Chapter 13: Mother and Daughter

The silence that followed was heavier than the gunshots.
Dr. Amelia Voss stood at the mouth of the tunnel, her pistol unwavering.
Her white laboratory coat contrasted sharply with the soot-dark stone walls, making her seem almost unreal.
She wasn't breathing heavily.
She wasn't angry.
She looked... disappointed.
Like a scientist whose experiment had been interrupted moments before completion.
Victor groaned behind the overturned filing cabinet, clutching his bleeding shoulder.
Lucas knelt beside him, pressing a torn piece of fabric against the wound.
"Hold still."
Victor gave a weak smile.
"You sound just like Arthur."
Lucas didn't answer.
Eleanor Voss slowly rolled her wheelchair forward.
"Put the gun down, Amelia."
Amelia smiled.
"I've spent thirty years cleaning up your mistakes."
"And now..."
"...you want to give me orders?"
The old woman sighed.
"I wanted to end it."
"No."
Amelia replied calmly.
"You wanted to confess."
"There's a difference."
Richard stepped between the two girls and Amelia.
"If you're going to shoot someone..."
"...it'll have to be me first."
Amelia looked at him with genuine curiosity.
"Richard Harrington."
"Subject Forty-Seven."
"You've always been predictable."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"I'm not your subject."
"No?"
She tilted her head.
"Tell me."
"Why did you instinctively shield the children?"
"Because they're children."
"Exactly."
She smiled.
"You were conditioned to."
Dr. Brooks stepped forward despite the danger.
"Enough."
"This ends tonight."
Amelia laughed softly.
"Doctor Brooks."
"The only obstetrician who ever questioned the project."
"You should've kept asking questions."
"I tried."
"You stopped."
"I was threatened."
"You complied."
The old doctor's shoulders slumped.
He couldn't deny it.
Emily looked at Lucas.
"Why is everyone talking like we're experiments?"
Lucas looked into her eyes.
"Because..."
"...that's how they saw us."
Emily shook her head.
"But we're not."
Lucas smiled.
"No."
"We never were."
Amelia slowly lowered her pistol.
Not in surrender.
In confidence.
"You all misunderstand Project Legacy."
She reached into her coat pocket and removed a small remote control.
No buttons.
Just a fingerprint scanner.
Victor's face drained of color.
"No..."
He struggled to stand.
"Don't."
Amelia ignored him.
"Our goal was never to create perfect children."
She placed her thumb on the scanner.
"It was to answer one question."
The remote beeped.
Deep beneath the archive, machinery awakened.
The walls vibrated.
Massive gears began turning somewhere below.
Another hidden door.
Another sealed chamber.
Richard frowned.
"What did you just activate?"
Amelia looked at him.
"The original archive."
Lucas whispered,
"Level Four..."
Victor closed his eyes.
"I destroyed the blueprints."
Amelia smiled.
"You destroyed copies."
The floor beneath the far end of the archive slowly separated.
A circular platform rose from below.
Dust poured off its edges.
On the platform stood...
rows of steel cabinets.
Hundreds of them.
Each one identical.
Each one labeled with a subject number.
Subject 001.
Subject 002.
Subject 003.
Dozens.
Hundreds.
Richard felt sick.
"How many children..."
Amelia answered quietly.
"Three hundred and twelve."
Margaret nearly collapsed.
"No..."
Emily wandered toward one of the cabinets.
Lucas caught her arm.
"Don't."
She looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because..."
"...you don't need to see what's inside."
But she had already noticed something.
The cabinets weren't large enough for people.
They were filing vaults.
She opened one.
Inside...
were toys.
A stuffed rabbit.
A school drawing.
A birthday card.
A baby shoe.
Photographs.
Letters.
Every cabinet contained the entire childhood of one child.
Catalogued.
Preserved.
Observed.
Sophia whispered,
"They kept... everything."
Amelia nodded proudly.
"Every drawing."
"Every report card."
"Every scraped knee."
"Every dream."
Richard stared at her in disbelief.
"You stole their lives."
"I recorded them."
"You watched them without permission."
"I protected history."
"No."
His voice echoed through the chamber.
"You protected your obsession."
For the first time...
Amelia's smile disappeared.
"You sound exactly like Arthur."
Eleanor looked down.
"He was right."
Amelia turned sharply.
"He was weak."
"He remembered they were children."
"They were data."
"They were families."
"They were variables."
Lucas slowly stood.
"No."
Everyone turned toward him.
"You've made one mistake."
Amelia raised an eyebrow.
"Only one?"
Lucas nodded.
"You kept records on all of us."
"I did."
"You predicted our futures."
"Correct."
"You watched every decision."
"Yes."
Lucas smiled.
"But you stopped watching yesterday."
Amelia frowned.
"What?"
Lucas reached into his backpack.
He removed a small black hard drive.
Victor gasped.
"Impossible..."
Lucas held it up.
"I didn't spend seven years hiding."
"I spent seven years copying."
Silence.
Richard looked at the drive.
"What is it?"
Lucas smiled.
"The entire Project Legacy database."
Amelia's calm expression finally cracked.
"You couldn't have accessed it."
"I already did."
"That's impossible."
Lucas shook his head.
"You taught me every password."
Victor whispered,
"Arthur..."
Lucas nodded.
"He left me clues."
Amelia took one step forward.
"Give it to me."
Lucas didn't move.
"No."
"I'll kill you."
Lucas looked at Emily and Sophia.
Then back at Amelia.
"If you kill me..."
"...three hundred and twelve families will still learn the truth."
Amelia froze.
"What did you do?"
Lucas smiled.
"For once..."
"...I planned further ahead than you."
At that exact moment...
every monitor in the archive lit up.
Not with security footage.
With a countdown.
UPLOAD IN PROGRESS
87%
Richard stared.
"Upload?"
Lucas nodded.
"I copied everything."
"And sent it outside."
Victor whispered,
"To who?"
Lucas answered with quiet certainty.
"Everyone."
Amelia's hand tightened around her pistol.
For the first time in decades...
the woman who controlled every variable had encountered one she hadn't predicted.
Then the countdown jumped.
96%
97%
98%
Amelia raised her gun.
Lucas stood perfectly still.
The archive fell silent.
Only one number remained.
