Chapter 1 - The Door He ClosedThe thirty-seventh contraction felt like my body was splitting in two.

I gripped the edge of the hospital bed until my fingernails turned white.
“Breathe, Mrs. Vance. Just breathe.”
I almost laughed.
Breathe?
How was I supposed to breathe when the man I had loved for seven years had just walked into my delivery room and told me that the daughter I was about to give birth to meant nothing to him?
Julian stood near the monitor in his charcoal suit.
Not beside me.
Not holding my hand.
Not even pretending to be concerned.
Mia stood behind him, one hand resting on her swollen stomach.
My former intern.
The woman who used to ask me for help writing business proposals.
The woman who had once called me “Mrs. Vance” with nervous respect.
Now she looked at me like she had already inherited my life.
Julian glanced at the monitor.
“Mia already gave me a son,” he said.
I stared at him.
“What?”
“He’s fifteen months old.”
Another contraction hit.
I cried out.
The nurse stepped toward me, but Julian did not move.
“The Vance family needs a male heir,” he continued. “So this child won’t be included in the family trust.”
My heart stopped for a second.
“You’re telling me this now?”
“I’m offering you compensation.”
He said the word as if I were an employee negotiating severance.
“Mia and I have already discussed the future.”
Mia lowered her eyes.
Perfectly rehearsed.
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out an envelope.
“I’ll make sure you’re financially comfortable.”
I looked at the envelope.
Then at him.
Then at the woman who had betrayed me.
The strangest thing happened.
I stopped crying.
The fear disappeared.
The humiliation burned itself out.
And underneath it, something colder appeared.
The nurse suddenly shouted.
“I see the head!”
Everything blurred.
A few minutes later, a tiny cry filled the room.
“It’s a girl!”
My daughter.
They placed her on my chest.
Her face was red and furious.
Her tiny fingers curled around mine.
I stared at her.
Julian looked at her for three seconds.
Three.
Then he checked his watch.
“I’m taking Mia home.”
My throat tightened.
He turned toward the door.
“You should think about the money,” he said.
The door slammed behind him.
I looked at my daughter.
“Your father just made the biggest mistake of his life.”
She opened her eyes.
Dark eyes.
Vance eyes.
My eyes.
I reached for my phone.
There was only one person I wanted.
Khloe Mercer.
New York's most feared family attorney.
She answered on the second ring.
“Clare? Please tell me that scream I heard through the phone was the baby, not you.”
“It was the baby.”
Khloe laughed softly.
“Boy or girl?”
“Girl.”
“Congratulations.”
I looked toward the closed door.
“Khloe, Julian has a secret son.”
Silence.
“He brought Mia into my delivery room.”
Another silence.
“And he just told me our daughter is being excluded from the Vance family trust.”
Her voice changed.
“What exactly did he say?”
I repeated everything.
When I finished, Khloe spoke slowly.
“Clare.”
“Yes?”
“How much of the trust does he control?”
I almost smiled.
“Nothing.”
Another silence.
Then Khloe whispered, “Oh.”
I looked at the Manhattan skyline through the window.
“You remember who drafted the Vance Family Preservation Trust?”
“You.”
“Who wrote the trustee provisions?”
“You did.”
“Who is listed as sole trustee?”
There was no need to answer.
Khloe already knew.
“You.”
I held my daughter closer.
“Three things. Tonight.”
“I’m listening.”
“First, freeze every discretionary distribution.”
“Done.”
“Second, notify the trust bank and every beneficiary that no amendment is valid without my signature.”
“Good.”
“And third…”
I looked at the envelope Julian had left on the table.
“Send him a copy of the trustee agreement.”
Khloe laughed.
A dangerous little laugh.
“What do you want the cover note to say?”
I smiled.
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“Let him read the agreement himself.”
I lowered my eyes to my daughter.
“He thinks he closed the door on me.”
Khloe's voice softened.
“Clare, what are you planning?”
I watched my daughter's tiny hand tighten around my finger.
“I’m going to decide when it opens.”
Twenty minutes later, my phone vibrated.
Khloe had sent me a screenshot.
A transfer request.
Five hundred million dollars.
Submitted that afternoon.
Requested beneficiary:
Mia Vance.
I stared at the screen.
Julian had already tried to move the money.
And he had done it before my daughter was even born.
Then Khloe sent another message.
There’s something worse.
My pulse quickened.
I opened it.
The account used to request the transfer wasn't Julian’s.
I frowned.
Then another message arrived.
It was signed with your name.
I stopped breathing.
May you like
Someone had forged my signature.
And whoever did it already knew exactly how the trust worked.
