CHAPTER 8 — THE SECOND OWNER

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Jonathan stared at my phone.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“What did you do?”

My father didn't answer.

Jonathan stepped closer.

“You knew.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“I knew you'd eventually make the same mistake.”

“What mistake?”

Jonathan's face hardened.

“Trusting him.”

I looked at my father.

“What did you do?”

Daniel slowly stood.

The ropes had been cut, but he still looked weak.

“I built a trap.”

“For Jonathan?”

“For anyone who tried to activate the Bradley system.”

I looked at my phone.

The notification was still there.

SECONDARY OWNER DETECTED.

“Who's the secondary owner?”

My father looked at Victor.

Victor nodded.

Then Daniel said:

“Your mother.”

My stomach dropped.

“Teresa?”

Jonathan suddenly laughed.

“You're lying.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Your mother was never just the person managing your money.”

“Then what was she?”

“The second person authorized to control the trust.”

I stared at him.

“But she betrayed me.”

“She made mistakes.”

“She gave Jonathan my information.”

“She did.”

“She tried to control my house.”

“She did.”

“She humiliated Amy.”

Daniel's expression darkened.

“That was never part of my plan.”

“So why did she do it?”

My father looked away.

“Because she became afraid.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because it's true.”

I stepped toward him.

“Then tell me the truth.”

He nodded.

“You deserve it.”

He looked at Jonathan.

“Twelve years ago, Jonathan discovered that the Bradley system could only be opened by two people.”

“Who?”

“You.”

“And?”

“Teresa.”

Jonathan's face changed.

“That isn't possible.”

Daniel smiled.

“You never knew about the second key.”

“What second key?”

“The mother's key.”

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?”

“Your identity is one half of the security.”

“And hers?”

“Her bloodline is the other.”

I frowned.

“Bloodline?”

Daniel nodded.

“The system was designed to prevent one person from stealing everything.”

I looked at Jonathan.

“So you needed me.”

“Yes.”

“And my mother.”

“Yes.”

“But you already had my mother.”

Jonathan's expression tightened.

“She refused to cooperate.”

I laughed bitterly.

“She spent years controlling me.”

“Not for Jonathan.”

“Then why?”

My father looked at me.

“Because she knew someone would eventually come for you.”

I shook my head.

“She should have told me.”

“Yes.”

“She should have trusted me.”

“Yes.”

“She should never have treated Amy that way.”

“No.”

Daniel's voice became firm.

“That was Teresa's greatest failure.”

I looked at the floor.

For the first time, I could separate two truths.

My mother had been afraid.

And my mother had still hurt us.

Both could be true.

Jonathan suddenly raised his weapon.

“Enough.”

Everyone froze.

“You activated the system.”

I looked at my phone.

“Then what happens now?”

Jonathan smiled.

“You'll transfer ownership to me.”

“No.”

“You don't have a choice.”

He pointed toward the screen.

“You already opened the system.”

I looked at the notification.

There was another message underneath.

SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

My father smiled.

“That's the trap.”

Jonathan stared at him.

“What trap?”

Daniel looked at me.

“The system won't transfer ownership.”

“Then what will it do?”

“It will expose everyone.”

Jonathan's face went pale.

My phone vibrated again.

FULL ACCOUNTING ARCHIVE UNLOCKING.

I stared.

“What's the archive?”

Daniel answered.

“Every transaction.”

“Every company?”

“Yes.”

“Every person?”

“Yes.”

“Every payment?”

“Yes.”

“Even Jonathan?”

“Especially Jonathan.”

Jonathan suddenly moved.

He raised his gun.

Victor stepped in front of me.

A shot exploded.

Victor fell.

“Victor!”

I dropped beside him.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Jonathan turned toward Daniel.

“You've ruined everything.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

He smiled.

“You did.”

Jonathan's men rushed forward.

The police sirens suddenly erupted outside.

Jonathan froze.

Detective Reed's voice came through the warehouse.

“POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”

Jonathan looked furious.

“How?”

I remembered the radio.

Detective Reed had been outside.

He hadn't disappeared.

He had gone silent because he was tracking them.

The armed men dropped their weapons.

