CHAPTER 13 The Man Behind the Shadow

"Looking for me?"

The voice came from behind Cole.

Every muscle in his body tightened.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

He turned.

Standing in the darkness of the emergency hallway was a man wearing a black coat.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

A face that looked almost identical to Richard Carter.

Michael Carter.

Alive.

Real.

Standing less than ten feet away.

Nobody had heard him enter.

Nobody had seen the elevator open.

Nobody understood how a man who was supposed to be outside the hospital was suddenly standing among them.

Detective Hayes immediately raised his weapon.

"Don't move!"

Michael smiled.

"Always so dramatic."

"You know, Detective..."

"You and Richard have the same problem."

Hayes frowned.

"What problem?"

Michael tilted his head.

"You both believe rules protect people."

He looked around.

"But rules only protect the people who write them."

Cole stepped forward.

"You threatened my children."

Michael looked at him.

A strange sadness appeared.

"Your children."

He repeated the words.

"That is exactly what Richard taught you."

Cole's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

Michael walked closer.

"He taught you to believe blood creates family."

"But it doesn't."

"Choices do."

Richard stepped between them.

"Michael."

For the first time, Michael's expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

"Thirty years."

"Thirty years, brother."

"And that is the first thing you say?"

Richard looked exhausted.

"What do you want?"

Michael smiled.

"The same thing I always wanted."

"Recognition."

The hospital lights suddenly returned.

The operating room door unlocked.

Doctors rushed out.

"Cole!"

He turned immediately.

Dr. Harper removed her mask.

"The oxygen system is restored."

Everyone exhaled.

"The babies?"

"Stable."

Cole nearly collapsed from relief.

But Dr. Harper wasn't finished.

"However..."

Her expression changed.

"Emily lost a lot of blood."

Cole's face tightened.

"Is she okay?"

"We're doing everything we can."

Michael watched quietly.

Then whispered:

"Interesting."

Cole turned.

"What?"

Michael looked toward the operating room.

"Even after everything..."

"You're still choosing them."

Cole stared at him.

"You expected me not to?"

Michael smiled.

"That's why Richard always chose you."

Richard looked at his brother.

"What are you talking about?"

Michael answered:

"You were always the favorite."

The hallway went silent.

"Richard gave you the company."

"Father gave you the approval."

"Mother gave you love."

Michael's voice became colder.

"And I got nothing."

Richard looked down.

"I was wrong."

Michael laughed.

"Now you admit it?"

"After thirty years?"

He stepped closer.

"Do you know what it feels like to watch your brother become everything you wanted?"

"To watch him receive love while you receive suspicion?"

Cole noticed something.

Behind Michael's anger...

There was pain.

Deep pain.

Samuel Boone spoke quietly.

"Michael..."

"You don't want revenge."

Michael looked at him.

"Don't pretend you understand me."

"I do."

Samuel shook his head.

"You don't want the fortune."

"You want your brother to admit he failed you."

Silence.

For one second...

Michael's expression broke.

Then it returned.

"You always were too observant, Samuel."

Suddenly, alarms from the security system began again.

A new message appeared on the screens.

Not from Michael.

From someone else.

Everyone looked up.

The text appeared:

YOU STILL DON'T KNOW THE REAL STORY.

Michael's face changed.

"What?"

Another line appeared.

MICHAEL WAS NEVER THE MASTER PLAN.

The entire hallway froze.

Michael stepped toward the screen.

"No."

A video started playing.

An old recording.

Richard's voice.

But younger.

Decades younger.

"If you're seeing this..."

"...then both my sons failed to find the truth."

Cole stared.

"Both sons?"

Richard looked confused.

The video continued.

"My greatest mistake was believing I could control the damage."

"I couldn't."

The camera moved.

A second person entered the frame.

A woman.

Everyone froze.

Victoria.

But younger.

Much younger.

Standing beside Richard.

Smiling.

The younger Victoria spoke:

"Everything is ready."

The present Victoria stared at the screen.

"No..."

Richard's recorded voice continued:

"You promised me you would stop."

Young Victoria smiled.

"I promised nothing."

Cole looked at the screen.

Then at Victoria.

"You worked with him?"

Victoria didn't answer.

The video continued.

Young Victoria held a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Birth records.

Adoption documents.

And one final document.

A contract.

The title appeared:

CARTER FAMILY SUCCESSION PLAN

Michael stepped closer to the screen.

His face became pale.

"No."

Richard's recorded voice continued:

"I discovered the truth too late."

"The Carter family was not destroyed by my brother."

"Not by my wife."

"But by the person I trusted most."

The camera zoomed in.

The signature appeared.

Everyone saw it.

Everyone recognized it.

The signature belonged to:

RICHARD CARTER

Cole looked at his father.

"You signed it."

Richard looked horrified.

"I don't remember."

Michael laughed.

A broken laugh.

"You don't remember because you were drugged."

Everyone turned.

Michael stared at the screen.

Then at Victoria.

"You used both of us."

Victoria finally spoke.

"Enough."

Her voice was no longer confident.

It was desperate.

The hospital doors suddenly opened.

A group of armed men entered.

Everyone froze.

Their leader removed his sunglasses.

"I apologize for interrupting."

Detective Hayes raised his weapon.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

"Someone who has spent thirty years cleaning up Carter family mistakes."

He looked toward Victoria.

"Mrs. Voss."

Victoria's face turned white.

"You're dead."

The man laughed.

"Apparently everyone in this family has trouble staying dead."

He placed a folder on the table.

"Inside are the original documents."

"The real inheritance."

"The real identities."

"The real reason Grace disappeared."

Cole stared.

"Who are you?"

The man looked at Richard.

Then Michael.

Then Victoria.

And finally...

At Cole.

"My name is Thomas Carter."

Silence.

Richard stepped back.

Impossible.

There was only one reaction.

"No..."

Thomas smiled.

"Yes."

"I am the son your father erased from history."

A pause.

May you like

"The oldest Carter heir."

End of Chapter 13...
