Chapter 8: The Underground Archive

The iron staircase groaned beneath their footsteps.
Each step echoed through the darkness like the ticking of an ancient clock.
Richard led the way, a flashlight in one hand.
Two security guards followed close behind.
Emily and Sophia walked together in the middle, their small hands tightly clasped.
Behind them came Dr. Brooks, Margaret Ellis, and the estate manager.
Vanessa...
did not move.
She remained at the top of the staircase, staring into the darkness.
Her legs felt frozen.
Because she recognized the smell.
Cold stone.
Old paper.
Machine oil.
She hadn't breathed that air in seven years.
The descent seemed endless.
Twenty steps.
Thirty.
Forty.
Finally...
they reached the bottom.
The passage opened into a vast underground chamber.
It looked nothing like a forgotten wine cellar.
The room was immaculate.
Someone had been here recently.
Shelves lined the walls.
Metal filing cabinets stood in neat rows.
Old security monitors filled an entire wall.
Some still glowed with static.
In one corner sat a diesel generator, quietly humming.
Power.
After all these years.
Richard swept his flashlight across the room.
"Someone's been maintaining this place."
One guard crouched beside the generator.
"It's warm."
The room fell silent.
"It was turned on today."
Emily slowly walked toward the blue teddy bear resting against a wooden chair.
She picked it up.
It wasn't dusty.
It smelled faintly of laundry detergent.
As if it had been washed only days before.
She hugged it instinctively.
Then noticed something stitched into one paw.
A name.
Lucas.
Her eyes widened.
"This is his."
Meanwhile, Margaret approached one of the filing cabinets.
Each drawer carried a handwritten label.
FINANCIAL RECORDS
PROPERTY DEEDS
PRIVATE CORRESPONDENCE
Then...
one drawer made her stop.
The label simply read:
JULY 14
She pulled.
Locked.
Richard handed her the silver key Emily had used upstairs.
It fit.
The drawer slid open with a metallic hiss.
Inside were dozens of thick folders.
Every one carried the same symbol engraved on the hatch upstairs.
Not the Harrington crest.
Another family.
One Richard had never seen before.
He picked up the first folder.
Its title read:
PROJECT LEGACY
Dr. Brooks frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
Richard opened the file.
Inside were birth certificates.
Medical records.
DNA reports.
And handwritten notes.
The first page carried a chilling sentence.
"Selection must occur within twelve hours of birth."
The second page was worse.
"Candidates must be separated immediately to ensure environmental divergence."
Richard's blood ran cold.
"This isn't medical research."
Dr. Brooks nodded grimly.
"No."
"It reads like..."
"...an experiment."
Sophia looked up at Richard.
"What does that mean?"
He couldn't answer.
Emily quietly squeezed Sophia's hand.
One of the guards called out.
"Sir."
Across the room stood a large corkboard covered with photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Richard walked closer.
His flashlight trembled.
The oldest pictures showed three newborn babies.
Emily.
Sophia.
Lucas.
Then came photographs from every year afterward.
The girls learning to walk.
Emily outside a tiny apartment.
Sophia at expensive private schools.
Lucas...
No one knew where.
But his pictures continued.
A small cabin in the woods.
A classroom.
A soccer field.
A library.
Someone had documented all three children's lives.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every milestone.
Without their knowledge.
Emily whispered,
"Someone was watching us."
Richard suddenly realized something.
The newest photographs had been taken...
today.
One showed Emily standing outside Royal Star Manor before entering.
Another captured Sophia blowing out birthday candles.
A third showed the ballroom only minutes before the blackout.
The picture had been taken from inside the room.
Everyone instinctively turned around.
Whoever had taken it...
could still be here.
"Search everything!"
Richard ordered.
The guards spread through the archive.
One checked every cabinet.
Another searched behind the shelves.
Nothing.
No footprints.
No hidden doors.
No person.
Yet someone had clearly been here.
Very recently.
Then Dr. Brooks noticed an old reel-to-reel tape recorder sitting alone on a wooden desk.
Beside it lay a single cassette.
A handwritten label read:
PLAY WHEN THEY ARE TOGETHER.
Margaret looked uneasy.
Richard inserted the tape.
The machine clicked.
For a moment...
only static.
Then...
a man's voice filled the chamber.
Calm.
Educated.
Precise.
"If you are hearing this..."
"...then all three children have survived."
Every adult exchanged startled looks.
The voice continued.
"My name is Arthur Sinclair."
"I designed Project Legacy."
Richard frowned.
"I've never heard that name."
Neither had anyone else.
Arthur continued.
"The Harrington family believed they were funding an orphan outreach initiative."
Vanessa, still standing at the top of the stairs, closed her eyes.
"No..."
Arthur's voice continued.
"They never asked enough questions."
"Their money built this archive."
"Their influence protected it."
"But they were never the true architects."
Richard's face hardened.
"My father..."
Arthur interrupted as though answering him.
"Your father discovered the truth too late."
"He tried to stop us."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Richard's breathing stopped.
"My father tried to stop it?"
Arthur replied from across time.
"That is why..."
"...he was murdered."
The tape abruptly stopped.
The machine clicked.
Silence returned.
Richard stood frozen.
Every memory of his father's sudden "heart attack" came crashing back.
The paranoia.
The warnings.
The sealed cellar.
The unfinished conversations.
It hadn't been a natural death.
Someone had silenced him.
Then...
a slow clap echoed through the archive.
Everyone spun around.
The sound came from the far end of the chamber.
Where moments earlier...
there had been only darkness.
A man stepped into the light.
Gray suit.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
He smiled politely.
"As impressive as Arthur always was..."
he said calmly,
"...he did have a terrible habit of revealing too much."
Richard narrowed his eyes.
"Who are you?"
The stranger smiled.
"My name..."
"...is Victor Sinclair."
He glanced toward Emily.
Then Sophia.
Finally...
toward the empty space beside them.
His smile widened.
"It seems..."
May you like
"...Lucas is running late."
