Chapter 11: The Brother She Never Knew

The footsteps grew louder.

Slow.

Measured.

Unhurried.

Each one echoed through the stone corridors beneath Royal Star Manor.

No one reached for a weapon.

No one spoke.

It felt as though the underground archive itself was holding its breath.

Emily stepped forward.

Richard instinctively reached out.

"Emily, wait."

She looked up at him.

"I'm not scared."

"You don't know who's down there."

She smiled softly.

"I think I do."

The footsteps stopped.

Silence returned.

Then, from the darkness beyond the open steel vault, a flashlight beam swept briefly across the corridor ceiling.

Not searching.

Signaling.

Three short flashes.

A pause.

Then three more.

Victor Sinclair's expression changed instantly.

"No..."

Dr. Brooks frowned.

"What is it?"

Victor answered quietly.

"That's Arthur's signal."

Richard looked confused.

"But Arthur is dead."

Victor nodded.

"I buried him myself."

The flashlight flashed again.

Three short bursts.

Victor whispered,

"Unless..."

His sentence trailed off.

A young man's voice echoed from the darkness.

"Victor."

It wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

The single word carried years of history.

Victor's hands began to tremble.

"I know that voice..."

The figure stepped into the dim light.

He was around sixteen or seventeen.

Dark hair.

Blue sweater.

Exactly as Lucas had appeared on the security monitor.

Except this time...

he was real.

He carried no weapon.

Only a worn backpack slung over one shoulder.

And in his left hand...

a thick stack of old files.

Emily's eyes widened.

"You came."

Lucas smiled.

"I promised I would."

Without hesitation, Emily ran toward him.

Richard's heart leaped into his throat.

"Emily!"

But Lucas simply knelt and opened his arms.

Emily hugged him tightly.

To everyone's astonishment...

Lucas hugged her back as though they had known each other forever.

Sophia watched quietly.

There was no jealousy in her eyes.

Only wonder.

After a long moment, Emily stepped back.

"I knew you'd be nice."

Lucas laughed softly.

"How?"

"You always smiled in my dreams."

Victor stared.

"This doesn't make sense."

Lucas looked at him.

"No."

"It doesn't fit your reports, does it?"

Victor said nothing.

Lucas continued.

"You predicted we'd become strangers."

He glanced at Emily.

"But every time she dreamed..."

"...I remembered."

A chill spread through the room.

Dr. Brooks frowned.

"Remembered what?"

Lucas answered without hesitation.

"The nursery."

Margaret Ellis gasped.

"That's impossible."

"You were newborns."

Lucas nodded.

"I don't remember it with my mind."

He placed a hand over his chest.

"I remember it here."

Richard stepped forward.

"You said Subject Zero..."

Lucas interrupted.

"I know."

"I've met him."

The archive fell silent.

Victor took an involuntary step backward.

"You've seen him?"

Lucas nodded.

"For years."

"Where is he?"

Lucas looked toward the tunnel behind him.

"He never left."

Richard frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Lucas raised his flashlight and pointed deeper into the underground complex.

"Everything you've seen..."

"...is only the first level."

Victor closed his eyes.

"There are lower levels..."

Lucas nodded.

"Three more."

Emily looked around nervously.

"Is Subject Zero dangerous?"

Lucas didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he carefully chose his words.

"He's lonely."

Sophia frowned.

"But he kidnapped children?"

Lucas shook his head.

"No."

"He was the child."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Victor finally found his voice.

"We told him the outside world had abandoned him."

Lucas looked directly at Victor.

"You didn't tell him."

"You convinced him."

Victor lowered his head.

Shame flooded his face.

Richard crossed his arms.

"Why reveal everything now?"

Lucas held up the stack of files.

"Because these aren't observation reports."

He placed them on the table.

"They're adoption records."

Richard opened the first file.

His eyes narrowed.

Names.

Addresses.

Birth certificates.

Hundreds of them.

Children from Project Legacy.

Every identity.

Every placement.

Every family.

Dr. Brooks whispered,

"My God..."

Lucas nodded.

"This is everyone."

Richard looked through another folder.

Then another.

Suddenly...

he froze.

His own name.

Richard Harrington.

His hands began to shake.

"No..."

He opened the file.

Inside was a photograph of himself as a baby.

Not at the Harrington estate.

Not in the hospital.

But inside this very underground archive.

Richard's breathing stopped.

"What..."

Victor looked over his shoulder.

His face drained of color.

"No."

Richard slowly looked up.

"What is this?"

Victor whispered,

"It can't be."

Lucas answered for him.

"It can."

Richard turned another page.

The report read:

Subject 47

He stared at the number.

"Subject?"

Lucas nodded.

"Yes."

Richard looked at Victor.

"I was part of Project Legacy?"

Victor stumbled backward until he hit the wall.

"Arthur..."

he whispered.

"You never told me..."

Lucas's expression hardened.

"Arthur didn't know."

Victor looked up.

"What?"

Lucas took a slow breath.

"Because Arthur wasn't the first director."

Silence.

The room seemed colder than before.

Lucas continued.

"He inherited the project."

"So did you."

Richard frowned.

"Then who started it?"

Lucas looked toward the tunnel leading to the lower levels.

His voice became almost a whisper.

"The only person still alive..."

"...who remembers the very first experiment."

At that exact moment, every light in the archive went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Only one emergency bulb remained glowing at the far end of the tunnel.

Beneath it...

a wheelchair slowly rolled into view.

An elderly figure sat motionless.

Too far away for anyone to see the face.

Then a frail, amused voice echoed through the darkness.

"Welcome home..."

May you like

"...Richard."
