CHAPTER 14 The Heir Nobody Knew Existed

The hallway became a museum of impossible things.

A dead man who wasn't dead.

A missing daughter who returned.

A hidden brother.

A woman who had stolen an identity.

And now...

Another Carter heir.

Thomas Carter stood beneath the red emergency lights, calm and confident.

Like he had been waiting his entire life for this exact moment.

Richard stared at him.

His face was completely drained of color.

"No..."

Thomas smiled.

"You said that the last time you saw me."

Cole looked between them.

"What is happening?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was too heavy.

Thomas walked closer.

"You spent decades searching for Grace."

"You spent decades blaming Michael."

"You spent decades pretending you were protecting the family."

He looked at Richard.

"But you forgot one person."

Richard's voice trembled.

"Thomas..."

The name alone carried years of regret.

Cole noticed.

His father knew him.

This wasn't another stranger.

This was another hidden chapter.

"Who is he?" Cole demanded.

Richard closed his eyes.

"My first son."

Silence.

The words hit harder than any explosion.

Cole stared.

"First?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"Before Eleanor."

"Before Victoria."

"Before everything."

Thomas smiled bitterly.

"Before Richard Carter became a billionaire."

"Before he decided some children were worth keeping..."

"...and others were easier to erase."

Thomas reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old photograph.

He threw it onto the table.

Cole picked it up.

The image showed a young Richard.

Standing beside a woman.

And a little boy.

Thomas.

The same eyes.

The same face.

The same Carter blood.

Richard whispered:

"I was twenty-one."

"I was young."

"I made mistakes."

Thomas laughed.

"Mistakes?"

"You abandoned me."

"I was trying to protect you."

"No."

Thomas stepped closer.

"You were trying to protect your future."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

This family wasn't built on one betrayal.

It was built on layers of them.

Generation after generation.

Secrets stacked like bricks.

Detective Hayes looked at Thomas.

"Why reveal yourself now?"

Thomas smiled.

"Because now everyone is finally paying attention."

He looked around.

"Richard's gone."

"Victoria's exposed."

"Michael is desperate."

"And Cole..."

He looked directly at him.

"...finally understands what being a Carter means."

Cole's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas answered:

"Never knowing who is telling the truth."

A nurse suddenly ran into the hallway.

"Mr. Carter!"

Everyone turned.

"Your wife is awake."

Cole immediately moved.

But Thomas spoke.

"Before you go..."

Cole stopped.

Thomas held up another folder.

"You should see this."

"What is it?"

"The reason Victoria attacked Emily."

Cole's expression changed.

"What?"

Thomas nodded.

"She wasn't trying to kill the babies."

"She was trying to prevent one specific child from being born."

Cole grabbed the folder.

Inside were medical records.

DNA tests.

Inheritance documents.

His hands froze.

"What am I looking at?"

Thomas answered:

"The reason your family war started."

Cole read the first page.

Then the second.

His face slowly changed.

"No."

Thomas watched him.

"Yes."

Cole looked up.

"This can't be real."

"What does it say?" Hayes asked.

Cole couldn't answer.

Thomas did.

"It says one of the Carter twins..."

"...is not biologically Cole's."

The hallway went silent.

The words destroyed everything.

Emily's name.

His children.

His future.

Everything suddenly became uncertain.

Cole looked toward the operating room.

"No."

Thomas continued.

"Victoria discovered it before anyone else."

"She used that information to control Emily."

"She threatened her."

"She forced her into silence."

Cole's hands shook.

"Who is the father?"

Nobody breathed.

Richard looked at Thomas.

"You knew."

Thomas nodded.

"I found the records."

"Years ago."

Michael laughed softly.

"So that's why."

Everyone turned.

Michael looked at the documents.

"That's why Victoria panicked."

"That's why she needed the babies gone."

Cole couldn't move.

His entire world had narrowed into one question.

Who was his child?

Who wasn't?

Then...

The operating room doors opened.

Emily appeared.

Weak.

Pale.

But alive.

She looked at Cole.

Immediately, she knew.

Something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered.

Cole looked at her.

The woman he loved.

The woman who had suffered.

The woman who had hidden the truth.

"Emily..."

His voice broke.

"Is there something you need to tell me?"

Her face changed.

Fear.

Not surprise.

Fear.

And that single reaction answered more than words.

Cole stepped back.

"No..."

Emily started crying.

"Cole..."

"Tell me."

The entire hallway watched.

Even Richard.

Even Michael.

Even Victoria.

Emily closed her eyes.

"I wanted to tell you."

"But I was afraid."

Cole whispered:

"Afraid of what?"

She looked toward the babies.

Then back at him.

"Afraid you would look at me differently."

Thomas quietly said:

"The truth is always the most expensive thing in this family."

Emily finally spoke.

"The doctors were wrong."

Cole stared.

"What?"

"The second baby..."

She swallowed.

"He's yours."

Relief almost appeared.

Then she continued.

"But the first baby..."

Silence.

Cole's heart stopped.

"Whose is it?"

Emily looked down.

"I don't know."

Everyone froze.

"I don't know?"

Emily cried.

"Because the records were changed."

"Someone altered my medical history."

"Someone changed the DNA files."

Cole stared.

"Who?"

Emily looked toward Victoria.

Then toward Richard.

Then Michael.

Finally...

Toward Thomas.

"No..."

She whispered.

"The person who did this..."

"...is someone none of you suspected."

The hospital television turned on again.

A final message appeared.

Not from Michael.

Not from Thomas.

From an unknown sender.

A photograph appeared.

A woman.

A young woman.

Standing beside Richard Carter.

And beside her...

A baby.

The caption appeared:

THE REAL CARTER HEIR WAS NEVER MISSING.

Then another line:

SHE WAS RAISED INSIDE THE FAMILY THE ENTIRE TIME.

Everyone looked at each other.

Because the photograph revealed the final secret.

The woman holding the baby...

Was not Victoria.

Not Eleanor.

Not Grace.

It was someone who had been standing beside them all along.

The camera zoomed in.

The name appeared.

DR. SARAH HARPER.

May you like

The doctor who had been saving Emily's children.

End of Chapter 14...
