Chapter 15: Home

The vault door opened completely.
No alarms.
No hidden weapons.
No laboratory filled with machines.
Just silence.
A nursery, preserved as though time itself had refused to enter.
Three small cribs stood side by side beneath a mobile of faded paper stars.
The balloons hanging from the ceiling had long since lost their color.
Dust covered the floor.
Yet nothing had been moved.
It was a room built to remember.
Emily stepped inside first.
She wasn't afraid anymore.
Sophia followed, holding her hand.
Lucas entered last, his eyes quietly scanning every corner.
He had imagined this room a thousand times.
It was smaller than he'd expected.
Sadder.
Richard walked slowly toward the center crib.
A tiny nameplate remained attached to its rail.
The letters had faded but were still readable.
EMILY
The second crib.
SOPHIA
The third.
He stopped.
His breath caught.
LUCAS
No numbers.
No subject codes.
No experiments.
Just names.
Children.
Nothing more.
Behind him, Dr. Brooks whispered,
"They were always children."
Margaret quietly nodded.
"And we forgot."
At the far end of the nursery stood a single wooden rocking chair.
On its seat rested a sealed envelope.
Across the front, written in neat blue ink, were four words.
For Whoever Finds This
Lucas picked it up.
The paper had yellowed with age.
The seal had never been broken.
He handed it to Richard.
"No."
Richard gently pushed it back.
"It isn't mine."
Lucas looked confused.
Richard smiled.
"It belongs to all three of you."
Emily, Sophia, and Lucas gathered around.
Together, they opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The signature at the bottom read:
Arthur Sinclair
Emily began reading aloud.
"If this letter has been found..."
"Then I failed to stop what we created."
"For that, I am deeply sorry."
"When I first joined Project Legacy, I believed we could improve children's lives through knowledge."
"Instead, we began treating children as knowledge itself."
"Every report I wrote became another excuse to steal another childhood."
"I told myself I was helping humanity."
"I was only helping fear."
Emily's voice trembled.
She continued.
"If you are reading this, then you survived despite us."
"Not because of us."
"Never let anyone tell you that your worth comes from your birth..."
"Or your wealth..."
"Or your suffering."
"You are not subjects."
"You are not variables."
"You are simply children who deserved ordinary lives."
"Please forgive those who cannot forgive themselves."
"And when this ends..."
"Go home."
The room fell silent.
No one noticed the tears running down Richard's face.
Behind them...
Amelia slowly entered the nursery.
The pistol was gone.
In her hands was only the leather notebook her father had written.
She had read every page while they descended.
Every letter.
Every apology.
Every plea for her to leave Project Legacy behind.
She looked at Eleanor.
For the first time in decades...
not as the architect of an empire.
But as an aging mother who had lost everything to her own ambition.
"I don't know how to undo this."
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"You can't."
"No."
Amelia whispered.
"I suppose I can't."
She walked to the control panel beside the nursery door.
The self-destruct countdown continued.
04:17
She placed her palm on the biometric scanner.
Authorization Accepted.
The monitors throughout the underground complex changed instantly.
SELF-DESTRUCT CANCELED
A collective breath escaped the room.
The evidence was safe.
The records would survive.
The truth would survive.
Victor Sinclair, his wounded shoulder bandaged, slowly approached Richard.
"I'll testify."
Richard looked at him.
"About everything?"
Victor nodded.
"Everything I know."
"It won't bring my father back."
"I know."
"It won't return their childhoods."
Victor lowered his head.
"I know."
"But it's where I should have started."
Hours later...
Police sirens surrounded Royal Star Manor.
Then came investigators.
Federal agents.
Child protection officials.
Forensic teams.
Journalists from around the world.
The archive beneath the manor became one of the largest criminal investigations in the country's history.
Hundreds of families were contacted.
Decades of hidden records were uncovered.
Project Legacy was no longer a secret.
It became a warning.
Several months later...
The ballroom looked completely different.
The chandeliers still sparkled.
The marble still shone.
But there were no velvet ropes.
No private guest list.
No security turning children away.
Royal Star Manor had been transformed into a foundation for children who had lost families through trafficking and illegal adoption.
The old birthday stage remained.
Smaller now.
Warmer.
Real.
Richard stood near the entrance, greeting every child personally.
Sophia ran through the ballroom wearing sneakers instead of a princess dress.
Emily laughed as she helped decorate cupcakes.
Lucas adjusted a banner hanging above the stage.
It read:
EVERY CHILD BELONGS.
No family name.
No sponsors.
Just six simple words.
As sunset painted the windows gold, Richard wheeled Eleanor onto the terrace.
She had chosen to cooperate fully with investigators.
Justice would decide the rest.
She looked toward the laughter inside the ballroom.
"I spent my life trying to discover what makes a family."
Richard remained silent.
After a long pause, she smiled sadly.
"I should have asked the children."
Inside, the lights dimmed.
A birthday cake was carried to the center of the room.
Not seven tiers.
Just one.
Three names were written across the frosting.
Emily
Sophia
Lucas
Every child in the room began counting together.
"Three..."
"Two..."
"One..."
The candles went out.
Applause filled the hall.
Emily looked around the room.
This time...
no one stared because she looked out of place.
No one asked why she was there.
No one tried to escort her to the door.
Sophia wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
Lucas smiled from the other side.
For the first time in their lives...
the three children stood exactly where they belonged.
Together.
And somewhere beyond the music, beyond the laughter, beyond the years that had been stolen from them...
they had finally found the one thing Project Legacy could never manufacture.
May you like
Home.
The End.
