CHAPTER 4 The Last Promise of Richard Carter

The old man's voice was barely louder than the rain outside.

Yet every person in the room heard him.

"I promised your father..."

"...I'd tell you the truth only if someone tried to kill his grandchildren."

Silence swallowed the VIP suite.

Even the heart monitor seemed quieter.

Cole stared at the stranger.

He had never seen him before.

But Victoria had.

And for the first time in decades...

The woman who terrified governors, CEOs, and judges looked genuinely afraid.

"No..." she whispered.

"You were supposed to stay gone."

The old man smiled faintly.

"I tried."

"Cole," the man said, removing his weathered cowboy hat. "My name is Samuel Boone."

"I was your father's lawyer."

Cole frowned.

"Our family lawyer died fifteen years ago."

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

"The public lawyer died."

"I was the private one."

Victoria snapped, "He's lying!"

Samuel didn't even look at her.

"Richard Carter hired me thirty years ago to prepare documents that no court, no bank, and no member of your family ever knew existed."

Cole felt his stomach tighten.

"My father never mentioned you."

"He wasn't allowed to."

Emily winced as another contraction rippled through her body.

Doctors continued monitoring the babies while trying to keep her calm.

Dr. Harper looked toward Samuel.

"If this isn't urgent, she needs surgery."

Samuel nodded.

"It is urgent."

"Because if I don't speak now..."

"...none of them will survive."

The room fell silent again.

Victoria laughed.

"You're bluffing."

Samuel reached inside his old leather briefcase.

Every security guard instinctively stiffened.

Instead of a weapon...

He pulled out a faded brown envelope.

The paper was yellow with age.

Across the front, written in Richard Carter's unmistakable handwriting, were seven words.

ONLY FOR MY SON, COLE.

Cole's breathing stopped.

He recognized his father's handwriting instantly.

He hadn't seen it since the funeral.

Victoria lunged.

"Give me that!"

Despite his age, Samuel stepped aside with surprising speed.

Victoria stumbled forward.

Cole caught the envelope before it hit the floor.

His hands trembled.

The seal had never been broken.

Not once.

Samuel nodded.

"Open it."

Victoria screamed.

"NO!"

It was the first time anyone had ever heard panic in her voice.

Cole slowly broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

One old photograph.

And a small brass key.

Nothing more.

He unfolded the letter.

The first line made his chest tighten.

Son...

If you're reading this, then I have failed you.

Cole swallowed hard.

His father's words continued.

I hoped the truth would die with me.

But if someone has forced this letter into your hands...

Then Victoria has already crossed the line I prayed she never would.

Victoria screamed.

"He's lying!"

Samuel calmly replied,

"It's your husband's handwriting."

"No!"

"It can be forged!"

Cole ignored them.

He kept reading.

There are two Carter fortunes.

The first is the one everyone knows.

Oil.

Real estate.

Banks.

Billions of dollars.

Victoria controls that fortune.

But she never discovered the second one.

Cole frowned.

Second fortune?

Richard's letter continued.

Forty years ago, before I met Victoria, I purchased land in West Texas that everyone believed was worthless.

I never sold it.

Not even to my own company.

That land belongs only to you.

Cole looked up.

"My ranch..."

Samuel nodded.

Ten years after I bought it...

Engineers discovered the largest untapped freshwater aquifer in Texas beneath that land.

Fresh water.

Not oil.

Water.

Enough to supply millions of people for generations.

The room went completely still.

Even the lawyers looked stunned.

Cole whispered,

"My ranch..."

Samuel finished the sentence.

"...is worth more than every oil field Victoria owns."

Victoria's face turned white.

"Impossible."

Samuel smiled sadly.

"You never read Richard's personal records."

Cole stared at the photograph inside the envelope.

It showed his father standing beside a much younger Samuel.

Behind them...

A wooden gate.

On the gate was a carved symbol.

Exactly the same symbol branded onto every fence post at Cole's ranch.

He had seen it every day of his life.

He had never questioned it.

Richard's letter continued.

Victoria spent years searching for oil deeds.

She never searched for water rights.

She never understood that the future belongs to water, not oil.

Cole slowly lowered the letter.

"So..."

Samuel nodded.

"Your father left you the richest piece of land in Texas."

Victoria shouted,

"He's lying!"

Samuel reached into the briefcase again.

This time he removed several certified geological surveys.

Government seals.

Engineering reports.

Federal registrations.

Every document bore Richard Carter's signature.

Every one was dated years before his death.

Victoria's knees nearly buckled.

She suddenly understood.

Richard hadn't made a mistake in his will.

He had tricked her.

He had allowed her to inherit billions...

While quietly leaving something even greater to his son.

"But..." Cole whispered.

"What does that have to do with Emily?"

Samuel looked toward the hospital bed.

"Everything."

"Victoria discovered the truth six weeks ago."

Cole's eyes snapped toward his stepmother.

Samuel continued.

"She hired investigators."

"They followed Emily."

"They searched your ranch."

"They found the old survey markers."

Victoria's silence confirmed every word.

Cole felt his heartbeat pounding.

"So the attacks..."

"Weren't personal."

Samuel shook his head.

"They were business."

Victoria suddenly laughed.

A broken, desperate laugh.

"You still don't understand."

She looked directly at Cole.

"As long as you have an heir..."

"...that land can never become mine."

Emily gasped.

Cole's blood ran cold.

Victoria continued.

"If your bloodline ends..."

"The inheritance becomes contested."

"And contested inheritances..."

She smiled weakly.

"...can be bought."

The room erupted with horrified whispers.

She had admitted it.

Not directly.

But enough.

A police officer burst through the hospital door.

"Everyone stay where you are!"

Three more officers followed.

One detective stepped inside.

He looked around at the destroyed room.

The injured guards.

The bruises on Victoria's neck.

The crying pregnant woman.

Then his eyes settled on Cole.

"Mr. Carter..."

"I'm Detective Daniel Hayes."

"I need everyone to remain calm."

Before anyone could respond...

Another officer hurried in holding a tablet.

"Detective!"

"You need to see this."

Hayes frowned.

"What is it?"

"We just received a call from the fire department."

"The ranch fire wasn't an accident."

Cole stepped forward.

"They found something?"

The officer nodded slowly.

"They searched the burned north barn."

"And underneath the collapsed floor..."

"...they found a hidden underground room."

Samuel's face changed instantly.

"No..."

he whispered.

"It was never supposed to be discovered."

Cole frowned.

"What room?"

The officer looked directly at him.

"They found..."

He hesitated.

"...a child's bedroom."

Silence.

No one understood.

"A bedroom?" Cole asked.

"My wife has never been pregnant before."

The officer swallowed.

"That's not the strange part."

"What is?"

"They also found..."

"...children's drawings on the walls."

Cole frowned.

"So?"

The officer zoomed in on a photo from the scene.

Everyone stared at the screen.

Every drawing showed the same thing.

A man.

A woman.

And...

Two small children holding their hands.

At the bottom of one drawing, written in childish handwriting, were four words that made Emily scream in terror.

May you like

"WAITING FOR MY BROTHER."
