Chapter 1: The Little Girl Nobody Wanted at the Party

Nobody understood why the little girl was crying.

Not the guests dressed in shimmering evening gowns.

Not the photographers moving from table to table, chasing perfect smiles.

Not the violinists filling Royal Star Manor with soft music.

And certainly not the security guards who gently but firmly guided the child toward the enormous golden doors.

She looked painfully out of place.

Everything around her sparkled.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling like frozen waterfalls.

Thousands of white roses decorated every corner.

Golden ribbons wrapped around polished marble pillars.

A seven-tier birthday cake towered in the middle of the ballroom, glowing beneath warm lights.

It was the kind of celebration magazines loved to photograph.

The kind of birthday little girls dreamed about.

Yet standing only a few feet away...

was a child who looked like she'd wandered in from another world.

Her pink cotton dress had faded after countless washes.

The hem had been stitched by hand.

One sneaker was missing its lace.

The other had a tiny hole near the toe.

Her dark hair refused to stay in place despite someone obviously trying to brush it that morning.

Tears rolled quietly down her cheeks.

She couldn't have been older than seven.

One security guard knelt until his eyes met hers.

His expression softened.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart."

"This is a private event."

"You can't stay here."

She didn't answer.

Her eyes never left the giant birthday cake.

The colorful candles.

The balloons floating overhead.

The children laughing together.

Her lips quivered.

Then she whispered so softly the guard almost missed it.

"Please..."

"I just wanted to see it."

The guard hesitated.

He had escorted uninvited guests out before.

Reporters.

Salespeople.

Even relatives causing trouble.

But never...

a little girl.

Behind him, several guests watched with curiosity.

"Whose daughter is that?"

"Maybe she's lost."

"No..."

"I think she's homeless."

Someone quietly pulled out a phone and began recording.

Another guest frowned.

"This is ruining the atmosphere."

Near the stage stood the evening's hostess.

Vanessa Harrington.

Elegant.

Confident.

Perfect in every photograph.

She wore a silver designer gown that shimmered beneath the lights.

Every guest knew her.

Every camera adored her.

Tonight she was celebrating the seventh birthday of her daughter...

Sophia.

Everything had been planned for months.

The decorations.

The orchestra.

The celebrity chef.

Even the fireworks waiting outside.

Nothing...

absolutely nothing...

was supposed to interrupt tonight.

Vanessa noticed the small crowd forming near the entrance.

She walked over gracefully.

"What seems to be the problem?"

One guard answered respectfully.

"Just a child who wandered inside."

"We're escorting her out."

Vanessa barely looked at the girl.

"I'm sure her parents are nearby."

"Please handle it quietly."

She turned to leave.

Then...

the child spoke again.

"I wasn't trying to ruin anything."

Vanessa paused.

Still facing away.

"I just..."

The girl's voice cracked.

"...wanted to see a birthday party."

Something in those words made several guests glance at each other.

A middle-aged woman in the crowd pressed her lips together.

Another quietly lowered her wine glass.

The guard asked gently,

"Where are your parents?"

No answer.

"Are you here alone?"

The girl nodded.

"Do you know where you live?"

She looked down.

Another nod.

"Can we call someone for you?"

Silence.

The ballroom suddenly felt much larger.

Much colder.

The violin music continued playing, but now it sounded strangely distant.

One little boy standing beside the cake whispered to his mother,

"Why is she crying?"

His mother couldn't answer.

The guard tried one last time.

"Sweetheart..."

"Why did you come here?"

The little girl slowly lifted her eyes toward the giant cake.

Candles danced across its glossy surface.

She smiled...

for only half a second.

Then tears returned.

"Because..."

"...today is my birthday too."

The words landed like stones dropped into still water.

Everything stopped.

The conversations.

The laughter.

Even the orchestra seemed to lose its rhythm.

A photographer slowly lowered his camera.

Someone whispered,

"Oh my God..."

Another guest covered her mouth.

Vanessa turned completely around for the first time.

Now she actually looked at the child.

Really looked.

The worn shoes.

The patched dress.

The tiny hands shaking from embarrassment.

Something flickered across Vanessa's face.

Not pity.

Not kindness.

Recognition?

No.

Impossible.

She had never seen this child before.

Or...

had she?

The little girl took one careful step toward the cake.

"I don't want any presents."

"I don't want food."

"I just wanted..."

She swallowed hard.

"...to see what a real birthday looks like."

No one spoke.

Not a single person.

The silence became unbearable.

One guest quietly wiped away tears.

Another stopped recording.

Even the security guards no longer knew what to do.

Then...

without warning...

every light inside the ballroom flickered once.

Twice.

Three times.

The orchestra stopped playing.

The enormous LED screen behind the birthday stage suddenly went black.

Guests looked upward.

Confused murmurs spread through the room.

"Technical issue?"

"Power outage?"

"No..."

The electricity hadn't gone out.

Only the screen.

The slideshow celebrating Sophia's childhood disappeared.

The smiling family photos vanished.

The screen remained dark for several long seconds.

Then...

a single folder appeared.

White letters.

Black background.

No music.

No animation.

Just one file.

CONFIDENTIAL ARCHIVE

Someone in the audience frowned.

"What is that?"

Another guest laughed nervously.

"Probably the wrong video."

The event manager hurried toward the control booth.

"This isn't scheduled!"

The technician stared at his monitors.

His face drained of color.

"I..."

"I didn't do this."

The mouse wasn't responding.

Neither was the keyboard.

The folder opened by itself.

Inside...

only one video.

Its title appeared slowly across the giant screen.

SEVEN YEARS AGO

The little girl looked up.

Her crying stopped instantly.

Her eyes widened.

Almost...

as if she'd seen that title before.

And across the ballroom...

Vanessa Harrington's champagne glass slipped from her fingers.

It shattered against the marble floor.

She whispered one trembling word.

May you like

"No..."
