Chapter 11: The Man Who Pulled The Trigger

For fifteen years, Alejandro Moretti lived with a shadow he could never explain.

A feeling.

A wound without a memory.

Every time he looked at Isabella’s empty side of the bed, something inside him whispered:

You did this.

Every time someone accused him of making his wife disappear, he felt anger.

But beneath the anger...

There was doubt.

A small, terrifying doubt.

Because a part of him feared they were right.

Now he finally understood why.

Someone had planted that doubt inside him.

Someone had taken pieces of his past and rearranged them into a nightmare.

But one question remained.

Who pulled the trigger that night?

Lorenzo Moretti stood in the middle of the mansion as if he had never left.

As if fifteen years had only been a short vacation.

Alejandro hated that.

The calmness.

The confidence.

The way his father acted like he still owned everything.

“You know where Isabella is.”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Take me there.”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Do you think I’m asking?”

Lorenzo smiled.

“There he is.”

“What?”

“The old Alejandro.”

A pause.

“The one who believed fear solved every problem.”

Alejandro stepped closer.

“You erased my memories.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my life.”

“Yes.”

“You expect me to forgive you?”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“No.”

For the first time, his expression became serious.

“I expect you to understand.”

That was the thing Alejandro hated most about his father.

Lorenzo never apologized.

He explained.

As if every terrible thing he did was necessary.

As if every betrayal was a sacrifice.

As if every person he destroyed was simply a piece on a chessboard.

“You always wanted to save people,” Lorenzo said.

Alejandro laughed.

“And you always wanted to control them.”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo didn’t deny it.

“Because control keeps people alive.”

“No.”

Alejandro looked at him coldly.

“Control keeps monsters powerful.”

For a moment...

Lorenzo looked almost disappointed.

Because his son had finally become someone who could challenge him.

Meanwhile, Emma sat alone in Isabella’s room.

Her entire life had collapsed in a single day.

She was not Emma Valdez.

She was Emma Moretti.

She was not an orphan.

She had a family.

She was not forgotten.

She was hidden.

But the worst part...

She had spent years believing she was nobody.

When the truth was that everyone had been fighting over her existence.

A knock came.

She turned.

Maria entered.

The old servant looked at her sadly.

“You remember more now?”

Emma shook her head.

“Only pieces.”

Maria sat beside her.

“Sometimes memories return like broken glass.”

Emma looked down.

“And sometimes they cut.”

Maria nodded.

“Isabella knew this would happen.”

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at her.

“Why did she trust me?”

Maria smiled sadly.

“Because Isabella believed you were stronger than everyone thought.”

Emma looked confused.

“But I don’t even know who I am.”

Maria answered softly:

“That is exactly why you are dangerous.”

At the same time, Alejandro discovered something hidden in his father’s old documents.

A file.

A name.

Project Phoenix.

The final experiment.

The purpose?

Not controlling memories.

Not erasing identities.

Creating a perfect successor.

Someone who could inherit everything.

The empire.

The organization.

The power.

The file contained only one photograph.

A young Alejandro.

And underneath:

SUBJECT: PERFECT HEIR

But below his name was another note.

FAILED.

Alejandro frowned.

Then he saw the second page.

Another subject.

SUBJECT: EMMA MORETTI

Status:

SUCCESSFUL.

The discovery shook him.

Emma wasn’t just hidden.

She was prepared.

His father had spent years creating someone who could replace him.

Someone who could become the next leader of The Vipers.

But then why erase her memories?

Why turn her into a homeless woman?

Unless...

Someone had interrupted the plan.

Someone like Isabella.

A sound interrupted his thoughts.

A phone ringing.

Unknown number.

Alejandro answered.

“Who is this?”

A familiar voice responded.

“Still angry?”

Alejandro froze.

Marco.

“You have five minutes before I hang up.”

Marco laughed softly.

“You always did hate losing control.”

“Where is Isabella?”

“She’s safe.”

“Safe?”

Alejandro’s voice became dangerous.

“If she is hurt—”

“She isn’t.”

A pause.

“But she won’t stay safe forever.”

Alejandro gripped the phone.

“What do you want?”

Marco became silent.

Then:

“I want you to remember.”

Alejandro frowned.

“What?”

“The night Isabella disappeared.”

“I already know.”

“No.”

Marco’s voice became colder.

“You know the version they gave you.”

A pause.

“I want you to remember what actually happened.”

Alejandro looked toward the hidden files.

“Where are you?”

Marco gave him an address.

A church.

An abandoned church outside the city.

Then Marco added:

“Come alone.”

The call ended.

Alejandro arrived thirty minutes later.

The church had been abandoned for years.

Broken windows.

Dust-covered seats.

A place where forgotten things waited.

Marco stood near the altar.

Older.

Tired.

Different.

For the first time, he didn’t look like a criminal.

He looked like a man carrying guilt.

Alejandro raised his weapon.

“Where is Isabella?”

Marco looked at him.

“Before that…”

He pointed toward an old projector.

“You need to see something.”

The screen turned on.

A video appeared.

The quality was old.

But the people were clear.

Alejandro.

Isabella.

Marco.

The night she disappeared.

Alejandro watched.

His younger self was standing in the same room.

Angry.

Broken.

Holding a gun.

Isabella was crying.

“You promised me.”

Young Alejandro said nothing.

“You promised you would protect Emma.”

“I tried.”

“No.”

Isabella shook her head.

“You protected the empire.”

Then someone entered the room.

Someone off camera.

A voice spoke.

A voice Alejandro recognized.

His blood turned cold.

Because the voice belonged to...

Marco.

But the video continued.

Marco walked into the room.

And young Alejandro handed him the gun.

Alejandro stopped breathing.

The screen showed Marco pointing the weapon.

Then Isabella said:

“Marco…”

A gunshot.

The video ended.

The church became silent.

Alejandro slowly lowered his weapon.

His hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From realization.

Marco had not betrayed him recently.

Marco had betrayed him fifteen years ago.

“You…”

Alejandro could barely speak.

“You killed her.”

Marco closed his eyes.

“No.”

Alejandro stared.

“Then explain.”

Marco looked at him.

“I pulled the trigger.”

A pause.

“But Isabella survived.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

Marco whispered:

“Because the bullet was never meant for her.”

The lights inside the church suddenly turned off.

A voice echoed from the darkness.

A voice Alejandro knew.

A voice that belonged to the one person who had controlled everything.

“You finally remembered.”

A figure stepped forward.

Not Lorenzo.

Not Marco.

Someone else.

Someone Alejandro thought had died years ago.

Someone who should have been impossible.

Isabella.

Alive.

Standing in front of him.

But the expression on her face was not relief.

It was fear.

Because she looked directly at Alejandro and said:

“Run.”

A gunshot exploded.

The bullet hit the wall behind him.

And Isabella whispered the words that changed everything:

May you like

“They found us.”

To be continued...
