Chapter 3 - LucasThe first thing I did after leaving the hospital was not go home.

I went to the Vance family office.

I entered through the private elevator at 8:16 a.m., carrying my newborn daughter in my arms.

Every employee froze when they saw me.

They knew.

News traveled faster inside billion-dollar companies than outside them.

Everyone had heard something.

Nobody knew the truth.

That was about to change.

I walked into the executive conference room.

The CFO stood immediately.

“Mrs. Vance…”

“Sit.”

He sat.

The general counsel entered thirty seconds later.

Then the chief operating officer.

Then three board members.

I placed my daughter’s carrier on the table.

Every face turned toward her.

“This is Elena.”

Nobody spoke.

“She is Julian Vance’s daughter.”

I paused.

“And she remains a protected beneficiary under the Vance Family Preservation Trust.”

The general counsel cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Vance, there has been confusion regarding—”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“There has been fraud.”

Khloe placed a folder on the table.

“We have identified unauthorized trust expenditures totaling more than thirty-eight million dollars.”

The CFO went pale.

“For what?”

“Childcare. Medical care. Property maintenance. Security.”

“For Lucas,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

The general counsel swallowed.

“Is there proof the child is Julian’s?”

“That's what we're about to discover.”

At noon, Khloe received the preliminary DNA report.

She stared at it.

I knew immediately.

“What?”

She looked up.

“Julian is the biological father.”

I closed my eyes.

For one second, relief and disappointment collided.

So the boy was his.

That meant Mia had not fabricated everything.

But something still felt wrong.

“Then the son is real.”

“Yes.”

“Why do I still feel like we're missing something?”

“Because we are.”

Khloe slid another file toward me.

Lucas's birth certificate.

Mother:

Mia Bennett.

Father:

Julian Vance.

Birth hospital:

Manhattan Women's Center.

I frowned.

“What’s strange?”

“Julian's passport records show he was in London on that date.”

I stared at her.

“Maybe he flew back.”

“No.”

She tapped the record.

“His passport has no entry into the United States for eleven days.”

I looked at Lucas's birth date.

Julian couldn't have been there.

“Then how did he sign the birth certificate?”

Khloe leaned back.

“Exactly.”

We requested the hospital file.

The signature was electronic.

A hospital representative had entered Julian as the father based on documentation provided by Mia.

“What documentation?”

Khloe smiled coldly.

“A copy of Julian’s driver's license.”

I looked at her.

“Was it real?”

“The number was real.”

“And?”

“The image was altered.”

My skin prickled.

Someone had manufactured proof of paternity.

But DNA said Julian was Lucas's father.

That meant the baby was real.

The paternity was real.

But the paperwork around him was manipulated.

Someone had wanted Lucas documented as a Vance heir under suspicious circumstances.

Why?

That evening, Julian arrived at the family office with two attorneys.

He slammed the door behind him.

“You had no right to investigate my son.”

I looked at him.

“You had no right to use trust assets without authorization.”

“You’re obsessed with money.”

I laughed.

“You married the wrong woman if you wanted a wife who couldn't read a balance sheet.”

One of his lawyers stepped forward.

“Mrs. Vance, my client intends to challenge your authority as trustee.”

Khloe smiled.

“On what grounds?”

“Conflict of interest.”

I looked at Julian.

He nodded.

“You’re the mother of a beneficiary.”

“And?”

“You cannot act impartially.”

I leaned forward.

“Then let's make this simple.”

I slid a document across the table.

It was the trustee succession clause.

Julian read it.

His face emptied.

I watched the exact moment he realized what it meant.

“If the trustee is married to a beneficiary's parent,” I said, “the trustee remains independent unless removed for proven misconduct.”

His lawyer read the next paragraph.

His mouth tightened.

Khloe continued for me.

“And removal requires unanimous approval from the independent oversight committee.”

Julian stared at me.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

I looked at my daughter’s photo on my phone.

“I planned to protect my family.”

He suddenly smiled.

That frightened me more than anger.

“You still don't understand, Clare.”

“Understand what?”

He leaned close.

“You're fighting for an empire that doesn't belong to you.”

He walked away.

Then he stopped at the door.

“Ask your father.”

I froze.

My father had been dead for nine years.

Julian knew that.

He knew exactly what he was doing.

I looked at Khloe.

“What does my father have to do with this?”

She was already reaching for her phone.

Ten minutes later, she found something.

A sealed document.

Stored inside a Vance archive.

With my father's name on it.

And a note written across the envelope:

OPEN ONLY IF CLARE BECOMES TRUSTEE.

I stared at the handwriting.

I recognized it instantly.

May you like

My father had left me a secret.

And apparently, Julian knew it existed.
