Chapter 2: The Video That Was Never Meant to Be Seen

The sound of shattered crystal echoed across the silent ballroom.
Every head turned toward Vanessa Harrington.
The hostess stood frozen, staring at the giant LED screen as though it had become a ghost from another lifetime.
The champagne at her feet spread slowly across the polished marble floor.
She didn't even notice.
Her breathing had changed.
Fast.
Uneven.
Panicked.
On the stage, the event coordinator grabbed a microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize for the technical difficulties. Please remain calm."
No one listened.
Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the screen.
The technician inside the control booth frantically unplugged cables.
Nothing happened.
The display stayed on.
The file labeled SEVEN YEARS AGO pulsed once.
Then...
it opened.
Static flashed across the screen.
Black.
White.
Black again.
Finally...
a grainy security camera image appeared.
A date stamped in the corner caught everyone's attention.
July 14. Seven Years Earlier.
The footage came from inside a hospital.
The camera overlooked a maternity ward hallway.
Nurses hurried past.
Doctors pushed equipment.
New fathers paced nervously outside delivery rooms.
The quality wasn't perfect.
But it was clear enough.
"What hospital is that?" someone whispered.
"I don't know..."
"It looks familiar."
Vanessa's hands trembled.
"No..."
she whispered again.
"No, no, no..."
Her husband, Richard Harrington, stepped beside her.
He forced a smile.
"It's probably fake."
"A prank."
"Someone hacked the system."
But his voice carried little confidence.
At the front of the ballroom, the little girl had stopped crying.
She watched the screen with complete concentration.
Almost...
as if she had been waiting for this moment.
The security guard beside her noticed.
"Sweetheart..."
"Have you seen this before?"
She didn't answer.
Her small fingers tightened around the edge of her worn dress.
Back on the screen...
a nurse exited one delivery room carrying a newborn wrapped in a pink blanket.
The timestamp read 8:17 A.M.
A second nurse emerged from another room only two minutes later.
She carried another baby.
Also a girl.
The guests leaned closer.
Two newborns.
Born within minutes of each other.
A coincidence?
The footage continued.
One nurse pushed the first baby into the nursery.
The second nurse followed.
Nothing unusual.
Until...
another woman entered.
She wasn't wearing a doctor's coat.
She wasn't a nurse.
She wore expensive clothes beneath a visitor's jacket.
Large sunglasses hid most of her face.
She looked around carefully before stepping inside the nursery.
Several guests frowned.
"Who's that?"
The security footage zoomed automatically.
Not because someone controlled it.
Because the original recording already had.
The woman's face became clearer.
Someone gasped.
Another guest covered his mouth.
"No way..."
Richard looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa looked away.
The woman on the screen...
looked exactly like a much younger Vanessa Harrington.
The ballroom exploded into whispers.
"That's her."
"It can't be."
"Is this edited?"
Vanessa finally found her voice.
"This video is fake!"
"I've never been there!"
But even she sounded uncertain.
On the screen, young Vanessa looked over both shoulders.
The hallway was empty.
She entered the nursery.
One baby slept peacefully.
The other cried softly.
Vanessa approached them.
Then...
the camera angle shifted.
Everyone watched in horrified silence.
She leaned over the bassinets.
Her hands disappeared beneath the blankets.
For several seconds...
the camera couldn't clearly show what she was doing.
Then she stood up.
One pink bracelet slipped from her fingers.
It landed on the floor unnoticed.
She quickly picked it up.
Switched something between the two bassinets.
And walked away.
The nursery door closed behind her.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Someone whispered,
"Did she..."
"No..."
"She couldn't have..."
The video froze.
A red circle appeared around the babies' wristbands.
Hospital identification bracelets.
One read:
Baby Harrington
The other...
too blurry to read.
The image zoomed.
Enhanced.
Sharpened.
Letters slowly became visible.
Baby Grace.
The guests stared.
Richard's face turned pale.
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"No!"
"That's impossible!"
"The footage has been manipulated!"
The technician rushed onto the stage.
"I swear..."
"I've never seen this file."
"It's not even stored in our system."
Another employee shouted from the control room.
"We disconnected the server!"
"The video is still playing!"
Panic spread among the staff.
Phones began recording again.
Guests who had stopped filming earlier now lifted their cameras once more.
One livestream had already gathered thousands of viewers online.
Comments flooded across the screen.
Who is that child?
Is this real?
Was a baby switched?
Vanessa noticed the phones.
"Turn those off!"
"Everyone!"
"Stop recording!"
Nobody obeyed.
Instead...
more people started filming.
The little girl slowly walked closer to the stage.
No guard stopped her this time.
She stared at the frozen image of the nursery.
Then quietly asked,
"Who's Baby Grace?"
No one answered.
Richard looked at the child for the first time.
Really looked.
Her eyes.
Her smile.
Even through the tears...
something about her felt strangely familiar.
His heartbeat quickened.
Impossible.
Sophia...
their daughter...
was seven years old.
So was this little girl.
His mind rejected the thought immediately.
Yet another memory surfaced.
Years ago...
there had been confusion at the hospital.
Only for a few minutes.
A bracelet had reportedly gone missing.
The nurses insisted everything had been resolved.
He'd never questioned it again.
Until now.
Suddenly...
the video resumed.
A nurse entered the nursery.
She frowned.
Looked at both babies.
Checked their wristbands.
Something seemed wrong.
She picked up a clipboard.
Looked again.
Her expression changed instantly.
Confusion.
Concern.
Then...
before she could react...
someone called her from outside.
She hurried away.
She never noticed what had happened.
The footage ended.
Black screen.
The ballroom remained silent.
One elderly guest finally spoke.
"If that's authentic..."
"...then one family lost a daughter."
"And another..."
"...raised the wrong child."
Vanessa snapped.
"Enough!"
She climbed onto the stage and pointed toward the technicians.
"Turn it off!"
"NOW!"
One technician held up both hands helplessly.
"We can't!"
"The system isn't responding!"
Then...
the screen flickered again.
A new message appeared in white letters.
THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
Below it...
another line slowly typed itself across the screen.
The second recording begins in 60 seconds.
A digital countdown appeared.
00:59
00:58
00:57
The crowd instinctively moved closer.
Nobody wanted to leave anymore.
Whatever this was...
it wasn't over.
And standing beneath the glowing countdown...
the little girl quietly reached into the pocket of her faded dress.
She pulled out something tiny.
A faded hospital wristband.
Half torn.
Yellowed with age.
Across its worn plastic surface, only one word remained readable.
May you like
Grace.
