CHAPTER 15 — THE LAST LIE

I couldn't breathe.

I stared at the document.

Then at Ethan.

Then at Frederick.

The words blurred in front of my eyes.

BIOLOGICAL FATHER: ETHAN HALE.

“No.”

Ethan didn't move.

Jonathan smiled.

“You finally understand.”

I looked at my brother.

“Tell me it's fake.”

Ethan's face had gone completely white.

“I can't.”

My hands began shaking.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“You knew?”

“I swear I didn't.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“You knew?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Then I looked at Daniel.

He was crying.

That was when I understood.

Nobody had expected this.

Nobody except Jonathan.

I held Frederick tighter.

“Why would you do this?”

Jonathan's smile disappeared.

“I didn't.”

“Then who?”

He looked at Evelyn.

“She did.”

Evelyn stepped backward.

“No.”

Jonathan pointed at the document.

“Evelyn manipulated the records.”

“I protected him.”

“You stole him.”

“I saved him.”

“From me?”

“From all of you.”

I looked at her.

“What did you do?”

She closed her eyes.

“When you were born, I knew Jonathan would use you.”

“So?”

“I made a decision.”

“What decision?”

“I changed the blood records.”

I stared.

“You made me believe Frederick was my son?”

“No.”

She looked at Ethan.

“I made everyone believe Connor was Frederick's father.”

Silence.

I looked at Ethan.

He finally spoke.

“Then the DNA test…”

“Was altered,” Evelyn said.

Jonathan laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He took another document from his coat.

“This one is real.”

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

My hands trembled.

The result was different.

BIOLOGICAL FATHER: CONNOR BRADLEY

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.99%

I stared.

Jonathan smiled.

“The first document was designed to break you.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I needed you angry.”

“For what?”

“To activate the final system.”

I froze.

The entire room went silent.

Jonathan pointed toward the wooden box.

“Put your hand inside.”

“No.”

“Then Amy dies.”

I looked around.

“Where is she?”

Jonathan smiled.

“Still alive.”

“Prove it.”

He lifted his phone.

A live video appeared.

Amy was tied to a chair.

Her face was bruised.

But she was conscious.

“Connor!”

I stepped forward.

“Amy!”

Jonathan lowered the phone.

“Now.”

I looked at the box.

Ethan stood beside me.

“Don't.”

Jonathan raised his weapon.

“Do it.”

I placed my hand inside.

The box clicked.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small biometric device.

It scanned my palm.

Then my eye.

Then my DNA.

The church lights flickered.

A low mechanical hum began beneath the floor.

Jonathan smiled.

“Finally.”

Evelyn suddenly rushed toward me.

Jonathan fired.

The gunshot echoed through the church.

Evelyn fell.

“Mom!”

I caught her.

Blood spread across her coat.

Ethan dropped beside us.

“Mom!”

She looked at both of us.

For the first time, she smiled.

“My boys.”

I held her hand.

“Stay with us.”

She shook her head.

“I've spent thirty years running.”

“Don't.”

“It's time to stop.”

Ethan looked at Jonathan.

“You shot her.”

Jonathan lowered his gun.

“She chose her side.”

Ethan stood.

His face was completely different now.

Cold.

Furious.

He raised his weapon.

Jonathan smiled.

“You won't shoot me.”

Ethan fired.

Jonathan moved.

The bullet struck the stone wall.

Jonathan escaped through the side door.

“STOP!”

Ethan chased him.

I stayed with Evelyn.

She was losing blood.

“Where is Amy?”

She pointed weakly toward the old bell tower.

“She's there.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Go.”

He nodded.

“I'm getting her.”

I picked up Evelyn.

“We need a hospital.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

She grabbed my wrist.

“Listen.”

I stopped.

“Jonathan isn't the final enemy.”

“Then who?”

She looked at the floor.

“The person who created the trust.”

I frowned.

“You mean Victor's father?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

She whispered:

“Teresa.”

I froze.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She didn't just raise you.”

“She designed the final transfer.”

I stared at her.

“She knew about Frederick.”

“Yes.”

“She knew about Jonathan.”

“Yes.”

“She knew everything.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she protect me?”

Evelyn smiled weakly.

