CHAPTER 14 — MY MOTHER POINTED THE GUN AT ME

The red emergency light painted my mother's face in shadows.
Teresa stood at the entrance of the vault.
Frederick was wrapped tightly in a blue blanket against her chest.
And in her other hand was a gun.
Pointed directly at me.
“Mom…”
“Don't come any closer.”
Her voice trembled.
Not with anger.
With fear.
I looked at Frederick.
He was awake.
His tiny fingers were gripping the blanket.
“Is he okay?”
Teresa nodded.
“He's fine.”
“Give him to Amy.”
“She isn't here.”
My heart dropped.
“Where is she?”
Teresa looked behind her.
“Jonathan took her.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
Teresa immediately raised the gun.
“Stay back.”
Evelyn stopped.
“You know I won't hurt him.”
Teresa's eyes hardened.
“You've already hurt him enough.”
I looked between them.
“What is happening?”
Nobody answered.
Then the countdown on the wall continued.
04:17
04:16
04:15
I pointed toward it.
“What happens at zero?”
Teresa looked at Daniel.
He lowered his head.
“Tell him.”
Daniel swallowed.
“The second chamber opens.”
“And?”
“The archive broadcasts.”
“To whom?”
“Everyone.”
I frowned.
“Everyone who?”
“Every government agency connected to the investigation.”
“Every bank.”
“Every company.”
“Every person whose name is in those files.”
My stomach tightened.
“And Jonathan?”
“He loses everything.”
I looked at Teresa.
“Then why are you holding a gun?”
“Because Jonathan isn't the only one who wants the archive.”
She looked at Evelyn.
“Neither is she.”
Evelyn's expression remained calm.
“I want the organization destroyed.”
“You want control after it falls.”
“No.”
Teresa laughed bitterly.
“You always wanted control.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I wanted my children back.”
Teresa's gun trembled.
“You abandoned them.”
“I was forced to.”
“You chose Jonathan.”
“I chose survival.”
“Same thing.”
I looked at Ethan.
He was staring at Evelyn.
“Is she really our mother?”
“Yes.”
Ethan's voice was cold.
“And she left us.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I never left you.”
“You disappeared.”
“I was made to disappear.”
“By whom?”
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“Ask him.”
I turned.
“Dad?”
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Jonathan ordered my family killed.”
“Your family?”
“My parents.”
“Why?”
“Because they knew about the original trust.”
Evelyn interrupted.
“They also knew about the twins.”
Daniel nodded.
“Jonathan wanted everyone connected to the trust eliminated.”
I looked at Teresa.
“But she survived.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Teresa finally spoke.
“Because I made a deal.”
“With Jonathan?”
“Yes.”
“What did you give him?”
She looked down at Frederick.
“Me.”
I stared.
“What?”
“I gave him my loyalty.”
“For years.”
“That's why you controlled my money.”
“Yes.”
“That's why you knew everything about my life.”
“Yes.”
“That's why you invited everyone to my house.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was searching for the vault.”
I shook my head.
“You humiliated Amy.”
“I know.”
“You made her serve everyone while Frederick was sick.”
“I know.”
“You watched her suffer.”
“I know.”
My voice broke.
“Why?”
Teresa looked at me.
“Because I needed Jonathan to believe I was still loyal.”
I stared at her.
“You could have told me.”
“If I told you, Jonathan would have known.”
“You could have trusted me.”
“I was terrified.”
“That doesn't excuse it.”
“No.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
For the first time, my mother looked small.
Not powerful.
Not controlling.
Just tired.
Then a gunshot exploded upstairs.
Teresa flinched.
“They're here.”
“Who?”
“Jonathan's men.”
Ethan stepped toward the entrance.
“How many?”
“Too many.”
Daniel looked at the countdown.
02:58
“We need to get Frederick out.”
Teresa shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the moment we leave, Jonathan gets the archive.”
I looked at the vault.
“What if we destroy it?”
Teresa looked at me.
“You can't.”
“Why?”
“Because the archive is connected to every financial account.”
“If you destroy the physical files, the digital system remains.”
“So?”
“So Jonathan built a failsafe.”
I stared.
“What kind?”
Teresa whispered:
“If the vault is destroyed, the system automatically transfers everything to the final beneficiary.”
“Who?”
She looked at Frederick.
My heart stopped.
“Frederick.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“That's why Jonathan wants him.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't he just take him?”
“Because the transfer requires his DNA.”
I looked at my son.
He was completely unaware of the storm surrounding him.
