Chapter 2 - The First LockBy midnight, the Vance Family Preservation Trust was frozen.

By twelve fifteen, four bank officers had received emergency notices.
By twelve thirty, the family office had been informed that every discretionary transfer now required my approval.
And at 12:42 a.m., Julian finally called.
I watched his name flash across my screen.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
I let it ring.
Khloe sat beside my hospital bed with her laptop open.
“You’re not answering?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Another call.
Then a text.
Pick up.
I ignored it.
Another text.
Clare, this is serious.
I looked at Khloe.
“Should I tell him?”
“Tell him what?”
“That serious isn’t a word he gets to use anymore.”
The door opened.
A nurse entered carrying paperwork.
“Mrs. Vance, your husband is downstairs.”
I sighed.
Of course he was.
“Tell him visiting hours are over.”
“He says he’s the baby’s father.”
I looked down at my daughter.
Then back at the nurse.
“He can wait.”
Five minutes later, the hospital administrator called.
Then security.
Then the chief of staff.
Apparently Julian Vance did not enjoy being told no.
But neither did I.
The next morning, the internet exploded.
A business article appeared at 7:03 a.m.
VANCE FAMILY HEIR WELCOMED
The article claimed Julian had become the proud father of a healthy baby boy.
I stared at the headline.
Healthy baby boy.
Fifteen months old.
A son nobody knew existed.
The article included photos of Julian holding a toddler.
The image was dated fifteen months earlier.
The caption read:
Julian Vance privately welcomes first child.
Khloe leaned over my shoulder.
“Interesting.”
“He staged this.”
“Maybe.”
“What do you mean, maybe?”
Khloe pointed at the photo.
“Look at the background.”
I zoomed in.
A framed painting hung behind Julian.
I knew that painting.
It was from the Vance estate in Connecticut.
Except the photo had supposedly been taken in a private New York residence.
Khloe smiled.
“Your husband has been lying about where he lives too.”
Before I could answer, the hospital doors opened.
Julian walked in.
No Mia.
No flowers.
No apology.
He stopped beside my bed.
“We need to talk.”
I kept my eyes on my daughter.
“You should have talked before you brought another woman into my delivery room.”
His jaw tightened.
“I didn’t come here to fight.”
“Then leave.”
He looked at the baby.
“Our daughter.”
I laughed once.
“Yesterday she wasn’t part of your family.”
“She’s still my daughter.”
“Blood doesn't make you a father, Julian.”
His expression hardened.
“What did you do to the trust?”
There it was.
Not the baby.
Not me.
The money.
I turned to him.
“I protected it.”
“You had no right.”
“I’m the trustee.”
“You’re my wife.”
“Exactly.”
He stepped closer.
“You cannot freeze a trust containing my family’s assets.”
“I didn’t freeze the assets.”
I smiled.
“I froze your access.”
His face changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
It lasted barely a second.
Then the arrogance returned.
“You think you can control my family?”
“No.”
I looked at my daughter.
“I can control the structure your family built.”
Julian leaned closer.
“You will regret this.”
“Maybe.”
He turned toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Oh, Clare.”
I looked up.
“Mia’s son has a name.”
I said nothing.
“Lucas.”
My heart skipped.
Julian smiled.
“You should get used to hearing it.”
After he left, I looked at Khloe.
“Find everything about Lucas.”
“Already doing it.”
“And Julian's secret residence.”
“Already found it.”
“Where?”
Khloe turned her laptop toward me.
“Greenwich.”
I stared.
The Vance estate was in Greenwich.
Not New York.
Not Connecticut's countryside.
Greenwich.
The house belonged to Julian’s late grandfather.
Nobody had lived there for years.
At least, nobody publicly.
Khloe clicked another file.
“This gets interesting.”
A property management invoice appeared.
Monthly security.
Private pediatric services.
Private nanny.
For fifteen months.
Paid through the Vance family office.
My daughter began crying.
I picked her up.
Then Khloe whispered:
“Clare, this wasn't just a secret affair.”
“What?”
“Someone has been funding that child with trust money since the day he was born.”
I looked at the invoice.
At the bottom was an authorization signature.
Mine.
Again.
Forged.
I slowly lowered the page.
“Julian wants me to believe I abandoned my own daughter.”
Khloe looked at me.
“And someone has been building evidence to make it look like you did.”
The room went silent.
My daughter stopped crying.
I looked at her tiny face.
Someone had planned this long before I gave birth.
And suddenly, Julian's betrayal felt much bigger than an affair.
Someone wanted me removed.
Not just from the marriage.
From the trust.
From the Vance family.
Maybe even from my daughter's future.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
You should never have taken control of the trust, Clare.
May you like
Then another.
Because now we have to take you out of it.
