CHAPTER 12 — JONATHAN’S SON

The words echoed through the vault.
“You're his son.”
I stared at Ethan.
Then at Daniel.
Then at the photograph of Victor and my mother on the wall.
Nothing made sense anymore.
“Say it again.”
Ethan didn't blink.
“Jonathan Cross is your biological father.”
I laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
“No.”
“You heard me.”
“Victor is my father.”
“He isn't.”
“My mother said he was.”
“Your mother lied.”
“Daniel said he was.”
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“Daniel didn't know.”
I turned toward the man I had spent my entire life calling Dad.
“Is that true?”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know.”
“You're telling me you raised me without knowing who my father was?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did Mom say Victor was my father?”
“Because she believed it.”
“Believed?”
Daniel shook his head.
“She was told the same lie.”
My head was spinning.
Ethan lowered his gun.
“That's why Jonathan has always been afraid of you.”
“Why?”
“Because you aren't just an heir.”
He pointed toward the wall.
“Your blood gives you access to the original trust.”
“But you said you were the heir.”
“I am.”
“Then why do they need me?”
Ethan looked at me.
“Because Jonathan divided the inheritance.”
I frowned.
“What inheritance?”
“The organization.”
He pointed to the names on the wall.
“Evelyn controlled intelligence.”
“Victor controlled security.”
“Daniel controlled operations.”
“Jonathan controlled money.”
“And you?”
Ethan smiled.
“I was supposed to control everything after Jonathan died.”
“And me?”
“You were never supposed to exist.”
I felt a chill.
“What happened?”
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“Ask him.”
I turned.
Daniel slowly sat down.
“Your biological mother wasn't Teresa.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Teresa raised you.”
“But she wasn't my mother?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
He hesitated.
“Evelyn.”
I stared at him.
“Evelyn is my mother?”
“Yes.”
Everything suddenly clicked.
The hospital record.
The Hale name.
The missing birth certificate.
The strange way Evelyn looked at me.
She hadn't been looking at me like a stranger.
She had been looking at me like a mother looking at a child she had lost.
I shook my head.
“Then Ethan…”
“He's your twin.”
My throat tightened.
“Same mother?”
“Yes.”
“Same father?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Yes.”
“Jonathan?”
He nodded.
I stepped backward.
The entire world seemed unreal.
Ethan and I had the same parents.
Jonathan was our father.
Evelyn was our mother.
Victor had been protecting us.
Teresa had raised me.
Daniel had raised Ethan's twin without knowing the truth.
And Jonathan had spent decades hunting his own son.
I looked at Ethan.
“Why did you bring Amy and Frederick here?”
“I didn't.”
“You said Evelyn works for you.”
“She does.”
“Then where are they?”
Ethan's expression changed.
“I don't know.”
For the first time, he looked genuinely concerned.
“What?”
“I ordered Evelyn to bring you here.”
“You ordered her to take my family.”
“I ordered her to bring Amy safely.”
“Then where is she?”
Ethan looked at his phone.
He dialed.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
His face hardened.
“She isn't answering.”
I stepped toward him.
“If anything happens to them…”
“You won't be the only one looking for her.”
That was the first time Ethan sounded afraid.
Then the vault door slammed shut.
All the lights turned red.
A computerized voice filled the room.
SECURITY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.
Ethan turned toward the wall.
“What did you do?”
“I didn't do anything.”
Daniel stood.
“Someone activated the vault remotely.”
Reed raised his weapon.
“Who?”
A screen appeared.
Jonathan Cross.
He was sitting behind a desk.
Calm.
Smiling.
“Hello, boys.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Where is Evelyn?”
Jonathan smiled.
“You still care about her?”
“She has Amy.”
“And Frederick.”
My fists clenched.
“Where are they?”
Jonathan looked directly at me.
“Safe.”
“Let them go.”
“I will.”
“When?”
“When you come home.”
I stared at him.
“Home?”
Jonathan leaned back.
“You don't understand, Connor.”
“Then explain.”
“You have spent your entire life believing I wanted to destroy you.”
“You've threatened my family.”
“Yes.”
“You sent men after us.”
“Yes.”
“You kidnapped my father.”
“Yes.”
“And you expect me to believe you want me home?”
Jonathan smiled.
“I never wanted to kill you.”
“Then what do you want?”
“You.”
Silence.
“You are the only person who can take control of the original trust.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“What about me?”
Jonathan's expression hardened.
“You were always the backup.”
Ethan froze.
I looked at him.
Jonathan continued.
“Your brother was the original heir.”
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“Then why did you raise me?”
“Because I needed someone who could survive.”
“And Connor?”
“He needed someone who could love.”
I felt a strange chill.
Jonathan looked directly at me.
“Teresa gave you a normal life.”
“She protected you from the organization.”
“Daniel gave you a father's love.”
“And Victor watched from the shadows.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
Jonathan laughed.
“Daniel never knew the entire plan.”
