CHAPTER 10 The Father Who Came Back From the Grave

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the impossible man standing at the end of the hospital hallway had just destroyed the last piece of certainty anyone had left.

Richard Carter.

Alive.

The man whose funeral had been attended by thousands.

The billionaire whose death had been mourned across Texas.

The father Cole had buried in his heart.

Standing right there.

Breathing.

Looking at him.

Cole couldn't move.

His entire body felt frozen.

For thirty years, he had carried memories of a father who was gone.

The last conversation.

The last handshake.

The last time Richard looked at him and said:

"Take care of the family."

But now...

Richard was alive.

And the first thing he did was accuse Cole's wife.

The woman lying in an operating room.

The woman carrying his children.

The woman he had sworn to protect.

"You."

Cole's voice cracked.

"You were alive?"

Richard looked down.

"I was."

The answer was painful.

Not defensive.

Not an excuse.

Just pain.

Cole walked closer.

"You let me bury you."

Richard looked away.

"I had no choice."

"No choice?"

Cole laughed bitterly.

"You let your own son believe you were dead."

Richard accepted the anger.

"I know."

"You let me grow up thinking I lost you."

"I know."

"You let me suffer."

Richard's eyes filled slightly.

"I know."

For the first time that night...

The powerful Richard Carter looked like a broken father.

Not a billionaire.

Not an empire builder.

Just a man who regretted his decisions.

Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him."

Everyone looked at her.

She smiled.

"Richard has always been good at creating stories."

Richard looked at her.

"And you have always been good at destroying lives."

The two stared at each other.

Thirty years of hatred existed between them.

Not anger.

Not rivalry.

Something much darker.

Detective Hayes pointed at Richard.

"Mr. Carter."

"You need to explain why everyone thought you were dead."

Richard nodded.

"I will."

"But first..."

He looked toward Emily.

"She needs to know."

The operating room doors opened slightly.

Emily was awake.

Weak.

Confused.

"Know what?"

Richard looked at her.

And the sadness in his eyes was impossible to fake.

"The truth about who you are."

Cole stepped between them.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"If you have something to say..."

"Say it to me."

Richard nodded.

"You deserve that."

He took a breath.

"Twenty-six years ago..."

"I discovered Victoria was planning to take control of Carter Industries."

"She had manipulated documents."

"Created fake accounts."

"Moved money."

"She wasn't just after my fortune."

"She wanted everything."

Cole looked at Victoria.

"And Grace?"

Richard's face changed.

"Grace was the reason I couldn't fight her publicly."

"Because she threatened my daughter."

Emily whispered,

"Your daughter?"

Richard looked at her.

"Yes."

"My daughter."

A tear escaped Emily's eye.

"Then why don't I remember?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"Because I made a mistake."

The hallway became silent.

Richard continued.

"Victoria didn't kidnap Grace."

Everyone looked shocked.

"What?"

Richard looked at Eleanor.

"She tried."

"But she failed."

Eleanor's expression changed.

Richard continued.

"Grace disappeared because I hid her."

Emily stared.

"You..."

"You hid me?"

Richard nodded.

"To save you."

Cole shook his head.

"That makes no sense."

Richard looked at him.

"Victoria had people everywhere."

"Police."

"Judges."

"Business partners."

"Everyone."

"So I created a new identity."

"I sent Grace away."

"I erased her connection to the Carter family."

Emily whispered,

"With no memories?"

Richard looked devastated.

"Yes."

"Because I believed a child without the Carter name would be safer."

Samuel Boone lowered his head.

"I helped."

Cole looked at him.

"You knew?"

Samuel nodded.

"I helped create the new records."

"The new life."

"The new name."

Cole looked at Emily.

"And you never knew?"

Emily shook her head.

"I only knew my adoptive parents."

"I was told my biological family died."

Victoria laughed.

A cold laugh.

"How touching."

"Everyone pretending they were protecting her."

She pointed at Richard.

"But you weren't protecting her."

"You were controlling her."

Richard's face hardened.

"Be quiet."

"No."

Victoria stepped closer.

"Tell them the rest."

"Tell them why you disappeared."

Richard remained silent.

That silence was enough.

Cole noticed.

"What aren't you telling us?"

Richard looked at him.

Then at the floor.

Finally...

"I didn't disappear because Victoria was winning."

"I disappeared because I discovered someone else was helping her."

Everyone waited.

"Someone inside our family."

Hayes frowned.

"Who?"

Richard looked directly at Cole.

Cole felt his stomach drop.

"No."

Richard nodded slowly.

"Your brother."

The hallway froze.

Cole whispered,

"I don't have a brother."

Richard's expression became filled with regret.

"You do."

A nurse stepped out of the operating room.

"Mr. Carter."

Everyone turned.

"The babies are stable."

Relief appeared for a brief moment.

Then the nurse continued.

"But..."

"We found something strange."

Cole immediately looked worried.

"What?"

The nurse held a small plastic bag.

Inside was a tiny bracelet.

A hospital identification bracelet.

From twenty-six years ago.

Richard stared at it.

His face lost all color.

"No..."

Cole frowned.

"What?"

Richard stepped closer.

His hands shook as he looked at the bracelet.

Then he whispered:

"This belonged to Grace."

Emily's breathing stopped.

"But..."

Richard looked at her.

"That's impossible."

He turned the bracelet over.

On the back was a name.

Not Grace.

Not Emily.

A different name.

A name nobody expected.

MICHAEL CARTER JR.

Cole stared.

"Michael..."

Richard's face turned pale.

Because that was the name of his identical twin brother.

The man everyone believed died before Cole was born.

Richard whispered:

"My brother didn't die."

The lights flickered again.

And from the hospital speaker...

A distorted voice suddenly echoed.

"Hello, Richard."

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

"You finally found out."

A pause.

Then:

"But you're too late."

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

"No..."

The voice laughed.

"Your son has already met his real enemy."

The speaker went silent.

Then one final sentence appeared on every screen:

THE CARTER FAMILY WAS NEVER BUILT ON BLOOD.

May you like

IT WAS BUILT ON A LIE.

End of Chapter 10...
