CHAPTER 6 The Clock That Waited Three Years

CLICK.

The sound was soft.

Almost delicate.

Yet every person in the room heard it.

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

The old grandfather clock stood at the far end of the second-floor landing, its polished mahogany frame gleaming whenever lightning flashed through the windows.

It hadn't worked since Claire's funeral.

At least...

Everyone believed it hadn't.

The hands had been frozen at 9:17 p.m.

The exact time police estimated Claire's Mercedes plunged through the guardrail.

Natalie frowned.

"It shouldn't be chiming."

"It never has," the old housekeeper whispered.

Emma tugged gently on Adrian's sleeve.

"She's opening the door."

Adrian looked down.

"What door?"

Emma pointed toward the clock.

"That one."

Despite the pain in her shoulder, Natalie insisted on following.

Rachel remained behind with Emma while another servant wrapped a towel tightly around Natalie's wound.

"We should call an ambulance," Rachel pleaded.

Natalie shook her head.

"Later."

Adrian didn't argue.

Whoever had broken into the mansion hadn't come for money.

They had come for Claire's journal.

And now...

The grandfather clock had awakened after three years of silence.

Nothing about tonight was a coincidence.

The clock stood over eight feet tall.

An antique imported from Germany more than a century ago.

Claire loved it because it reminded her of her grandfather's estate.

Adrian had never paid much attention to it.

Now he noticed something strange.

The pendulum was moving.

Back and forth.

Steadily.

Impossible.

There was no winding key.

No power.

Nothing that should have made it run.

Natalie whispered,

"It stopped the night Claire died."

Adrian slowly opened the glass door protecting the pendulum.

Inside...

Everything appeared normal.

Brass weights.

Wooden gears.

The polished pendulum.

Then he saw it.

A tiny brass lever hidden behind one of the weights.

It hadn't been visible unless the clock door was fully open.

He reached inside.

"Careful," Natalie warned.

He pulled the lever.

Nothing happened.

He pushed instead.

CLACK.

A deeper mechanical sound echoed somewhere inside the wall.

The entire clock shifted forward by an inch.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

"It's another hidden compartment," Natalie breathed.

Adrian grasped both sides of the cabinet.

With a hard pull...

The entire clock swung outward like a door.

Behind it...

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Cold air drifted upward.

Old.

Stale.

Rachel, who had just arrived carrying Emma despite Adrian's instructions to stay downstairs, froze at the sight.

"There's... a basement?"

The old housekeeper looked horrified.

"There isn't."

Adrian glanced at her.

"You built this house."

"My husband supervised the renovations twenty years ago."

She shook her head repeatedly.

"There was never a staircase."

Emma whispered,

"Yes, there was."

Everyone looked at her.

"The pretty lady showed me."

Rachel's hands trembled.

"Emma, please..."

But Emma wasn't listening.

She stared into the darkness.

"She said..."

"...don't let him go alone."

Adrian switched on his flashlight.

The beam revealed stone steps disappearing beneath the mansion.

The walls were rough.

Older than the house above.

Much older.

As though the mansion had been built on top of something.

One by one, they descended.

Every footstep echoed.

The air smelled of damp earth and cedar.

At the bottom stood a heavy iron door.

Locked.

Adrian reached into his pocket.

The tiny silver key Claire had hidden inside the envelope.

His pulse quickened.

"It can't be..."

He inserted the key.

It fit perfectly.

One slow turn.

Click.

The iron door creaked open.

Inside waited a room no larger than a library.

Shelves lined every wall.

Not with books.

With boxes.

Dozens of identical gray archive boxes.

Each labeled by year.

Claire had organized them meticulously.

Natalie stared in disbelief.

"What is all this?"

Adrian walked to the nearest shelf.

Each box contained documents.

Contracts.

Financial statements.

Photographs.

USB drives.

Newspaper clippings.

Every single file concerned the same company.

Blackridge Consulting.

Rachel frowned.

"I've never heard of them."

Neither had Adrian.

Yet Claire had spent years collecting evidence.

Not weeks.

Years.

Then he noticed another shelf.

Unlike the others...

It held framed photographs.

Family pictures.

Wedding pictures.

Birthday celebrations.

Business galas.

Normal memories.

Until he looked closer.

Red circles had been drawn around certain faces.

One photograph from a charity dinner caught his attention.

Claire and Adrian stood smiling beside several executives.

One man had been circled.

The same gray-haired man appeared again.

And again.

And again.

Different years.

Different events.

Always nearby.

Always watching.

On the back of the frame, Claire had written:

He never attends by accident.

Natalie looked over Adrian's shoulder.

"I've seen him before."

"Who is he?"

"I don't know his name."

She frowned.

"But he was at Claire's funeral."

Rachel gasped.

"So was Madison."

Another photograph.

Another red circle.

This time...

Around Madison.

Standing only a few feet away from the gray-haired man.

Talking.

Laughing.

Claire had drawn an arrow between them.

Beneath it she had written:

She lied. They already knew each other.

Adrian's chest tightened.

Madison had always insisted she'd met the man for the first time at a charity auction.

Claire believed otherwise.

Then Emma wandered toward the far wall.

"Over here."

Rachel hurried after her.

"What is it?"

Emma pointed upward.

"There."

Mounted alone above every shelf...

Hung a large map of Chicago.

Hundreds of colored pins covered it.

Blue.

Black.

Red.

Thin strings connected dozens of locations.

Adrian stepped closer.

Each pin marked a place connected to Blackridge.

Corporate offices.

Warehouses.

Hotels.

Private clubs.

One red pin sat far outside the city.

Near the lake.

Exactly where Claire's car had crashed.

Natalie slowly traced the string connected to it.

It led...

Not to Madison.

Not to Blackridge.

But to another location.

A cemetery.

Claire's cemetery.

Rachel whispered,

"Why would those places be connected?"

Before anyone could answer...

A loud buzzing filled the room.

Everyone jumped.

One of the old landline telephones sitting on a dusty desk had begun ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Adrian stared.

"There shouldn't be power down here."

The phone kept ringing.

Natalie looked uneasy.

"Don't answer it."

The ringing stopped.

Silence returned.

Then...

The answering machine beside the phone clicked on by itself.

A recorded voice filled the underground room.

It was Claire.

Calm.

Steady.

Very much alive.

"If you're hearing this..."

Adrian stopped breathing.

"...then they found me before I finished."

The tape hissed softly.

Claire continued.

"Adrian... if you're not alone..."

"...look very carefully."

"...because one of the people standing beside you..."

The recording crackled violently.

Static swallowed the rest of the sentence.

Then the tape resumed for one final chilling line.

"...helped them kill me."

The machine clicked off.

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

Five people had entered the hidden room.

Adrian.

Natalie.

Rachel.

Emma.

The old housekeeper.

According to Claire...

May you like

One of them had helped murder her.
