CHAPTER 11 The Brother Buried Alive

The hospital lights flickered one more time.
Then darkness swallowed the hallway.
Emergency alarms screamed.
Red lights flashed across the walls.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone was trying to understand the same impossible truth.
Michael Carter.
Richard's twin brother.
The man who supposedly died decades ago.
The man whose name had just appeared on a bracelet belonging to a child connected to their family.
Was alive.
"Richard..."
Cole's voice was quiet.
Almost afraid.
"You had a brother?"
Richard didn't answer immediately.
He stared at the bracelet as if it had dragged him back twenty-six years.
Finally, he whispered:
"I had a brother."
The way he said it made everyone uncomfortable.
Not "I have."
"I had."
Like Michael Carter belonged to a life that no longer existed.
Detective Hayes stepped forward.
"Everyone needs to slow down."
He looked around.
"We have too many unanswered questions."
He pointed toward Richard.
"You were declared dead."
"You weren't."
He pointed toward Victoria.
"You've been using another identity."
Then toward Eleanor.
"You survived an incident nobody knew about."
Finally toward Emily.
"Your identity was hidden."
He shook his head.
"This family has more secrets than the government."
Samuel Boone quietly replied:
"More dangerous too."
Inside the operating room, Emily listened.
She looked exhausted.
But she refused to close her eyes.
Because she knew.
Every secret they uncovered was connected to her.
To her past.
To her children.
To Cole.
A nurse approached.
"Mrs. Carter, you need to rest."
Emily looked at her.
"No."
"I need the truth."
The nurse hesitated.
Emily's voice became stronger.
"Everyone spent my entire life deciding what I was allowed to know."
"I'm done being protected by lies."
Richard walked toward the window.
Rain poured against the glass.
"When Michael and I were children..."
"We were inseparable."
"We looked identical."
"We thought that made us stronger."
"But it made him dangerous."
Cole frowned.
"Why?"
Richard turned.
"Because Michael believed everything I had belonged to him."
Victoria smiled.
"Finally."
"The truth."
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
"Richard always wanted to be the hero."
"But he never told anyone about his brother."
"Because he was ashamed."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Michael was unstable."
Victoria laughed.
"And you were jealous."
The accusation hung in the air.
Richard ignored her.
"Michael became obsessed with Carter Industries."
"He believed our father chose me because I was better."
"So he spent years trying to prove I was unworthy."
"What happened?"
Richard looked at the floor.
"One night..."
"He disappeared."
Cole asked:
"And everyone thought he died?"
Richard nodded.
"His car was found near a cliff."
"Burned."
"No body."
Hayes frowned.
"No body?"
Richard looked at him.
"That should have told us something."
Suddenly...
A hospital phone on the wall rang.
Everyone froze.
Nobody wanted to answer.
It rang again.
And again.
Finally, Detective Hayes picked it up.
"Detective Hayes."
Silence.
Then his face changed.
"Who is this?"
Nobody could hear the response.
But Hayes slowly looked at Richard.
Then at Cole.
Then at Emily.
He whispered:
"That's impossible."
He handed the phone to Richard.
Richard hesitated.
Then answered.
"Hello?"
A voice came through.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
"Hello, brother."
Richard closed his eyes.
"No..."
Michael laughed softly.
"You always did know how to ruin a surprise."
Everyone stared.
The voice continued.
"Thirty years, Richard."
"Thirty years watching you pretend to be the good brother."
Richard gripped the phone.
"Where are you?"
"Closer than you think."
"You killed innocent people."
Michael laughed.
"No."
"I exposed them."
"You destroyed families."
"No."
"I corrected history."
Cole stepped closer.
"Michael."
The voice paused.
"Ah."
"Cole Carter."
"My nephew."
Cole's face hardened.
"You attacked my wife."
Michael laughed.
"Your wife?"
"No."
"The last piece of Richard's greatest mistake."
Emily's eyes widened.
"What does that mean?"
Michael continued.
"Tell him, Richard."
"Tell your son why Grace was hidden."
Richard remained silent.
Michael laughed.
"Of course."
"You never told him."
Cole looked at his father.
"What is he talking about?"
Richard looked devastated.
"Michael knows things he shouldn't."
"Then explain."
Richard took a deep breath.
"The night Grace disappeared..."
"I wasn't hiding her from Victoria."
Cole frowned.
"Then who?"
Richard looked at Emily.
"I was hiding her from Michael."
The room froze.
Emily's face went pale.
"What?"
Richard whispered:
"Because Michael wanted my daughter."
"Not because of money."
"Because he believed..."
"...Grace was the rightful heir."
Victoria suddenly spoke.
"He's right."
Everyone turned.
She smiled.
"Michael wasn't trying to destroy the Carter family."
"He was trying to take it."
Richard looked at her.
"You worked with him."
Victoria smiled.
"For a while."
Cole's eyes narrowed.
"For a while?"
She shrugged.
"Your uncle and I had the same goal."
"Remove Richard."
"Take control."
"But then..."
She looked toward the phone.
"Michael became too ambitious."
The voice on the phone suddenly changed.
The calm disappeared.
"Victoria."
Everyone froze.
Michael continued.
"You were always so arrogant."
Victoria stepped back.
"Where are you?"
"You want to know?"
A pause.
"Look outside."
Nobody moved.
Then Cole slowly walked toward the window.
The hospital parking lot was visible below.
Hundreds of cars.
Rain.
Darkness.
And one vehicle parked directly beneath the emergency entrance.
A black SUV.
The driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
Gray hair.
Same height as Richard.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Michael Carter looked up.
Straight toward the window.
Even from twelve floors below...
Cole knew.
His uncle was looking directly at him.
The phone crackled.
Michael's voice whispered:
"I've waited my entire life for this moment."
"Richard lost everything."
"Victoria lost control."
"And now..."
He smiled.
"...Cole loses his family."
Suddenly, every hospital door locked.
The lights turned red.
A security announcement echoed.
"Emergency lockdown activated."
Hayes grabbed his weapon.
"What did he do?"
A nurse screamed from the operating room.
Everyone turned.
The monitors connected to Emily's babies began flashing.
One of the heart rates dropped.
Dr. Harper shouted from inside:
"Someone disconnected the oxygen system!"
Cole ran toward the operating room.
But the automatic doors wouldn't open.
Michael's voice came through every speaker.
"Choose carefully, nephew."
"Save the babies..."
A pause.
"Or find out what happened to your missing sister."
The hallway went silent.
Then Michael said the final words:
May you like
"Because you only have five minutes."
