Chapter 3: The Wristband

The countdown continued.
00:21
00:20
No one moved.
Hundreds of guests stood perfectly still beneath the crystal chandeliers, watching the giant LED screen as if it held the answer to a question none of them had known to ask.
The orchestra had quietly packed away their instruments.
The birthday cake stood untouched.
The candles had burned almost halfway down.
Even little Sophia, dressed in a dazzling white princess gown, clutched her father's hand without understanding why everyone had suddenly forgotten her birthday.
"Daddy..."
she whispered.
"What's happening?"
Richard looked down at her.
For the first time in seven years, he couldn't answer his daughter.
His eyes drifted toward the other little girl.
The child in the faded pink dress.
The one holding an old hospital wristband in her trembling fingers.
00:15
The security guard beside her knelt once more.
"Sweetheart..."
"Where did you get that bracelet?"
She looked at it for a long moment before answering.
"My grandma kept it."
"She said I wasn't supposed to lose it."
"Ever."
The guard swallowed.
"Where is your grandmother now?"
The girl's eyes lowered.
"She died last winter."
Another silence settled over the ballroom.
A woman near the front quietly wiped away tears.
Vanessa forced herself forward.
Her heels echoed sharply against the marble floor.
She stopped only a few feet away from the child.
"What's your name?"
The little girl hesitated.
Then answered softly.
"Emily."
"And your last name?"
"...Grace."
Vanessa froze.
Grace.
The same name that had appeared on the hospital bracelet in the video.
"No..."
Vanessa whispered.
"No..."
Richard looked between them.
His pulse quickened.
"Emily Grace..."
The name tugged at a memory he couldn't quite reach.
00:08
Across the ballroom, one elderly guest suddenly stepped forward.
His face had turned pale.
"I know that name."
Everyone looked toward him.
He was Dr. Leonard Brooks.
A retired obstetrician.
Nearly eighty years old.
Respected.
Quiet.
He had delivered thousands of babies during his career.
Including...
Sophia Harrington.
Vanessa's face lost what little color remained.
"Doctor..."
Dr. Brooks stared at the screen.
Then at Emily.
His hands began to shake.
"I prayed..."
"...this day would never come."
Gasps spread through the crowd.
Richard turned toward him.
"What do you mean?"
The old doctor closed his eyes.
"I remember that morning."
"There was..."
"...an incident."
Vanessa shouted before he could continue.
"Stop!"
The entire ballroom jumped.
Her voice cracked with panic.
"He's old!"
"He doesn't remember correctly!"
"He retired years ago!"
Dr. Brooks slowly looked at her.
"I remember more than you think."
00:03
The countdown neared its end.
Guests instinctively raised their phones again.
Millions of people were already watching online.
News accounts had begun sharing clips from the livestream.
Comments poured in faster than anyone could read.
Is this real?
Who is Emily?
Was a baby stolen?
00:02
Richard's phone buzzed.
Then buzzed again.
And again.
Dozens of calls.
Business partners.
Friends.
Reporters.
He ignored every one of them.
00:01
Emily quietly slipped the hospital wristband back into her pocket.
Then she looked directly at Vanessa.
Not with anger.
Not with hatred.
Only confusion.
She asked the question that froze everyone in place.
"Why are you afraid of me?"
Vanessa couldn't speak.
00:00
The countdown disappeared.
The ballroom lights dimmed.
The second video began.
Unlike the first recording, this wasn't hospital security footage.
It was home video.
Old.
Slightly blurry.
Someone had filmed it with a handheld camcorder.
The date appeared.
July 16. Seven years ago.
Only two days after the hospital footage.
A tiny apartment filled the screen.
Peeling wallpaper.
Secondhand furniture.
A small crib beside a worn sofa.
A young woman sat in a wheelchair.
She looked exhausted.
Pale.
Fragile.
Yet she smiled lovingly at the baby sleeping in her arms.
"She's beautiful," a man's voice behind the camera said.
The woman nodded.
"Our Emily."
Guests looked toward the little girl.
Emily stared at the screen without blinking.
She had never seen this video before.
The recording continued.
The baby's tiny hospital bracelet became visible.
The cameraman zoomed in.
The name was perfectly clear.
Emily Grace
The birth date matched.
Exactly.
Then...
someone knocked on the apartment door.
Three loud knocks.
The young father opened it.
Standing outside...
was a woman wearing oversized sunglasses.
Elegant.
Expensive.
Perfectly composed.
Vanessa Harrington.
Seven years younger.
She held an envelope.
"I think..."
she said softly,
"...we need to talk."
The ballroom erupted.
"No way!"
"She knew them!"
"She knew Emily's family!"
Vanessa staggered backward.
Richard stared at her.
"You told me..."
"...you'd never met them."
She couldn't answer.
On the screen...
the young father frowned.
"Who are you?"
Vanessa glanced down the hallway before replying.
"I'm here to help."
She handed him the envelope.
"There are fifty thousand dollars inside."
His eyes widened.
"What for?"
Vanessa took a deep breath.
Then spoke the sentence that turned the ballroom into complete chaos.
"I want you to leave the city."
"And never tell anyone..."
"...that this child was born."
The video froze.
A final message appeared beneath the image.
THE REST OF THE RECORDING HAS BEEN LOCKED.
ACCESS GRANTED IN 24 HOURS.
Before anyone could react...
the ballroom doors slammed shut on their own.
Every light went out.
Someone screamed.
Then...
in the darkness...
a little girl's voice whispered from somewhere inside the room.
"She's here."
"But..."
May you like
"...I'm not the only child."
