CHAPTER 13 — THE HOUSE WAS NEVER OURS

We drove back to my house without speaking.
Nobody needed to say what we were all thinking.
If Daniel was right, the house wasn't simply a house.
It was a vault.
A vault my father had built.
A vault my mother had controlled.
A vault Jonathan had been searching for.
And now my wife and son were inside it.
I looked at the clock.
11:47 p.m.
We had been running for hours.
My entire life had turned upside down in a single day.
Yet somehow, one thing remained painfully simple.
I wanted my family back.
Detective Reed drove behind us with two patrol cars.
Ethan sat in the passenger seat beside me.
Daniel was in the back.
I glanced at Ethan.
“You really don't know where Evelyn took Frederick?”
“No.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
I frowned.
He looked at me.
“I don't expect you to trust me.”
“Good.”
“I wouldn't trust me either.”
That answer surprised me.
“You're different from the way I imagined.”
“You've known me for less than an hour.”
“And yet I feel like I've known you forever.”
Ethan looked out the window.
“That's because we're twins.”
I almost smiled.
Almost.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Amy.
DON'T COME INSIDE.
I slammed on the brakes.
“What?”
Ethan looked at me.
“What happened?”
I showed him.
His expression changed.
“She sent that?”
“Yes.”
“Then she's still conscious.”
“What does that mean?”
“She has access to a phone.”
I called her.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then another message appeared.
THE BASEMENT.
I stared at it.
Ethan leaned closer.
“What?”
“Basement.”
Daniel suddenly spoke from the back.
“No.”
I turned.
“What?”
“Don't go into the basement.”
“Why?”
“Because that's where your father built it.”
“The vault?”
Daniel nodded.
“What is inside?”
He hesitated.
“The original archive.”
I stared at him.
“The one from the company?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“The original records.”
“What records?”
“Births.”
“Deaths.”
“Payments.”
“Everything.”
I looked at him.
“Why would my house have that?”
“Because your father knew Jonathan would eventually search the company.”
“So he moved everything here.”
“Yes.”
I stared at the road.
“And my mother knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then the birthday party…”
Daniel's expression darkened.
“She wasn't trying to take your house.”
“She was trying to find the vault.”
I understood.
My mother had invited twenty relatives.
Filled the house with people.
Forced Amy into the kitchen.
She wasn't just humiliating her.
She was searching.
For something.
But what?
I turned toward Ethan.
“What would she need the vault for?”
“To destroy it.”
“Why?”
“To erase the evidence.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Ethan looked at him.
“What?”
“Teresa didn't want to destroy the archive.”
Daniel's voice became quiet.
“She wanted to give it to you.”
I stared.
“Why?”
“Because she knew you were finally ready.”
The house appeared ahead.
Dark.
Silent.
Every window black.
I pulled into the driveway.
Nothing moved.
No cars.
No lights.
No signs of anyone.
Too quiet.
We stepped out.
Detective Reed raised his hand.
“Stay behind us.”
I nodded.
We approached the front door.
It was unlocked.
I pushed it open.
The house smelled exactly as it had earlier.
Seafood.
Alcohol.
Cleaning chemicals.
But now everything was dark.
I stepped inside.
“Amy?”
No answer.
“Mom?”
Nothing.
Ethan followed.
Then Daniel.
We reached the kitchen.
The plastic stool was still there.
The dirty dishes were gone.
The floor had been cleaned.
Almost perfectly.
I looked at Ethan.
“Someone cleaned this.”
He nodded.
“Recently.”
I walked toward the basement door.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Wait.”
“What?”
“Listen.”
We froze.
A faint sound came from below.
Crying.
A baby.
Frederick.
My heart exploded.
“Frederick!”
I opened the basement door.
The lights turned on automatically.
Stairs descended into darkness.
I ran.
“Connor!”
Ethan followed.
We reached the bottom.
The basement was empty.
Except for one crib.
Inside was a baby blanket.
No Frederick.
I stopped.
The crying had stopped.
Then a speaker crackled.
Jonathan's voice.
“Welcome home.”
I looked around.
“Where is my son?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“Exactly where he needs to be.”
I clenched my fists.
“You've taken enough.”
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“I've only taken what belongs to me.”
“You don't own my son.”
“I don't want to own him.”
“Then what?”
“I want to activate him.”
My stomach turned.
“Activate?”
“He is the final key.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Leave him out of this.”
Jonathan laughed.
“You're still protecting your brother.”
“He's my family.”
“He is the reason you were created.”
Silence.
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Jonathan continued.
“You were never meant to be an heir.”
Ethan's face went pale.
“You were meant to be a failsafe.”
“A what?”
“A replacement.”
Jonathan explained.
“When Connor was born, we discovered his genetic marker.”
“We knew he could access the trust.”