I stepped toward Teresa.
“Give him to me.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Mom.”
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“Jonathan isn't coming for the money.”
“What?”
“He wants Frederick alive until the transfer.”
“And then?”
Teresa's eyes filled with tears.
“He'll kill him.”
The room went silent.
I felt something inside me turn cold.
“Not happening.”
Teresa nodded.
“I know.”
She handed Frederick to me.
I took my son into my arms.
He immediately grabbed my shirt.
I kissed his forehead.
“I've got you.”
Ethan looked toward the doorway.
“Someone's coming.”
The countdown:
01:44
Footsteps echoed upstairs.
Then downstairs.
Teresa raised her gun.
Daniel grabbed a metal bar.
Evelyn stepped beside Ethan.
For one brief moment, we stood together.
A family that had spent decades destroying itself.
Now united around one child.
Then the basement doors exploded inward.
Men rushed inside.
Gunfire erupted.
I dropped behind the metal table, shielding Frederick with my body.
Ethan fired back.
Daniel tackled one attacker.
Evelyn moved with terrifying speed.
Teresa stood in the center of the chaos.
Then she screamed:
“RUN!”
I looked up.
“Where?”
She pointed toward the far wall.
“There!”
A hidden passage opened.
I grabbed Amy's photograph from the table.
“Where does it lead?”
“To the old church.”
“What church?”
“St. Mary's.”
I remembered it.
The church where my parents had supposedly met.
The place I'd never visited.
Teresa pushed me toward the passage.
“Go!”
“What about you?”
“I'll hold them.”
“No.”
“Connor!”
She looked at me.
“For once, let me be your mother.”
I froze.
She turned toward the attackers.
I ran.
Ethan followed.
Daniel followed.
Evelyn came last.
The passage was narrow.
Dark.
Cold.
We ran for nearly a minute.
Then the tunnel opened beneath an old church.
We emerged into a small crypt.
I looked around.
Candles.
Stone walls.
Old graves.
Ethan stepped beside me.
“Where are we?”
Daniel answered.
“St. Mary's.”
The same church.
The same place my mother had told me my life began.
I looked at Evelyn.
“You said this was where the truth began.”
She nodded.
“It was.”
She walked toward an old stone altar.
Then pressed her hand against the wall.
A secret door opened.
Inside was a small room.
There was only one object.
A wooden box.
Evelyn opened it.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Two names.
ETHAN HALE
CONNOR HALE
Same mother.
Same father.
Then beneath them was another document.
FREDERICK BRADLEY
I picked it up.
The father's name was blank.
The mother's name was blank.
But there was a handwritten note.
DO NOT REGISTER THE CHILD UNTIL THE TRANSFER IS COMPLETE.
My heart stopped.
“What does this mean?”
Evelyn looked at me.
“Frederick was never supposed to be registered.”
“Why?”
“Because Jonathan doesn't want anyone to know he exists.”
“Then how did he know?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Because someone inside your family told him.”
I looked at Daniel.
Then Ethan.
Then the document.
“Who?”
Evelyn pointed at the doorway.
A shadow stood there.
I raised my weapon.
“Who are you?”
The figure stepped into the candlelight.
My blood froze.
It was Jonathan.
He smiled.
“You finally found the birthplace.”
I held Frederick tighter.
“Stay away from my son.”
Jonathan raised both hands.
“I didn't come for him.”
“Then why are you here?”
He looked at Evelyn.
“I'm here for her.”
Evelyn's face went pale.
Jonathan smiled.
“Because she was the one who started all of this.”
I looked at Evelyn.
“What did she do?”
Jonathan's eyes never left her.
“She stole the original heir.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
Jonathan stepped forward.
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“Your mother didn't give you away.”
“She stole you.”
I stared.
“What?”
Jonathan smiled.
“She stole you from me.”
Then he looked at Frederick.
“And she did it again.”
I felt my blood run cold.
“What did she steal?”
Jonathan answered:
“Your son.”
I shook my head.
“Frederick is my son.”
Jonathan smiled.
“Are you sure?”
The church fell silent.
Then he handed me a document.
I opened it.
My hands began shaking.
The DNA results showed:
FATHER: CONNOR BRADLEY — 0%
I stared at the page.
“No…”
Jonathan whispered:
“Your son isn't yours.”
I looked at Frederick.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at Ethan.
And suddenly, every lie I'd believed about my family collapsed one final time.
May you like
Because the document had one more line.
BIOLOGICAL FATHER: ETHAN HALE.
