CHAPTER 10 — THE BROTHER IN THE DARK

The container doors slammed shut.

“Amy!”

I ran forward.

A gunman stepped out of the shadows.

“Stop.”

I froze.

Through the narrow gap between two containers, I could see Amy holding Frederick.

Evelyn stood beside her.

The knife was still in Amy's hand.

She looked terrified.

“Connor!”

“I'm here!”

Evelyn raised one finger.

“Ten minutes.”

I looked at my phone.

09:42

“Where is my brother?”

She smiled.

“Find him.”

“How?”

“You have his blood.”

“That doesn't tell me anything.”

“It tells you everything.”

She turned toward the darkness.

“Your father knows where to look.”

I turned to Daniel.

“Dad.”

He looked devastated.

“Connor, you need to leave.”

“No.”

“You don't understand what she is doing.”

“Then explain it.”

“I can't.”

“You've been saying that for thirty years.”

He closed his eyes.

“You have a brother.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Evelyn laughed.

“You always were a terrible liar, Daniel.”

My father looked at her.

“You don't know where he is either.”

“I don't need to.”

She pointed toward the old terminal building.

“He'll come to you.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because he has spent his entire life searching for you.”

The words hit me harder than I expected.

My brother had been searching for me.

For thirty years.

And I had never even known he existed.

I looked at my phone.

08:51

“Where do I start?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Your father's office.”

“What office?”

“The one he never told you about.”

Daniel's face changed.

“Evelyn, don't.”

She ignored him.

“Third floor.”

“Of what?”

“The Bradley building.”

My stomach tightened.

The Bradley building was downtown.

An old commercial property my father had supposedly sold before he died.

I looked at Daniel.

“You still own it?”

He nodded.

“Go.”

“Why?”

“Because that's where the truth begins.”

I turned toward the terminal building.

“Dad, you're coming.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You need to go alone.”

“I'm done going alone.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“You want me to find my brother?”

She nodded.

“Then let Amy go.”

She smiled.

“When you find him.”

I looked at the clock.

07:58

I ran.

Daniel followed.

Detective Reed emerged from behind a vehicle.

“What happened?”

“My wife is being held.”

“Where?”

“Inside the terminal.”

“How many?”

“At least six.”

Reed reached for his radio.

“We're going in.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Why?”

“They'll hurt her.”

“What do you suggest?”

“I find my brother.”

Reed stared at me.

I didn't have time to explain.

We jumped into his vehicle.

The Bradley building was twelve minutes away.

We had less than eight.

The drive felt endless.

I called Amy.

No answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then my phone buzzed.

A video.

I opened it.

Amy was sitting on the floor.

Frederick was asleep against her chest.

Evelyn stood behind her.

She spoke directly to the camera.

“Six minutes.”

The video ended.

I clenched my jaw.

Detective Reed looked at me.

“She's playing with you.”

“I know.”

“Don't let her control your decisions.”

“She already has my wife.”

He didn't answer.

We reached the Bradley building.

The doors were locked.

Reed kicked them open.

We rushed inside.

The lobby was abandoned.

Dust covered the floor.

My father's company logo was still mounted behind the reception desk.

BRADLEY HOLDINGS.

I looked up.

Third floor.

We ran upstairs.

The hallway was dark.

At the end was a wooden door.

My father's name was engraved on it.

DANIEL BRADLEY — PRESIDENT

I opened it.

The office was untouched.

Like someone had frozen time twelve years ago.

His desk.

His chair.

His books.

His photographs.

Everything.

I walked toward the desk.

My father stopped me.

“Don't open that drawer.”

I turned.

“Why?”

“Because you don't know what's inside.”

“That's exactly why I'm opening it.”

I pulled the drawer.

Locked.

I remembered the key.

The black metal key my mother gave me.

I inserted it.

Click.

The drawer opened.

Inside was a small tape recorder.

A photograph.

And a sealed envelope.

The envelope had my name.

I opened it.

My father's handwriting.

Connor,

If you're reading this, then the first security layer has failed.

I continued.

Your brother is alive.

My hands shook.

His name is Ethan.

I looked at Daniel.

“Ethan.”

He nodded.

He was born seven minutes before you.

My heart stopped.

Seven minutes.

My brother was my twin.

