Then harder.

A dull sound echoed beneath the panel.

Not solid.

Hollow.

Natalie heard it too.

She walked beside him and knocked gently.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

The left side answered with dense wood.

The center answered with empty space.

Her eyes widened.

"Adrian."

He already understood.

"There shouldn't be a hollow section."

The old housekeeper nodded nervously.

"There wasn't."

Madison suddenly interrupted.

"It's just the construction."

Adrian looked toward her.

"You seem very certain."

"I've seen closets like this before."

"You just said you've never entered this room."

Madison opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Natalie caught it immediately.

"You've never been here..."

"...yet you know how this closet was built?"

Madison recovered quickly.

"I meant closets in general."

No one answered.

Adrian examined the wardrobe more carefully.

His fingers traced the carved edges.

Then...

He felt something.

One brass hook near the back wasn't aligned with the others.

It protruded by barely half an inch.

Almost invisible.

He grasped it.

Pulled gently.

Nothing happened.

He twisted instead.

Click.

A faint mechanical sound echoed inside the wall.

The entire wardrobe shifted forward by less than an inch.

Every person in the room gasped.

"A hidden compartment..." Natalie whispered.

Adrian pulled harder.

With a deep groan of old wood...

The center section slowly swung open.

Not into another closet.

Into darkness.

A narrow passage stretched behind the wardrobe.

Rachel instinctively stepped backward.

Emma smiled.

"I told you."

The air flowing from inside felt cold.

Stale.

As though it hadn't been disturbed for years.

Margaret looked horrified.

"Claire never mentioned this."

The housekeeper shook her head.

"None of us knew."

Adrian switched on his phone's flashlight.

The narrow beam cut through the darkness.

Dust floated lazily in the air.

Spiderwebs covered the corners.

But one thing immediately stood out.

Footprints.

Not old footprints.

Recent ones.

At least...

More recent than the dust around them.

Natalie crouched.

"Someone walked in here."

Adrian followed the trail.

The prints disappeared deeper into the hidden space.

He entered without hesitation.

"Adrian!"

Madison's voice cracked.

"You don't know what's in there."

He stopped.

Turned slowly.

"No."

His eyes locked onto hers.

"But it sounds like you might."

Madison's lips parted.

Again...

No answer.

The narrow corridor ended only ten feet later.

It wasn't another room.

It was a tiny storage chamber.

Barely large enough for two people.

Old boxes lined one wall.

A broken chair.

Several forgotten paintings.

Nothing unusual.

Until Adrian's flashlight landed on a wooden chest.

His breath caught.

He recognized it instantly.

Claire's memory chest.

She kept letters there.

Birthday cards.

Travel souvenirs.

Their honeymoon photographs.

Things too sentimental for anyone else.

He knelt.

The brass latch was unlocked.

Someone had opened it before.

Recently.

Very recently.

The dust around the lid had been disturbed.

Adrian lifted it carefully.

Inside...

The photographs remained.

Letters.

Jewelry.

A silk scarf.

Everything appeared untouched.

Then Natalie noticed something.

"There are gaps."

"What?"

She pointed inside.

"See these spaces?"

Rectangular impressions remained in the velvet lining.

Something had once rested there.

Several somethings.

Now missing.

Adrian searched carefully.

At the bottom lay only one object.

A folded piece of paper.

Yellowed with age.

His pulse quickened.

He unfolded it.

The handwriting belonged to Claire.

Without question.

It wasn't a letter.

It was a list.

At the top she had written only three words.

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS

Below it...

Five names.

One of them had already been crossed out.

Another was circled.

The circled name read:

Madison Cole.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Natalie's knees nearly gave way.

Margaret stared in disbelief.

Madison didn't move.

Her face became completely expressionless.

Adrian slowly looked up.

"When did Claire write this?"

Nobody answered.

Then Emma quietly walked into the hidden room.

She pointed toward the chest.

"There's another one."

Adrian frowned.

"What do you mean?"

She touched the wooden bottom.

"Underneath."

He removed everything from the chest.

Ran his fingers across the velvet lining.

Nothing.

Then he pressed near one corner.

Click.

A false bottom sprang open.

Hidden beneath it...

Lay a small black USB drive.

And beside it...

A sealed white envelope.

Across the front, written in Claire's unmistakable handwriting, were six words that made Adrian's blood run cold.

Only open if I die.

Madison suddenly lunged forward.

"Don't touch it!"

The entire room froze.

She realized what she'd done only after the words left her mouth.

Too late.

Adrian slowly picked up the envelope.

Never taking his eyes off her.

His voice was colder than anyone had ever heard.

"Tell me something, Madison."

"How..."

May you like

"...did you know it was here?"
