CHAPTER 7 The Fingerprint That Didn't Belong

No one spoke.
Claire's final words hung in the underground archive room like a sentence that refused to end.
"...one of the people standing beside you... helped them kill me."
Adrian slowly turned.
Natalie stood to his left, her injured shoulder soaked through with blood.
Rachel held Emma tightly, her face pale with fear.
The old housekeeper, Mrs. Eleanor Hayes, clutched the edge of a shelf to steady herself.
Emma alone seemed strangely calm.
She wasn't looking at Adrian.
She was staring at the old tape recorder.
As though she expected it to speak again.
Adrian walked to the machine.
It was an antique cassette recorder, covered in dust.
Except...
One corner wasn't dusty.
Someone had touched it recently.
Very recently.
He crouched beside the desk.
"There."
Natalie followed his gaze.
A faint fingerprint marked the polished wood.
Visible only because of the dust surrounding it.
Rachel frowned.
"It can't be Claire's."
"No."
Adrian shook his head.
"The dust settled over years."
He carefully removed a clean handkerchief from his pocket and examined the print without touching it.
Whoever had activated the recorder before tonight...
Had done so after Claire died.
Someone else knew about this room.
Emma wandered toward another shelf.
Rachel immediately reached for her.
"Emma, don't touch anything."
The little girl pointed instead.
"The bird."
Adrian looked up.
There was no porcelain bird.
Only a thick black binder resting alone on the highest shelf.
Its spine carried a single bluebird emblem embossed in silver.
Adrian climbed a small wooden ladder and lifted it down.
It was heavier than expected.
Inside were plastic sleeves filled with photographs.
Hundreds of them.
All secretly taken.
Madison entering office buildings.
Madison meeting unknown men.
Madison exchanging envelopes.
Madison visiting a lakeside warehouse at midnight.
Claire had documented everything.
Then Adrian reached the final section.
His pulse slowed.
These weren't photographs of Madison.
They were photographs of him.
Walking into Westwood Holdings.
Leaving restaurants.
Meeting investors.
Even entering his own home.
Someone had been watching him too.
One photograph made his stomach tighten.
It showed Adrian standing outside a hospital three years earlier.
Across the street...
Almost hidden behind a newspaper...
Sat the same gray-haired man Claire had circled.
Watching him.
Always watching.
Natalie flipped through another folder.
"Adrian."
He looked over.
She held up a receipt.
Not a financial document.
A laboratory invoice.
Forensic DNA Analysis.
Date:
Nine days before Claire died.
Rachel frowned.
"Claire ordered DNA testing?"
Adrian took the document.
The receipt listed two samples.
Sample A.
Sample B.
The result page was missing.
Only the invoice remained.
"What was she testing?" Rachel whispered.
Nobody knew.
Emma suddenly covered her ears.
"Too loud."
Rachel knelt beside her.
"What is?"
"The buzzing."
Everyone listened.
Nothing.
Then Adrian heard it too.
A faint electrical hum.
Coming from behind the far wall.
He followed the sound.
One shelf seemed different from the others.
Newer.
Less dust.
He pushed gently.
It didn't move.
Natalie examined the base.
"There are wheels."
Together they shoved harder.
The shelf rolled sideways.
Hidden behind it...
Was a steel security door.
Unlike the old iron entrance.
This one looked modern.
Electronic.
A biometric fingerprint scanner glowed faintly beside the handle.
Rachel stared.
"This room was updated."
Adrian nodded slowly.
"After the house was built."
He pressed the scanner.
A red light flashed.
ACCESS DENIED.
Natalie tried.
Denied.
Rachel.
Denied.
Even Mrs. Hayes.
Denied.
Emma reached toward it.
Rachel caught her hand.
"No."
"It's okay," Emma whispered.
She gently touched the scanner.
The machine beeped.
Green.
ACCESS ACCEPTED.
Every adult froze.
The heavy steel lock disengaged with a deep metallic thunk.
Rachel stumbled backward.
"How..."
Emma looked just as confused as everyone else.
"I didn't do anything."
The door slowly swung inward.
Beyond it lay a spotless room.
No dust.
No cobwebs.
Someone had maintained it.
Recently.
Computer monitors lined one wall.
Most were dark.
A server rack blinked quietly in the corner.
Several filing cabinets stood locked.
In the center sat a single desk.
On it rested a framed photograph.
Claire.
Holding baby Emma.
Rachel gasped so sharply she nearly dropped her daughter.
"No..."
Her knees buckled.
Natalie caught her.
Rachel stared at the photograph.
"I've never seen this."
Adrian picked it up.
There was no doubt.
Claire was smiling.
Cradling Emma in her arms.
The photo had been taken in this very mansion.
Nearly four years ago.
Emma was only a few months old.
Rachel whispered,
"That's impossible."
Adrian slowly looked at her.
"You told us Emma had never been here."
Rachel's lips trembled.
"I..."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I don't remember."
Silence.
Adrian frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Rachel buried her face in her hands.
"I worked here."
Everyone stared.
"For six months."
The room seemed to tilt beneath Adrian's feet.
"I was Claire's temporary maid..."
"...before Emma turned one."
Natalie blinked.
"Why didn't you tell us?"
Rachel shook her head desperately.
"Because I honestly forgot."
"Forgot?"
"I had an accident."
She struggled to breathe.
"A drunk driver hit my car."
"I was in a coma for twelve days."
"When I woke up..."
"...I couldn't remember almost an entire year."
Adrian stared at the photograph again.
Claire.
Emma.
Rachel.
Their lives had crossed long before tonight.
Rachel whispered through tears,
"I thought I'd never met Mrs. Westwood."
Emma quietly touched the picture.
"The pretty lady gave me Bunny."
She lifted her worn stuffed rabbit.
Rachel's face turned white.
"What?"
Emma smiled.
"She said he'd keep me safe."
Rachel slowly took the rabbit from her daughter.
She turned it over.
For the first time in years...
She noticed something stitched inside one torn ear.
Tiny blue thread.
Almost invisible.
She carefully opened the seam.
A rolled piece of paper slid into her trembling hand.
Adrian unfolded it.
It wasn't a letter.
It was a photograph.
Taken from inside a parking garage.
Madison stood beside the gray-haired man.
Between them...
Was Rachel.
Unconscious.
Being loaded into a black van.
On the back, in Claire's handwriting, were seven chilling words:
Rachel remembered something they couldn't allow.
Adrian slowly raised his eyes.
If Claire was right...
Rachel hadn't lost her memory by accident.
May you like
Someone had taken it from her.
