CHAPTER 11 The Man in the Wedding Photograph

00:56

The countdown continued to tick across every monitor.

No one took their eyes off the unmasked man.

A jagged scar ran from his right temple to the corner of his jaw.

Adrian's mind raced.

He knew that face.

Not from business.

Not from the news.

From a forgotten corner of his past.

Natalie spoke first.

"I remember him."

Adrian turned.

"He was one of the security guards at your wedding."

Rachel looked between them.

"A security guard?"

Natalie nodded slowly.

"Claire insisted on hiring a private security team instead of using Westwood's staff."

"I thought she was being overly cautious."

The man on the monitor smiled faintly.

"It took you long enough."

His voice matched the one from the hidden room.

Calm.

Controlled.

Without a hint of panic.

"You've aged well, Mr. Westwood."

Adrian stepped closer to the screen.

"Who are you?"

The man answered without hesitation.

"My name is Daniel Mercer."

"I was hired to protect Claire."

A stunned silence filled the room.

Rachel frowned.

"If you were protecting her..."

"...why did you attack us?"

Daniel lowered his eyes for a moment.

"Because I needed to know whether you found the journal before they did."

Natalie narrowed her gaze.

"You stabbed me."

"I aimed for Adrian."

Daniel replied flatly.

"You moved."

The room fell silent again.

He wasn't apologizing.

He was stating a fact.

Adrian's voice hardened.

"Start talking."

Daniel glanced toward the countdown.

00:41

"We don't have much time."

He pressed a button somewhere off-camera.

The countdown disappeared.

The armed men shown on the other monitors stopped moving.

Almost as if they'd received new orders.

"I bought us ten minutes."

Adrian didn't relax.

"Who are they?"

Daniel answered with a single word.

"Blackridge."

Rachel whispered,

"The consulting company?"

Daniel shook his head.

"That's only the name on the front door."

"They're an intelligence network."

"They sell information."

"They erase evidence."

"They create accidents."

"And when necessary..."

"They create entirely new lives."

Adrian remembered Claire's recording.

"They erase people."

He finally understood.

Daniel continued.

"They don't just kill witnesses."

"They rewrite history."

Rachel's breathing quickened.

"My memory..."

Daniel looked directly at her.

"They took it."

"Why?"

"Because you saw something."

"What?"

"You've forgotten."

Rachel laughed bitterly.

"That's the problem."

Daniel's expression softened.

"No."

"They couldn't erase everything."

He looked at Emma.

"They missed one witness."

Everyone slowly turned toward the little girl.

Emma hugged Bunny tightly.

"I told you."

Rachel whispered,

"What does she remember?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"Not memories."

"Patterns."

"Children remember differently."

"They remember emotions."

"Voices."

"Places."

"Smells."

"They're harder to manipulate."

Adrian felt a chill.

That explained Emma's impossible knowledge.

She hadn't been speaking to ghosts.

Fragments of early childhood had survived where adult memories had failed.

Daniel reached into view.

He placed a thick file on the desk before the camera.

"Claire figured that out."

"That's why she stayed close to Emma."

"She believed Emma would become the only witness Blackridge couldn't erase."

Rachel burst into tears.

All this time...

She had thought her daughter was imagining things.

Instead...

Emma had been remembering.

Not perfectly.

But truthfully.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

"Why didn't you come to me three years ago?"

Daniel laughed once.

Without humor.

"I tried."

He rolled up his sleeve.

A faded bullet scar crossed his forearm.

"The night Claire died..."

"I was shot twice."

"They left me for dead."

"I disappeared because disappearing was the only way to stay alive."

Natalie folded her arms.

"And now?"

"Now they're desperate."

"Because you found the archive."

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

"There are three copies of Claire's evidence."

"You've found two."

Adrian frowned.

"The journal..."

"The microSD..."

Daniel nodded.

"The third copy is the only one that can destroy Blackridge."

"Where is it?"

Daniel looked straight into Adrian's eyes.

"I don't know."

The room fell silent.

"You don't know?"

"No."

"Claire never told anyone."

"Not even me."

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"So we've risked everything..."

"...and we're still missing the most important piece."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Before Adrian could ask another question...

Emma quietly walked toward one of the walls.

She touched the faded wallpaper.

Then smiled.

"It's singing."

Rachel wiped away her tears.

"What is?"

"The wall."

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

"Emma."

"Step away."

She didn't.

Instead...

She pressed both hands against the wallpaper.

A faint melody echoed through the room.

Not electronic.

Mechanical.

A music box.

The same tune Adrian hadn't heard in years.

Clair de Lune.

Claire's favorite music box.

The one Emma had mentioned at the engagement party.

Adrian's pulse quickened.

"It wasn't upstairs..."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

"The pretty lady moved it."

The melody grew louder.

Then...

A section of wallpaper slowly peeled away from the wall.

Behind it was a small steel safe.

Daniel stared at the monitor in disbelief.

"No..."

"I searched that room three times."

Emma looked over her shoulder.

"She said grown-ups never listen."

Adrian stepped toward the safe.

There was no keypad.

No keyhole.

Only a single circular indentation.

Exactly the size of the bluebird cufflink Daniel had dropped during the fight.

Adrian reached into his pocket.

The silver cufflink.

The bluebird emblem fit perfectly into the indentation.

He pressed it inward.

CLICK.

The safe unlocked.

Inside...

There wasn't a stack of documents.

There wasn't cash.

There wasn't another drive.

Only one sealed envelope.

Across the front, in Claire's handwriting, were eight words:

Read this only after you doubt yourself.

Adrian carefully picked it up.

It felt unusually light.

Almost empty.

He broke the seal.

A single folded page slipped into his hand.

He unfolded it.

His face drained of color.

Natalie saw the change immediately.

"Adrian?"

He didn't answer.

Rachel stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Very slowly...

Adrian lowered the letter.

His voice was barely audible.

"Claire says..."

He looked first at Emma.

Then at Rachel.

Finally at Daniel's face on the monitor.

"...I've been asking the wrong question for three years."

Silence.

He swallowed hard.

"The question isn't..."

"'Who killed Claire?'"

His hands trembled.

"It's..."

"'Who was Claire really hiding from?'"

At that exact moment, every monitor went black.

Daniel's image disappeared.

A single line of white text appeared instead:

Connection terminated. Source compromised.

Then, from somewhere above the hidden room...

Came the unmistakable sound of an explosion.

May you like

The entire mansion shook.
