Chapter 13: The Last Betrayal

The door opened slowly.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for everyone inside the safe house to understand one terrifying truth.

Someone had been there all along.

Someone had listened.

Someone had followed them.

Alejandro raised his weapon immediately.

Marco moved in front of Isabella.

Emma stepped backward.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes silence revealed more than words.

Then the person stepped into the light.

And Alejandro’s eyes widened.

“Impossible…”

The person standing there was not Lorenzo.

Not one of The Vipers.

Not a stranger.

It was someone Alejandro had known for years.

Someone who had worked beside him.

Someone who had helped him survive countless battles.

Someone who had never once made him suspicious.

Maria.

The old servant from the Moretti mansion.

The woman who had raised Alejandro after his mother died.

The woman who cried when Isabella disappeared.

The woman who claimed to protect Isabella’s final message.

The woman everyone trusted.

Emma stared.

“Maria?”

The old woman looked at her sadly.

“I’m sorry.”

Alejandro’s voice became cold.

“Explain.”

Maria closed the door behind her.

The sound echoed through the room.

“I never wanted it to end this way.”

Marco laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Everyone looked at him.

Marco stared at Maria.

“After all these years, I should have known.”

Alejandro looked at him.

“You knew?”

Marco shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“But I suspected.”

Alejandro’s eyes never left Maria.

“Were you working for Lorenzo?”

Maria looked down.

“Yes.”

The answer was quiet.

But it destroyed the room.

Isabella looked devastated.

“No…”

Maria looked at her.

“I loved you like a daughter.”

“Then why?”

Maria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because sometimes loving someone means making impossible choices.”

Alejandro stepped closer.

“Don’t use that excuse.”

His voice was dangerous.

“You betrayed everyone.”

Maria accepted the accusation.

“Yes.”

Maria revealed the truth.

She had not been Lorenzo’s spy from the beginning.

At first, she was simply the Moretti family servant.

She watched Alejandro grow.

She watched him become powerful.

She watched him fall in love with Isabella.

And she believed Isabella could change him.

But then she discovered the truth.

Lorenzo had something over her.

A secret.

A threat.

Something that forced her to obey.

“What secret?” Alejandro asked.

Maria looked at Emma.

“Her mother.”

Emma froze.

“My mother?”

Maria nodded.

“Your mother was not killed by Lorenzo.”

The room became silent.

“What?”

Maria continued:

“She was hidden.”

Emma stared.

“Why?”

“Because she knew the truth about Lorenzo.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“You mean…”

“Yes.”

Maria looked at Alejandro.

“She was the first person who discovered what Lorenzo was building.”

A memory returned to Emma.

A woman.

A voice.

A promise.

“One day, they will tell you I abandoned you.”

“Don’t believe them.”

Emma covered her mouth.

“My mother…”

Maria nodded.

“She spent years trying to find a way to expose The Vipers.”

“Where is she?”

Nobody answered.

Emma understood before anyone spoke.

Her expression broke.

“She’s dead.”

Maria looked away.

“Yes.”

Alejandro looked at Maria.

“Why bring us here?”

Maria hesitated.

Then she pulled something from her pocket.

A small key.

“This is the last thing Isabella needs.”

Isabella stared.

“What is it?”

Maria handed it to her.

“Something Lorenzo never found.”

The key was old.

Worn.

But there was something engraved on it.

A symbol.

Not The Vipers.

Something else.

A symbol Alejandro had never seen.

“What does it open?” he asked.

Maria looked at him.

“The truth.”

Before anyone could ask more...

The safe house exploded.

The entire building shook.

Glass shattered.

Everyone fell.

Smoke filled the room.

Alejandro immediately grabbed Emma and pulled her away.

Marco dragged Isabella behind cover.

Maria disappeared into the smoke.

“Maria!”

Nobody answered.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

Lorenzo.

“You always were predictable, Alejandro.”

Alejandro looked around.

“You’re here.”

“No.”

A pause.

“But someone who works for me is.”

The speakers continued.

“You spent your entire life searching for enemies outside.”

A laugh.

“You never noticed the enemy was inside your family.”

The screen turned on.

A video appeared.

A young Alejandro.

Young Isabella.

Young Emma.

And another person.

A person standing beside them.

Someone nobody expected.

Alejandro’s mother.

Everyone froze.

Because Alejandro’s mother had died when he was young.

But the video showed her alive.

And she was speaking to Lorenzo.

“You promised me you would protect them.”

Lorenzo answered:

“I protected the family.”

She shook her head.

“You destroyed it.”

The video ended.

Emma looked at Alejandro.

“Your mother knew.”

Alejandro couldn’t answer.

His entire family history was collapsing.

Father alive.

Mother’s death a lie.

Sister hidden.

Wife disappeared.

Friend betrayed.

Servant manipulated.

Nothing was real.

Then Maria emerged from the smoke.

But she was different.

She wasn’t afraid anymore.

She held a gun.

Pointed at Alejandro.

Everyone froze.

“Maria…”

Alejandro looked hurt.

More than angry.

Because somehow...

This betrayal hurt the most.

Maria’s hand trembled.

“I’m sorry.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“Don’t do this.”

Maria looked at her.

“I have no choice.”

Alejandro stared.

“Everyone says that.”

A pause.

“But everyone chooses.”

Maria closed her eyes.

A tear fell.

Then she whispered:

“Your mother chose too.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

Maria lowered the gun slightly.

“Your mother didn’t die because of Lorenzo.”

Silence.

“She died because she tried to save you.”

Alejandro’s expression changed.

“From who?”

Maria looked directly at him.

“From yourself.”

Before Alejandro could understand...

A shot rang out.

But Maria wasn’t the one who fired.

A bullet entered through the window.

Maria collapsed.

Everyone rushed toward her.

Alejandro caught her before she hit the ground.

Her final words were barely audible.

“Find the room…”

“What room?”

“The room where it started…”

She grabbed his hand.

“The room where Alejandro Moretti was created.”

Her eyes closed.

Then she whispered one final name.

A name that made Isabella’s face lose all color.

“Doctor Laurent.”

Alejandro looked toward Victor.

The doctor who had been standing silently behind them.

Everyone turned.

Victor smiled.

Not the tired smile of a broken man.

The smile of someone who had been waiting.

“You finally understand.”

Alejandro raised his weapon.

“Understand what?”

Victor looked at him.

“That Lorenzo was never the mastermind.”

A pause.

“I wasn’t working for him.”

Silence.

Victor stepped forward.

“I was working for the person who controlled Lorenzo.”

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Victor smiled.

“The person who created you.”

The lights went out.

And in the darkness...

A voice whispered:

“Hello, Alejandro.”

A voice he had not heard in fifteen years.

May you like

His own voice.

To be continued...