Jonathan raised his hands.

Then smiled.

“You think this ends here?”

Detective Reed entered with several officers.

“Jonathan Cross, you're under arrest.”

Jonathan looked at me.

“No.”

He pointed toward my phone.

“This ends when the archive opens.”

I looked down.

The progress bar was moving.

47%

Then:

63%

Then:

81%.

Jonathan's smile disappeared.

“Turn it off.”

I said nothing.

“TURN IT OFF!”

I looked at him.

“No.”

The screen reached:

100%.

A new message appeared.

ARCHIVE RELEASED.

My phone immediately began filling with files.

Bank statements.

Contracts.

Photographs.

Encrypted messages.

Names.

Hundreds of names.

Thousands of transactions.

And then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A folder labeled:

PROJECT FREDERICK.

I stared at it.

“What is that?”

Jonathan's face changed.

Daniel stood up.

“Don't open it.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because that's what they've been hiding.”

I opened the folder.

Inside were photographs of my son.

Frederick.

Sleeping.

Eating.

Playing in our backyard.

Walking with Amy.

Every photograph had a date.

Some were taken months before his first birthday.

My hands began shaking.

“This is surveillance.”

Daniel nodded.

I opened another file.

SUBJECT: FREDERICK BRADLEY

Then another.

AGE: 11 MONTHS

Then:

MEDICAL STATUS

My stomach turned.

They had detailed information about my son's health.

His allergies.

His pediatrician.

His vaccination records.

His daily routine.

Everything.

I looked at Jonathan.

“What were you planning?”

He said nothing.

I opened the final document.

There was a sentence highlighted in red.

CHILD WILL BE TRANSFERRED AFTER SUCCESSFUL OWNERSHIP ACTIVATION.

My blood froze.

“Transferred where?”

No answer.

I looked at my father.

“Dad.”

He closed his eyes.

“Connor…”

“WHERE?”

He finally whispered:

“Overseas.”

My entire body went numb.

My son wasn't just leverage.

They had planned to take him.

For real.

I stood.

Jonathan smiled faintly.

“You're finally understanding.”

I stepped toward him.

“You were going to kidnap my son.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“We were going to relocate him.”

“You're insane.”

“He carries the same genetic key.”

I froze.

“What?”

Jonathan looked at Daniel.

Then at Victor.

Then at me.

“Your son inherited something from your bloodline.”

My mind raced.

“What did he inherit?”

Jonathan smiled.

“The ability to control the trust.”

I stared at Frederick's photograph.

My son wasn't just my weakness.

He was their next target.

Then Detective Reed's radio crackled.

An officer shouted from outside:

“Detective! We have a problem!”

Reed turned.

“What?”

“There's a vehicle approaching.”

“How many?”

“Three SUVs.”

Reed's expression changed.

Jonathan began laughing.

“You thought I came here alone?”

The warehouse doors suddenly exploded open.

Three black SUVs stormed into the building.

Men poured out.

Police shouted.

Gunfire erupted.

I grabbed my father.

“MOVE!”

We ran toward the rear exit.

Victor was still alive, but barely.

Two officers carried him.

Amy and Frederick were nowhere in sight.

I looked at my father.

“Where are they?”

He stared at the chaos.

“They're not here.”

“What?”

“They were never at the warehouse.”

My heart stopped.

“Then where is Amy?”

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“Connor?”

“Who is this?”

“Look outside.”

I ran toward the rear door.

Across the road was a black SUV.

Its rear window rolled down.

Amy was inside.

Frederick was in her arms.

A man held a gun beside her.

My blood froze.

Then the man spoke through the phone.

“You wanted the truth.”

He paused.

“Now come find out who your son really belongs to.”

The SUV accelerated away.

I stood helplessly in the doorway.

My father came up behind me.

I turned toward him.

“Who was that?”

Daniel's face had gone completely white.

He whispered:

“The last person I ever expected to see.”

“Who?”

He looked at the disappearing SUV.

“Evelyn Hale.”

I froze.

“Victor's dead wife?”

Daniel nodded.

“She isn't dead.”

May you like

And then he said something even worse.

“She is Frederick's grandmother.”
