Chapter 15 - The Heir's First DayThree months later, the Vance empire no longer looked the same.

Vivienne was facing federal charges.

Ethan had agreed to cooperate.

Mia disappeared from the public eye and moved into a secure apartment with Lucas.

Julian resigned from the CEO position.

He and I began divorce proceedings.

Quietly.

Without photographers.

Without headlines.

Without another woman in the delivery room.

The family office changed too.

Every account was audited.

Every shell company dismantled.

Every executive connected to the old system removed.

And Elena?

She slept through most of it.

She had no idea she had inherited enough voting control to terrify a room full of billionaires.

One afternoon, I stood by the nursery window overlooking Manhattan.

Khloe entered.

“You've been staring at her for ten minutes.”

“She looks peaceful.”

“She is.”

“I keep thinking about how close we came.”

Khloe nodded.

Then she handed me a folder.

“What now?”

“We found something.”

I opened it.

Inside was a family registry.

The old Vance bloodline records.

My finger moved down the page.

Then stopped.

A name appeared.

A woman.

Born seventeen years before me.

Mother: my father.

My heart stopped.

“What is this?”

Khloe sat beside me.

“We don't know yet.”

“That says my father was her father.”

“Yes.”

“She would have been my half-sister.”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Khloe shook her head.

“That's the problem.”

I looked at the record.

The woman had disappeared from every public registry.

No death certificate.

No marriage.

No address.

Nothing.

Then another document appeared.

A photograph.

A teenage girl standing beside my father.

The face was unmistakably familiar.

She had my eyes.

My father's smile.

I stared at her.

“Who is she?”

Khloe whispered:

“Her name is Audrey.”

I looked toward Elena.

“Did my father know?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he tell me?”

“We think Vivienne knew.”

My heart tightened.

Another envelope sat beneath the photograph.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My father's handwriting.

Clare, if you're reading this, then the Vance family has already fallen.

I read on.

But the empire was never the true secret.

My hands trembled.

Audrey was the first protected descendant.

I looked at Khloe.

“Then why did he hide her?”

“He doesn't say.”

I continued.

I hid her because someone was hunting the bloodline.

My stomach twisted.

Then the final sentence:

And if Audrey is still alive, she has spent her entire life believing you abandoned her.

I closed my eyes.

All my life, I had believed I was the last person my father left behind.

I wasn't.

There had been another daughter.

Another secret.

Another heir.

And somewhere in the world, a woman who shared my blood might believe I stole the life that should have been hers.

The nursery door opened.

Julian stood there.

He looked exhausted.

“Can I see Elena?”

I nodded.

He walked toward the crib.

He didn't touch her.

He simply watched her sleep.

“She looks like you.”

“She does.”

He smiled faintly.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“They found Audrey.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

He lowered the phone.

“New York.”

“Who found her?”

Julian shook his head.

“That's not the frightening part.”

“What is?”

He handed me the phone.

A photograph appeared.

A woman standing outside the Vance headquarters.

Dark hair.

Green eyes.

My eyes.

She was holding a folded piece of paper.

Written across it were four words:

I know what you did.

I looked at Julian.

“What did my father do?”

He didn't answer.

Then Elena began to cry.

I lifted her from the crib.

Outside the window, Manhattan glittered beneath the afternoon sun.

A billion-dollar empire was finally under my daughter's protection.

But suddenly, none of that mattered.

Because the war I thought I had won had only been the first chapter.

My father had hidden a daughter.

That daughter had returned.

And somewhere behind her stood the person who had spent decades trying to destroy the Vance bloodline.

I looked at Elena.

Then at the photograph again.

And for the first time, I understood what my father had meant.

The trust had never been created to protect an empire.

It had been created to protect us from whoever inherited the right to control it.

I pulled Elena closer.

My phone buzzed.

One new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

You won the trust, Clare.

A second message appeared.

But you still haven't found the real heir.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then the final message arrived.

And she's standing in your house.