“Because she loved you.”

The words broke something inside me.

My mother had made terrible choices.

She had hurt Amy.

She had lied.

But maybe every terrible thing she'd done had been wrapped around one desperate purpose.

Keeping me alive.

I heard footsteps.

Daniel returned with Amy.

I ran toward her.

“Amy!”

She collapsed into my arms.

“Connor.”

I held her.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded.

“Frederick?”

I looked down.

He was still in my arms.

Amy started crying.

I kissed her forehead.

“We're getting out.”

Then the church bell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“That's impossible.”

“What?”

“The bell hasn't worked in twenty years.”

The floor began to shake.

A hidden door opened beneath the altar.

A screen rose from the ground.

Words appeared.

FINAL TRANSFER INITIATED.

Then:

PRIMARY OWNER: CONNOR BRADLEY

SECONDARY OWNER: ETHAN HALE

FINAL BENEFICIARY: FREDERICK BRADLEY

I stared.

Jonathan had been right about one thing.

The entire system had been built around us.

Then another line appeared.

TRANSFER REQUIRES ONE FINAL SACRIFICE.

Ethan stepped forward.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel whispered:

“Someone has to give up their ownership.”

“That's all?”

“No.”

He looked at the screen.

“The system doesn't accept voluntary surrender.”

“Then what does it require?”

Daniel's voice broke.

“Death.”

I stared at the words.

ONE OWNER MUST DIE.

Ethan looked at me.

I looked at him.

Two brothers.

Separated at birth.

Reunited by a conspiracy.

And now forced into the final choice.

Ethan slowly lowered his gun.

“I'll do it.”

“No.”

“You have Amy.”

“You have a life.”

“I've never had a family.”

“You have one now.”

He smiled faintly.

“That's exactly why I have to do it.”

I grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

He looked at me.

“You spent your entire life thinking you were alone.”

“So did I.”

“Now you aren't.”

He stepped closer.

“Let me give you something I never had.”

“What?”

“A chance to keep your family.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

The system beeped.

00:30

Thirty seconds.

Ethan stepped toward the biometric chamber.

I grabbed him.

“No!”

He looked at me.

“Brother…”

That word stopped me.

Nobody had ever called me that.

Not like he did.

He smiled.

“Take care of them.”

Then he stepped inside.

The door closed.

00:20

I screamed.

“ETHAN!”

He placed his hand against the glass.

I pressed mine against the other side.

For the first time, our hands touched.

Brother to brother.

00:10

Ethan smiled.

Then the lights went white.

00:05

I heard a gunshot outside.

00:04

Amy screamed.

00:03

Daniel shouted:

“CONNOR, GET DOWN!”

00:02

The glass chamber cracked.

00:01

Everything went black.

Then silence.

I opened my eyes.

The chamber was empty.

Ethan was gone.

The screen displayed:

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Then:

FINAL BENEFICIARY ACTIVATED.

I looked down at Frederick.

His eyes were open.

A tiny blue light appeared on the bracelet around his wrist.

My phone vibrated.

One message.

From an unknown number.

YOU THINK ETHAN DIED.

Another message arrived.

HE DIDN'T.

Then:

THE TRANSFER DIDN'T KILL HIM.

I stared at the screen.

A final message appeared.

IT CHANGED HIM.

I looked toward the broken chamber.

Somewhere outside, police sirens were approaching.

Amy held my arm.

Daniel stood frozen.

Evelyn was still breathing.

And Ethan was gone.

But beneath the church floor, something had awakened.

The final archive opened.

Every secret.

Every name.

Every payment.

Every murder.

Every betrayal.

And at the very bottom of the screen appeared one final file.

PROJECT ECHO — SUBJECT ETHAN HALE

Status:

ACTIVE.

I stared at the word.

Then another line appeared.

LOCATION: NASHVILLE.

My blood ran cold.

Ethan wasn't dead.

He was somewhere in the city.

And whatever the transfer had done to him...

he was no longer the same man who had entered that chamber.

I looked at Amy.

Then Frederick.

Then the dark tunnel beneath the church.

I knew this nightmare wasn't over.

It had only changed hands.

May you like

And this time...

the person hunting us was my own brother.
