Chapter 4 - My Father's Last LetterThe envelope smelled like old paper and dust.

I held it carefully.
My father's handwriting covered the front.
For Clare. Not Julian.
My stomach tightened.
“Open it,” Khloe said.
I did.
Inside was a single letter.
My father's first line made my hands shake.
If you're reading this, then Julian has already failed you.
I stopped.
Khloe read over my shoulder.
My father had written the letter twelve years earlier.
Long before my wedding.
Long before Elena.
Long before Lucas.
He had anticipated something.
The letter explained that the Vance fortune was more fragile than anyone understood.
The $1.5 billion empire was not held by Julian personally.
It was controlled through layers of trusts, holding companies, voting agreements and family foundations.
My father had helped design the original structure.
But there was one problem.
The Vance family wanted a trustee they could control.
My father refused.
So they chose me.
Not because I was weak.
Because they assumed marriage would make me obedient.
I kept reading.
The family will eventually try to replace you.
My heart pounded.
When they do, they will use a child.
Khloe whispered, “A child?”
I continued.
They will present a male heir. They will pressure you to surrender control. They will tell you the bloodline must continue.
My breathing slowed.
My father had predicted this.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
But the boy they present may not be the real threat.
I read it twice.
“May not be the real threat.”
Khloe looked at me.
“What does that mean?”
The next paragraph answered.
My father had discovered that a secret faction inside the Vance organization had been diverting money through shell companies.
They needed control of the trust to hide the theft.
The heir story was merely the weapon.
The real objective was access.
Then I saw the signature.
My father.
And beneath it, another signature.
Julian's grandfather.
The founder of the Vance empire.
A handwritten amendment.
The trustee shall prioritize the protection of lawful descendants, regardless of gender.
Elena was protected.
There was no ambiguity.
My daughter was not merely included.
She was specifically protected.
“Julian knew,” I whispered.
Khloe's expression hardened.
“He knew about the clause?”
“He had to.”
I remembered our wedding.
Julian had once joked that I knew the trust better than he did.
At the time, I thought he was flirting.
Now I wondered if he had been testing me.
The door opened.
An assistant hurried in.
“Mrs. Vance, there’s a problem.”
“What?”
“The family board called an emergency meeting.”
“Who called it?”
She hesitated.
“Julian.”
“On what grounds?”
“He says you're mentally unstable after childbirth.”
I felt something cold slide through me.
Khloe cursed.
“That's fast.”
I stood.
“Then we'll be faster.”
We entered the boardroom forty minutes later.
Julian sat at the center.
Mia sat behind him.
She wore a cream dress and carried herself like she belonged there.
A family physician spoke first.
“Mrs. Vance has recently undergone childbirth. Her judgment may be impaired.”
I laughed.
The room went silent.
“You're diagnosing me because I gave birth?”
Julian interrupted.
“This isn't personal.”
“Everything you do is personal.”
He looked at the board.
“The company needs stability.”
I placed my father's letter on the table.
“And you need control.”
Julian's face changed.
He knew the letter.
I watched him go pale.
“You found it.”
I smiled.
“So you knew.”
Nobody moved.
Then Mia stood.
“Julian, maybe we should tell her.”
He turned sharply.
“No.”
Mia looked confused.
I studied her.
She looked frightened.
Not triumphant.
Frightened.
“Tell me what?” I asked.
She swallowed.
Then she looked directly at Julian.
“The truth.”
Julian grabbed her wrist.
“Mia.”
She pulled away.
“I’m done protecting you.”
The board erupted.
I stared at her.
She was crying now.
“I didn't know what he was doing,” Mia said.
“Doing what?”
She looked at me.
“The money.”
“What money?”
Mia whispered:
“Lucas’s medical expenses were never the problem.”
My pulse quickened.
“What was?”
She looked at Julian.
“He wasn't the reason Julian chose you.”
The room went silent.
Mia took a breath.
“Your daughter is.”
I stared at her.
“What do you mean?”
Mia wiped her tears.
“Because the moment Elena was born…”
She pointed toward me.
“Julian knew he would lose everything.”
May you like
Then she said the sentence that made the entire room freeze.
“Unless he could prove you were unfit to be her trustee.”
