CHAPTER 5 The Room Beneath the Barn

Emily's scream echoed through the hospital corridor.
"No!"
Every doctor turned toward her.
Her heart monitor erupted into frantic beeps.
Dr. Harper rushed to stabilize her.
"Emily, breathe!"
But Emily wasn't looking at the doctors.
She was staring at the photo on the detective's tablet.
Her lips trembled.
"I know that room..."
The words froze everyone in place.
Cole slowly turned.
"You've... seen it before?"
Emily closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Finally, she whispered,
"Yes."
Detective Daniel Hayes frowned.
"When?"
Emily swallowed.
"The first month after we got married."
Cole's eyebrows knitted together.
"What?"
"You told me you were decorating the guest house that weekend."
Emily nodded through tears.
"I lied."
The admission struck Cole like another blow.
Not because she had lied.
Because he could see how deeply she regretted it.
"I didn't want you involved."
"Involved in what?"
Emily looked at Victoria.
"In her."
Victoria's expression hardened again.
"You should've kept your mouth shut."
Emily ignored her.
"She invited me to the ranch."
Cole frowned.
"My ranch?"
Emily nodded.
"You were away buying cattle in Oklahoma."
"She said she wanted us to bond."
Samuel Boone sighed.
"I was afraid of this."
Emily began speaking slowly, as though reopening a wound she had spent years trying to bury.
"She took me to the old north barn."
"It was empty."
"Or so I thought."
"She unlocked a trapdoor hidden beneath a pile of hay."
Cole's face drained of color.
"There was a trapdoor?"
Emily nodded.
"We climbed down a wooden staircase."
"The room underneath..."
"...looked like a nursery."
Everyone listened in silence.
"There were toys."
"A rocking horse."
"Children's books."
"A tiny wooden cradle."
Cole whispered,
"I've owned that ranch my whole life."
"I never knew."
Samuel answered quietly.
"Because your father built it himself."
Emily continued.
"There were paintings all over the walls."
"A little boy."
"A little girl."
"They looked..."
She hesitated.
"...happy."
Victoria rolled her eyes.
"It was an old room."
"Nothing more."
Emily suddenly shouted,
"No!"
The outburst startled everyone.
"It wasn't just a room!"
She looked at Cole.
"There were photographs."
Cole frowned.
"What photographs?"
Emily's breathing became uneven.
"They showed your father."
"Richard."
"Holding..."
She stopped.
"Holding what?"
Emily squeezed her eyes shut.
"I couldn't tell."
"Every picture had been burned."
Samuel lowered his head.
"So she found it."
Victoria glared at him.
"You should've destroyed everything."
Samuel replied calmly,
"Richard ordered me never to."
Detective Hayes looked toward Samuel.
"Mr. Boone."
"I think it's time you explain."
Samuel nodded.
"I suppose it is."
He removed his glasses.
"Thirty-two years ago..."
"...before Richard Carter married Victoria..."
"...he had another child."
The room exploded.
Cole stared at him.
"What?"
Samuel repeated himself.
"He had another child."
"A daughter."
Cole felt dizzy.
"My father never had a daughter."
"As far as you know."
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"There it is."
"The ghost finally returns."
Samuel ignored her.
"The pregnancy was kept secret."
"Richard feared kidnappers."
"So only five people knew."
"Richard."
"The child's mother."
"Myself."
"The family doctor."
"And..."
He looked directly at Victoria.
"...her."
Cole frowned.
"What happened?"
Samuel's voice grew heavy.
"The child disappeared."
Silence.
"No body."
"No ransom."
"No witnesses."
"Nothing."
Detective Hayes leaned forward.
"You think Victoria kidnapped her?"
Samuel didn't answer immediately.
"I think..."
"...someone wanted Richard to believe she was dead."
Victoria folded her arms.
"Ridiculous."
Samuel looked at her.
"Then tell us."
"What happened to little Grace?"
Victoria's confident mask cracked.
Just for a second.
Cole noticed.
"So there really was a Grace."
Victoria remained silent.
Emily reached for Cole's hand.
"The nursery..."
"It had one name carved above the cradle."
Cole looked at her.
"What name?"
She whispered,
"Grace."
The room fell completely silent.
Samuel closed his eyes.
"I knew Richard would name her that."
Cole looked between them.
"My father searched for her?"
Samuel nodded.
"For twenty-three years."
"He spent hundreds of millions."
"Private investigators."
"Interpol."
"Retired FBI agents."
"Nothing."
Victoria smirked.
"He died disappointed."
Samuel stared at her.
"No."
"He died hopeful."
Cole frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Samuel reached into his briefcase once again.
This time he produced a small leather journal.
"It belonged to Richard."
Cole carefully accepted it.
Inside were hundreds of handwritten entries.
One page had been folded.
Richard's handwriting filled the page.
If Grace is alive...
She will one day return home.
And if she has children...
They will inherit everything beside Cole.
Cole slowly looked up.
Victoria's breathing became noticeably heavier.
Samuel nodded.
"Now you understand."
Cole whispered,
"No..."
Samuel finished the thought.
"If Grace survived..."
"...your child isn't the only legal heir."
The detective rubbed his temples.
"So we've got..."
"A missing daughter."
"A hidden inheritance."
"A burned ranch."
"A pregnant woman assaulted."
"And a billionaire family at war."
He looked at Cole.
"I've investigated murders that made more sense than this."
Before anyone could respond...
The hospital television mounted in the corner suddenly switched on by itself.
Every screen in the VIP wing changed channels simultaneously.
A black background appeared.
Then white text.
No logo.
No station name.
Just a live video feed.
Someone wearing a black cowboy hat stood in front of the burning remains of Cole's ranch.
The figure slowly removed the hat.
A woman.
Her face remained hidden in shadow.
Then she spoke.
Her voice echoed through every television in the hospital.
"Victoria..."
Victoria's eyes widened in horror.
"No..."
The woman continued.
"You spent thirty years trying to erase me."
She stepped into the firelight.
Half of her face was illuminated.
The other half remained hidden.
Samuel Boone dropped his cane.
Detective Hayes stared in disbelief.
Emily covered her mouth.
Cole couldn't move.
The woman smiled.
"Hello, Mother."
Victoria's legs gave way beneath her.
She collapsed onto the hospital floor.
The woman looked directly into the camera.
Then at Cole.
And uttered the sentence that changed the meaning of everything they thought they knew.
"My name..."
"...is Grace Carter."
May you like
"I've come home."