I stared at the screen.
“What happened to my real parents?”
Jonathan's smile disappeared.
“Evelyn betrayed me.”
“And you?”
“I betrayed her first.”
“So you destroyed our family.”
“No.”
He leaned toward the camera.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
The screen flickered.
A video appeared.
It showed a hospital room.
A young Evelyn was lying in bed.
Two newborn babies rested beside her.
Twins.
Me and Ethan.
Victor stood nearby.
Teresa was there too.
Daniel stood at the doorway.
Then Jonathan entered.
I watched as he approached the babies.
He picked one up.
Me.
He looked at Evelyn.
Then said something.
The audio was faint.
I increased the volume.
Jonathan's younger voice came through.
“Only one child leaves this room with me.”
Evelyn screamed.
Victor stepped forward.
Daniel blocked him.
Then the video ended.
I stared at the screen.
“Which child?”
Jonathan smiled.
“You.”
My blood froze.
“Why?”
“Because Ethan had a heart condition.”
I looked at Ethan.
He said nothing.
Jonathan continued.
“The doctors said he might not survive childhood.”
I stared at my brother.
“That was a lie.”
Ethan looked at me.
“It was.”
Jonathan nodded.
“I needed two heirs.”
“But Ethan wasn't healthy.”
“He survived.”
“Because you kept him alive.”
“No.”
Jonathan smiled.
“Because Evelyn did.”
The screen changed.
A medical file appeared.
ETHAN HALE
Then:
GENETIC CONDITION: RESOLVED
I looked at Ethan.
“You were never sick.”
“No.”
“Then why did they tell everyone you were?”
Ethan's face became cold.
“To make me disappear.”
Jonathan spoke again.
“Your mother wanted to take both children and escape.”
“She failed.”
“What happened?”
“Victor helped her.”
“And you?”
“I found them.”
My heart pounded.
“What did you do?”
Jonathan's expression became unreadable.
“I made a deal.”
“With who?”
“Teresa.”
I felt sick.
“What deal?”
“She could keep one child.”
I stared.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
“In exchange for what?”
Jonathan smiled.
“She would never reveal my identity.”
I looked at Daniel.
Then Ethan.
Then the screen.
Everything had been arranged before I could even speak.
My entire childhood had been a contract.
My mother had raised me because Jonathan allowed it.
Daniel had loved me because he believed I was his son.
Victor had watched me because he knew the truth.
Ethan had grown up in the shadows because he was the other half of the plan.
Then Jonathan said something that made the room go silent.
“But there was one problem.”
“What?”
“Your mother didn't keep her promise.”
“Teresa?”
“No.”
He looked at the screen.
“Evelyn.”
My supposed mother.
“She came back.”
“Why?”
Jonathan's expression hardened.
“To kill me.”
The screen went black.
Then a new video appeared.
Evelyn was sitting beside Amy.
Frederick was sleeping in her arms.
My blood froze.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Connor.”
I stepped closer.
“If you're watching this, Jonathan has already told you enough to make you hate me.”
She looked down at Frederick.
“But there is one truth he will never tell you.”
She lifted her eyes.
“Your son isn't the heir.”
My heart stopped.
“Ethan isn't the heir either.”
Jonathan's face suddenly appeared on another screen.
His expression changed.
Evelyn continued:
“The real heir is already inside this family.”
She looked at Frederick.
“Your son carries the final genetic marker.”
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Jonathan shouted:
“SHUT IT DOWN!”
The screens flickered.
Evelyn's final words came through.
“Connor, if you want your wife and son alive, don't trust Jonathan.”
The video cut.
Then every door in the vault unlocked simultaneously.
A siren began screaming.
Reed looked toward the exit.
“We need to move.”
I looked at Ethan.
He was staring at the black screen.
“Ethan.”
He didn't respond.
“Ethan!”
He finally looked at me.
His face had changed.
“What?”
“Where is Evelyn?”
“I don't know.”
“Then we're finding her.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I finally understand what she was doing.”
“What?”
Ethan looked at Frederick's photograph.
“She wasn't trying to kidnap your son.”
He looked at me.
“She was trying to hide him.”
“From who?”
Ethan whispered:
“From our father.”
Suddenly, every phone in the vault received the same message.
FREDERICK BRADLEY HAS BEEN LOCATED.
Then another:
TARGET STATUS: ACQUIRED.
I stared at the screen.
“Where?”
A location appeared.
Not the terminal.
Not the warehouse.
Not the Bradley building.
It was my house.
The house where this nightmare had begun.
Ethan looked at me.
“They took him home.”
I grabbed my keys.
“Then we're going home.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Connor…”
I turned.
He looked terrified.
“That's exactly what they want.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
He pointed toward the screen.
“Because the house isn't your home anymore.”
“What is it?”
Daniel whispered:
“It's the final vault.”
May you like
And somewhere inside that house, my son was waiting for us.
But so was the person who had been controlling my family for thirty years.
