CHAPTER 11 — THE BROTHER WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

I read the message three times.

BRING YOUR FATHER.

BRING ETHAN.

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the screen as if it contained a death sentence.

“Dad.”

He didn't answer.

“Why does Evelyn want all of us at the terminal?”

“Because she's finished hiding.”

“And Ethan?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know where he is.”

I looked toward the window.

“He was standing across the street.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“That wasn't Ethan.”

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because Ethan would never stand where they could see him.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“He was trained to survive.”

My stomach tightened.

“By Jonathan?”

Daniel nodded.

“Then we have to find him before Jonathan does.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Connor, there's something you need to understand.”

“What?”

“Ethan doesn't trust anyone.”

“Why?”

“Because everyone who raised him taught him that people are dangerous.”

I thought about my own childhood.

My mother.

My father's memory.

The carefully constructed lies.

Maybe Ethan had grown up inside an even bigger lie.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Connor?”

“Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“Come to the terminal.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn wants me there.”

“She has Amy.”

“I know.”

“She has my son.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Then Ethan asked:

“Do you trust your father?”

I looked at Daniel.

“No.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because he's lying to you.”

Daniel immediately looked at me.

“Connor, hang up.”

I ignored him.

“What is he lying about?”

Ethan's voice became quiet.

“He knows who ordered your father's death.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

“He won't tell you.”

“Do you know?”

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

“You're not ready.”

“Try me.”

A long pause.

Then Ethan said:

“Your mother.”

I froze.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What?”

“Teresa ordered the hit.”

I stared at my father.

“Is that true?”

Daniel didn't answer.

“Dad?”

Still nothing.

Ethan continued.

“She wasn't trying to protect you.”

“She was trying to inherit everything.”

My hands began shaking.

“Why would she kill my father?”

“Because he was going to expose her.”

I looked at Daniel.

He finally whispered:

“That's not the whole story.”

I almost laughed.

“Of course it isn't.”

Ethan said:

“Ask him about the night of the fire.”

“What fire?”

“The fire that killed my family.”

My blood ran cold.

“Your family?”

“The people who raised me.”

“Who were they?”

Silence.

Then Ethan said:

“They were the first people Jonathan killed.”

The call ended.

I stood motionless.

Daniel looked at me.

“You shouldn't have spoken to him.”

“Why?”

“Because he knows too much.”

“Then tell me everything.”

He shook his head.

“I can't.”

“You can.”

“No.”

I grabbed his arm.

“My wife and son are being held because of your secrets.”

He looked at me.

“You think I don't know that?”

“Then talk.”

Daniel took a long breath.

“Teresa didn't order your father's death.”

I stared.

“Ethan lied.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To manipulate you.”

“Why would he do that?”

“Because he wants you to distrust everyone.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because he needs you alone.”

The words settled heavily.

I looked at my phone.

“Then what does he want?”

Daniel's voice dropped.

“The trust.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone wants the trust.”

“Ethan wants it for a different reason.”

“What reason?”

“To destroy it.”

I stared at him.

“He wants to destroy the money?”

“No.”

“The evidence?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Daniel looked at me.

“The people connected to it.”

I understood.

Ethan didn't want wealth.

He wanted revenge.

Before I could respond, Detective Reed entered the office.

“We found something.”

He placed a tablet on the desk.

“Traffic cameras.”

A video showed a black SUV leaving the terminal.

Another showed a second vehicle.

Then a third.

Reed paused the footage.

A man stepped out of one vehicle.

I recognized him.

Mason.

My cousin.

“What is he doing there?”

Reed looked at me.

“That's what we need to find out.”

I watched the footage again.

Mason wasn't alone.

He was talking to a woman.

I zoomed in.

My stomach dropped.

Teresa.

My mother.

She was standing outside the terminal.

Three days ago.

The same day Jonathan claimed she sold my location.

I looked at Daniel.

“She was there.”

“Yes.”

“You said she wasn't working with Jonathan.”

“She wasn't.”

“Then who was she meeting?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Reed paused the footage again.

“There.”

Behind Teresa stood a third person.

A young man.

Dark hair.

Same height as me.

Same build.

I stared.

“That's Ethan.”

Daniel nodded.

“He came to Teresa.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

The footage continued.

Ethan handed Teresa something.

A small envelope.

Then Teresa handed him something else.

A key.

I recognized it.

The black key my mother had given me.

My stomach dropped.

“Mom had two keys.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.”

“One for me.”

“One for Ethan.”

I felt sick.

“Then why did she give me mine?”

“Because she wanted you to open the safe.”

“And Ethan's?”

“She gave it to him.”

“What does his key open?”

Daniel's expression changed.

“The second vault.”

I stared.

“There's another vault?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

He hesitated.

“The Bradley building.”

We rushed downstairs.

The second vault was hidden beneath the foundation.

Reed called in a tactical team.

We found the entrance beneath an old storage room.

The black key fit perfectly.

The steel door opened.

Inside was a room filled with files.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

And one wall covered with names.

Hundreds of names.

At the center was one name written in red.

TERESA BRADLEY.

Under it:

AUTHORIZED ASSET.

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked devastated.

“She was one of them.”

“Jonathan's group?”

“Yes.”

“You said she wasn't.”

“She left.”

“When?”

“Twelve years ago.”

“Why?”

Daniel pointed toward the wall.

There was another name.

EVELYN HALE.

Beside it:

PRIMARY ARCHITECT.

Then:

JONATHAN CROSS.

FINANCIAL DIRECTOR.

And finally:

DANIEL BRADLEY.

FIELD OPERATIONS.

I stared at my father.

“You were all working together.”

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Mom too.”

“Yes.”

“Victor?”

Daniel nodded.

“Victor was the security chief.”

I felt sick.

“My entire family was part of this.”

“Not you.”

“Until now.”

Daniel looked away.

I walked toward the wall.

Then I saw another name.

ETHAN HALE.

Under it:

SUCCESSOR.

I froze.

“Ethan isn't just my brother.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“He's the heir.”

“Yes.”

“To what?”

Daniel whispered:

“The entire organization.”

I looked at the files.

Then at my father.

Then at the name on the wall.

My brother wasn't merely trying to destroy the trust.

He had been raised to inherit the people behind it.

Before I could process that, the lights went out.

A door slammed somewhere behind us.

Reed shouted,

“Everyone stay together!”

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Connor.”

I knew it instantly.

Ethan.

“Don't move.”

I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Coming toward us.

Then the lights returned.

Ethan stood in the doorway.

He looked exactly like me.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same expression.

But there was something colder in his face.

He held a gun.

He looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“I finally found you.”

I stepped forward.

“You took Amy.”

“No.”

“Evelyn did.”

“She works for me.”

My blood froze.

“What?”

Ethan smiled.

“Now you understand.”

He looked at the wall.

“Everything your father told you is true.”

Then he raised the gun.

“Except one thing.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

He pointed directly at Daniel.

“Your father isn't your father.”

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Ethan smiled.

“Victor Hale isn't your biological father.”

I looked at Daniel.

Then Ethan.

“Then who is?”

Ethan lowered his weapon.

“Jonathan Cross.”

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

Ethan continued:

“And that's why Jonathan has been hunting you.”

He stepped closer.

“Because you're not his enemy.”

May you like

He looked at me.

“You're his son.”
