CHAPTER 9 The Woman Holding the Gun

The gunshot echoed through the hospital corridor.

For a moment...

Nobody moved.

The sound seemed impossible.

A place built to save lives had suddenly become a battlefield.

The security guard lay on the floor, clutching his shoulder.

Alive.

Bleeding.

But alive.

And standing over him...

Holding a smoking handgun...

Was Eleanor Carter.

The woman everyone believed had spent thirty years buried beneath the past.

"Cole..."

Emily's weak voice came from the operating room entrance.

Everyone turned.

A nurse had allowed her to see what was happening through the open doors.

Her face was pale.

"What's happening?"

Cole immediately moved toward her.

"Stay inside."

But Eleanor spoke.

"Don't."

Her voice was old.

Tired.

Yet somehow powerful.

"She deserves to know."

Cole looked at the gun.

"Put it down."

Eleanor stared at him.

"You sound just like Richard."

The name hit him.

"How do you know my father?"

A sad smile appeared on her face.

"Because I was the woman who loved him before everyone else tried to destroy him."

Detective Hayes raised his weapon.

"Ma'am, put the gun on the floor."

Eleanor looked at him.

"I didn't come here to hurt anyone."

"Then why shoot?"

She looked at the wounded guard.

"Because he reached for his weapon."

The other officers checked.

She was right.

The guard's hand was inches away from his firearm.

Hayes lowered his weapon slightly.

Not because he trusted her.

Because the situation was becoming far more complicated.

Victoria watched Eleanor carefully.

Then she laughed.

"You always were dramatic."

Everyone looked at her.

Eleanor's expression changed.

The sadness disappeared.

Replaced by years of anger.

"You."

The single word carried decades of pain.

Victoria smiled.

"You should have stayed hidden."

Eleanor tightened her grip on the gun.

"You should have finished the job thirty years ago."

Silence.

Cole looked between them.

"What job?"

Neither woman answered.

Then Eleanor looked at him.

"You want the truth?"

Cole nodded.

"Yes."

"Then you need to know something."

She pointed at Victoria.

"She didn't just steal Richard's fortune."

"She stole my daughter."

The hallway went silent.

Samuel closed his eyes.

He already knew.

"No..."

He whispered.

Eleanor looked at him.

"You knew."

Samuel lowered his head.

"I suspected."

"You promised Richard."

"I promised him I would protect the children."

"Not protect his secrets."

The old lawyer looked broken.

Cole stepped forward.

"Your daughter..."

"Was Grace?"

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes."

Everyone looked toward Emily.

Emily's eyes filled with shock.

"But..."

"I was adopted."

Eleanor looked at her.

"You were."

"But Richard loved you."

Emily covered her mouth.

Cole felt his entire understanding of his family collapse again.

Eleanor continued.

"Richard and I had Grace."

"Victoria knew."

"She knew Richard had an heir before she ever entered our lives."

"She married him because of the fortune."

Victoria snapped,

"Lies."

Eleanor ignored her.

"When Richard discovered what she was planning..."

"He tried to protect Grace."

"So Victoria took her."

Cole's fists tightened.

"What happened to Grace?"

Eleanor looked at Emily.

"I found her."

Everyone froze.

Emily whispered,

"What?"

"I found you."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"No."

"I would remember."

"You were three years old."

Eleanor's voice cracked.

"Your memories were changed."

Cole frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Eleanor looked toward Victoria.

"Ask her."

Victoria smiled.

"Go ahead."

"Tell them."

"Tell them how broken you were."

Eleanor's face became pale.

"I was drugged."

"Richard was framed."

"And my daughter was taken away."

Detective Hayes looked confused.

"Wait."

"If Emily is Grace..."

"Then who is the woman in the video?"

Samuel answered.

"Richard's message was not about Emily."

Everyone looked at him.

"It was about another secret."

He pointed toward Victoria.

"Victoria has been using another identity for decades."

Hayes frowned.

"Elizabeth Voss."

Samuel nodded.

"The woman who supposedly disappeared after her family died."

Eleanor whispered,

"She didn't disappear."

"She changed her face."

"Changed her name."

"And married Richard."

Victoria suddenly smiled.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

She no longer looked afraid.

She looked confident.

"You've all spent hours chasing ghosts."

She looked at Cole.

"You think Richard was a hero?"

"You think Eleanor was innocent?"

She laughed.

"They're both lying."

Cole stared.

"Why should I believe you?"

"Because I have proof."

She reached into her jacket.

Slowly.

Everyone aimed their weapons.

But she pulled out a small black folder.

"I knew this day would come."

She threw it toward Cole.

He picked it up.

Inside...

DNA reports.

Legal documents.

Medical records.

His hands froze.

"What is this?"

Victoria smiled.

"The truth."

Cole looked at the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

His face slowly changed.

Emily noticed.

"Cole?"

He didn't answer.

"What does it say?"

He looked at her.

His voice was barely audible.

"These documents..."

"...say Grace Carter died twenty-six years ago."

Emily froze.

"No."

Victoria smiled.

"And they also prove..."

She stepped closer.

"...the woman standing beside you..."

"...is not Grace."

The entire hallway erupted.

Emily stared at the papers.

"No..."

Cole looked at Eleanor.

Then Samuel.

Then Victoria.

His world shattered once again.

Because if the documents were real...

Then the woman he loved...

The mother of his children...

Might be another carefully created lie.

Suddenly...

The hospital elevator doors opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a black coat.

Everyone turned.

Nobody moved.

Because the man looked exactly like the person they had just watched on the screen.

Richard Carter.

Alive.

He looked at Cole.

Then at Victoria.

Then at Emily.

And said:

"Stop."

His voice shook the entire hallway.

"Because all of you..."

"...have been fooled."

Richard slowly walked forward.

"The woman you think is Grace..."

"...is not my daughter."

Silence.

Then he looked directly at Emily.

"I'm sorry."

"But I need to tell my son the truth."

A pause.

"The woman carrying your children..."

May you like

"...is the reason Grace Carter disappeared."

End of Chapter 9...
