Chapter 5: The Betrayal Hidden in Plain Sight

The mansion had never been silent before.
Not truly.
There was always something.
The footsteps of guards moving through the halls.
The sound of servants preparing meals.
The quiet conversations of people who knew their lives depended on staying useful to Alejandro Moretti.
But tonight...
The Moretti mansion felt like a tomb.
Because the man who had protected it for fifteen years had become the person everyone feared.
Marco DeLuca.
The loyal friend.
The trusted right hand.
The brother Alejandro never had.
The traitor standing in the shadows.
Alejandro stood in the center of the hallway, staring at the security footage.
The image was grainy.
Black and white.
But there was no mistake.
The person entering the security room was Marco.
Not an enemy.
Not an outsider.
Him.
The same man who knew every camera location.
Every guard schedule.
Every weakness in the mansion.
Emma watched Alejandro carefully.
For the first time since she met him, she saw something terrifying.
Not rage.
Not violence.
Pain.
A man realizing his entire world might have been built on a lie.
“Do you believe it?” Emma asked quietly.
Alejandro didn’t answer.
“You saw the footage.”
Still nothing.
“Then why are you defending him?”
Alejandro finally looked at her.
“Because Marco has saved my life more times than anyone.”
Emma lowered her voice.
“Or maybe he was the one putting your life in danger.”
Those words hit harder than she expected.
Alejandro looked away.
Because somewhere deep inside...
He had already considered that possibility.
Fifteen years earlier.
Alejandro was not the man he was today.
He was younger.
More reckless.
More emotional.
He believed loyalty was something earned through friendship.
Not fear.
That was when he met Marco.
A young man with nothing.
No family.
No money.
No future.
Alejandro found him injured after a street conflict.
Everyone else walked away.
Alejandro stopped.
He saved him.
And Marco never forgot.
At least...
That was what Alejandro believed.
Marco became his closest ally.
The only person Alejandro trusted with everything.
His business.
His enemies.
His secrets.
Even Isabella.
Especially Isabella.
And that was why the betrayal felt impossible.
Because Marco wasn’t just an employee.
He was family.
“Find him.”
Alejandro’s voice cut through the hallway.
The guards immediately moved.
But before they left, Alejandro added:
“Alive.”
Everyone looked surprised.
Usually, anyone who attacked Alejandro Moretti disappeared.
But this time was different.
He needed answers.
Not revenge.
Not yet.
Meanwhile, Marco DeLuca walked through an underground tunnel beneath the city.
The same tunnels used by criminals, politicians, and powerful families who wanted to hide their darkest secrets.
His phone rang.
He answered.
“Is it done?”
A woman’s voice responded.
“No.”
Marco stopped.
“What do you mean?”
“She is inside the mansion.”
Silence.
Then Marco smiled.
A cold smile.
“So Isabella’s plan worked.”
The woman hesitated.
“You sound happy.”
“I’m not happy.”
Marco looked at the dark tunnel ahead.
“I’m impressed.”
“Impressed?”
“Isabella always knew Alejandro better than anyone.”
A pause.
“She knew he would search for someone who looked like her.”
The woman’s voice became nervous.
“But Emma remembers.”
Marco’s expression changed.
“That is a problem.”
“What will you do?”
Marco looked at a photograph in his hand.
A photograph of a little girl.
The same girl from the old picture.
Emma.
“We finish what Isabella started.”
Back at the mansion, Emma was struggling.
Memories kept appearing.
Not complete memories.
Fragments.
A hallway.
A woman crying.
A locked door.
A man's voice.
And always the same phrase.
"Forget everything."
She covered her ears.
Alejandro noticed.
“What’s wrong?”
Emma looked at him.
“I think something was done to me.”
“What?”
“My memories.”
Alejandro became serious.
“Explain.”
“I keep remembering things that shouldn’t exist.”
She looked at the necklace in her hand.
“I knew Isabella before today.”
Alejandro stared at her.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Try.”
Emma closed her eyes.
And suddenly...
A memory appeared.
A young Isabella sitting beside her.
Not as a stranger.
As someone who loved her.
“You have to be brave, Emma.”
The little girl was crying.
“Why can’t I stay with you?”
Isabella held her hand.
“Because they will use you to destroy him.”
“Who?”
Isabella looked afraid.
“The people who control everything.”
The memory disappeared.
Emma opened her eyes.
Breathing heavily.
Alejandro was watching her.
“What did you see?”
Emma whispered:
“I was with Isabella.”
Alejandro stepped back.
Impossible.
Yet everything impossible had become reality.
“Who am I?”
Emma asked.
Her voice cracked.
“Why does everyone know me except me?”
Alejandro had no answer.
And that terrified him.
Because Alejandro Moretti always had answers.
Hours later, Marco finally contacted them.
Not directly.
Through a video message.
The mansion screens suddenly turned on.
Everyone froze.
Marco appeared.
Calm.
Relaxed.
Almost like he was sitting in his own office.
“Hello, Alejandro.”
Every guard raised their weapons toward the screen.
Alejandro stepped forward.
“Where are you?”
Marco smiled.
“Still asking the wrong questions.”
Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.
“Why did you betray me?”
Marco laughed softly.
“Betray you?”
He shook his head.
“No, Alejandro.”
“I saved you.”
The room became silent.
Marco continued:
“For fifteen years, I protected you from the truth.”
Alejandro’s expression darkened.
“What truth?”
Marco leaned closer to the camera.
“The truth about Isabella.”
A pause.
“The truth about Emma.”
Another pause.
“And the truth about the night your wife disappeared.”
Alejandro clenched his fist.
“Tell me.”
Marco smiled.
“Do you really want to know?”
“Yes.”
“Then ask yourself one question first.”
The screen flickered.
Marco’s voice became colder.
“Why did Isabella disappear without saying goodbye?”
Alejandro remained silent.
Then Marco delivered the words that changed everything.
“Because she wasn’t running away from you.”
“She was running away from what you had become.”
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then a guard suddenly shouted:
“Boss!”
Everyone turned.
A body had been found outside the mansion gates.
A man wearing a security uniform.
Dead.
But in his hand was something.
A small piece of paper.
Alejandro picked it up.
Only one sentence was written.
"If you want Isabella back, come alone."
Below the message was a location.
A place Alejandro knew too well.
The abandoned warehouse from the photograph.
The place where Isabella was last seen alive.
Alejandro looked at Emma.
“You stay here.”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
“This is dangerous.”
“So is staying here while everyone lies to me.”
Alejandro stared at her.
For a moment, he saw Isabella.
Not her face.
Her courage.
Her refusal to run.
Finally, he nodded.
“Then you come with me.”
But neither of them knew...
The warehouse was not a trap designed to kill Alejandro.
It was a trap designed to reveal the truth.
A truth that would destroy the one thing Alejandro still believed.
May you like
That he was the victim.
To be continued...