“But we needed a second child in case he died.”
“So they created me?”
“No.”
Jonathan laughed.
“Your mother gave birth to you.”
“Ethan was born naturally.”
“But we altered his records.”
“Why?”
“To make him disappear.”
I looked at Ethan.
“You were the backup.”
He stared at the floor.
Then whispered:
“All my life…”
Jonathan interrupted.
“All your life, you thought you were searching for your family.”
“You weren't.”
“You were searching for your purpose.”
I stepped forward.
“What did you do with Frederick?”
Jonathan didn't answer.
Instead, a screen lowered from the ceiling.
A video appeared.
Amy was tied to a chair.
Frederick was beside her.
She was crying.
My blood froze.
“Amy!”
She looked at the camera.
“Connor!”
Jonathan spoke.
“Your son is unharmed.”
“Let them go.”
“Open the vault.”
I looked around.
“Where is it?”
Jonathan smiled.
“Behind the wall.”
I turned.
There was a concrete wall at the far end of the basement.
Nothing unusual.
Except for one detail.
A tiny blue light.
I walked toward it.
Ethan followed.
Daniel stopped.
“Connor.”
“What?”
“Don't.”
“Why?”
“Because once you open it, you can't close it.”
I turned.
“I don't care.”
Daniel looked at me.
“You will.”
I pressed my hand against the wall.
Nothing.
Then I remembered the message.
The house was the final vault.
I looked at my phone.
The screen displayed:
PRIMARY OWNER DETECTED.
Then:
SECONDARY OWNER DETECTED.
Ethan stepped beside me.
The wall suddenly lit up.
Two handprints appeared.
One for me.
One for him.
I stared.
“We need both.”
Ethan placed his hand against the wall.
I placed mine beside his.
The concrete wall split down the middle.
A hidden door opened.
Cold air rushed out.
Inside was a massive underground chamber.
Shelves covered every wall.
Files.
Hard drives.
Boxes.
Photographs.
Millions of dollars in cash.
And at the center stood a metal table.
On it was a single envelope.
My name was written on it.
But beneath my name was another.
ETHAN.
We walked inside.
Daniel stayed at the doorway.
“Don't open that.”
I turned.
“Why?”
“Because that is what your father died trying to protect.”
I stared at the envelope.
“My father is alive.”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Then what I mean is…”
He stopped.
“What?”
He looked at the envelope.
“That is what he believed would kill you.”
I picked it up.
Ethan stood beside me.
We opened it together.
Inside was one photograph.
Our mother.
Evelyn.
Holding both of us as newborns.
On the back was a handwritten message.
THE TWINS ARE NOT THE FINAL HEIRS.
I turned the photograph over.
Below the first sentence was another.
THEIR CHILDREN ARE.
My heart stopped.
Ethan looked at me.
“Connor…”
Then the basement doors slammed shut.
Jonathan's voice came through the speakers.
“Now you understand why I needed Frederick.”
The lights turned red.
A countdown appeared on the wall.
10:00
09:59
09:58
Ethan looked at me.
“What happens at zero?”
Daniel answered from behind us.
“The vault opens.”
I frowned.
“I thought it was already open.”
He shook his head.
“This is only the first chamber.”
“Then what's behind the second?”
Daniel's face went pale.
“The people who built the entire system.”
The countdown continued.
09:31
Then a voice came from the far end of the chamber.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
Evelyn.
“You finally found it.”
I turned.
She stepped from the shadows.
She wasn't holding a weapon.
She wasn't smiling.
She looked directly at me.
Then at Ethan.
Then at the photograph.
“I'm sorry.”
I stared at her.
“For what?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“For lying about why I took Frederick.”
I stepped forward.
“Where is my son?”
She looked at me.
“He's not in danger.”
“Then where is he?”
Evelyn took a breath.
“Your mother has him.”
I froze.
“Teresa?”
She nodded.
“She took Frederick before Jonathan could.”
I looked toward Daniel.
He looked shocked.
Evelyn continued:
“Teresa never betrayed you.”
“She betrayed Jonathan.”
“Because she finally learned what Frederick really is.”
I stared at her.
“What is he?”
Evelyn looked at the photograph of the twins.
Then whispered:
“Your son is the only person alive who can destroy the entire organization.”
The countdown reached:
05:00
Evelyn looked at me.
“And Jonathan knows it.”
Then the lights went out.
A gunshot echoed from somewhere above us.
And Teresa's voice screamed through the darkness:
“CONNOR, RUN!”
I grabbed Ethan.
“What happened?”
Then we heard another voice.
Jonathan.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“Too late.”
The basement door opened.
A shadow stepped inside.
And when the emergency light came on, I saw the person standing there.
It was my mother.
Teresa.
May you like
Holding Frederick.
And pointing a gun directly at me.