I read further.

Ethan was given to a family outside Tennessee after the operation failed.

He was told his parents died.

He was never told about you.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why?”

“Because if Jonathan found both of you, he could use you together.”

“How?”

“The trust required two bloodline signatures.”

I stared.

“Mine and Ethan's?”

“Yes.”

The phone buzzed.

04:31

Evelyn sent another message.

THE CLOCK IS RUNNING.

Then:

YOU HAVE THE NAME. FIND HIM.

I grabbed the tape recorder.

“What's this?”

Daniel looked terrified.

“That is the last recording I made before I disappeared.”

I pressed play.

Static.

Then my father's voice.

“If you're hearing this, I'm probably dead.”

I looked at Daniel.

He closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“I have failed to protect both of my sons.”

My heart pounded.

“Ethan will grow up believing he was abandoned.”

“Connor will grow up believing Daniel Bradley was his biological father.”

“Neither is true.”

I looked at my father.

The recording continued.

“Victor Hale is Connor's biological father.”

“Evelyn is Ethan's biological mother.”

I stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

“What?”

He didn't answer.

The recording continued.

“The twins were separated because Evelyn wanted one child and Victor wanted the other.”

I felt sick.

“My brother was raised by Evelyn?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

The recording said:

“Ethan was taken by Jonathan.”

I froze.

“Jonathan?”

Daniel whispered:

“He wanted the twins.”

“Why?”

“Because their blood was valuable.”

The recording continued.

“The trust was created by Victor's father.”

“It contains more than money.”

“It contains ownership rights over several international companies.”

“Only the twins together can unlock the final authority.”

My heart raced.

“So that's why they want us.”

Daniel nodded.

Then the recording said something that made my blood run cold.

“Connor, if Ethan ever contacts you, do not trust him.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Why?”

The recording answered.

“Because Ethan may not remember who he really is.”

The tape ended.

Silence.

I stared at my father.

“What does that mean?”

He looked at me.

“Ethan was raised by Jonathan's people.”

“So?”

“He was trained.”

“For what?”

Daniel hesitated.

“To find you.”

The room seemed to spin.

My brother had spent his entire life searching for me.

But maybe he hadn't been searching to reunite.

Maybe he had been searching because someone had programmed him to.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Connor?”

The voice was the same one from earlier.

My brother.

“Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I'm outside.”

I looked toward the window.

A man stood across the street.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

He was staring directly at me.

My heart stopped.

“Ethan?”

He raised one hand.

Then he pointed toward the building.

“Come downstairs.”

I looked at Daniel.

He grabbed my arm.

“Don't.”

“Why?”

“Because that's not Ethan.”

I looked back toward the window.

The man was gone.

My phone rang again.

This time, the voice wasn't Ethan.

It was Evelyn.

“Did you find your brother?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“What do you want?”

Her voice became cold.

“I want you to understand something.”

“What?”

“Ethan isn't the danger.”

I froze.

“Then who is?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your mother.”

My blood ran cold.

“Teresa?”

“She never told you why she chose you.”

“What are you talking about?”

Evelyn whispered:

“Because Ethan wasn't the son she wanted.”

I looked at Daniel.

He looked horrified.

Evelyn continued:

“She chose you because you were the one with the genetic condition.”

I couldn't breathe.

“What condition?”

“Your blood can activate the final account.”

I stared at my hands.

“And Ethan?”

“He can destroy it.”

I froze.

“So why do they need both of us?”

“Because only together can you open it.”

Then Evelyn's voice dropped.

“But only one of you can survive the final transfer.”

The call ended.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does she mean?”

He didn't answer.

I grabbed his shirt.

“WHAT DOES SHE MEAN?”

He finally looked into my eyes.

And whispered:

“Your brother was never supposed to survive the transfer.”

My phone buzzed.

A final message appeared.

COME BACK TO THE TERMINAL.

Then:

BRING YOUR FATHER.

And beneath it:

BRING ETHAN.

I stared at the message.

Three men.

One secret.

One final account.

And somewhere inside that dark terminal, Amy and Frederick were still waiting.

But now I knew the truth.

This was never about my house.

It was never about the money.

It was never even about me.

May you like

It had always been about two brothers who were separated at birth...

because someone needed one of us to die.
